Cognitive functioning differentially predicts different dimensions of older drivers' on-road safety.

The extent to which deficits in specific cognitive domains contribute to older drivers' safety risk in complex real-world driving tasks is not well understood. We selected 148 drivers older than 70 years of age both with and without neurodegenerative diseases (Alzheimer disease-AD and Parkinson disease-PD) from an existing driving database of older adults. Participant assessments included on-road driving safety and cognitive functioning in visuospatial construction, speed of processing, memory, and executive functioning. The standardized on-road drive test was designed to examine multiple face

Normative clinical language data and task specific effects.

Language production in clinical populations varies by both neurological condition and discourse task. This study analyzes connected speech from 1394 individuals with left or right hemisphere damage, Traumatic Brain Injury, Mild Cognitive Impairment, dementia, or no neurological diagnosis. Participants completed narrative, procedural, and picture-based tasks. Using Open Brain AI to extract linguistic features across phonology, morphology, syntax, semantics, lexicon, and readability, we applied mixed-effects models to examine effects of diagnosis, task, and their interaction. Results showed that

Domain-independent neural underpinning of task-switching: an fMRI investigation.

The ability to shift between different tasks according to internal or external demands, which is at the core of our behavioral flexibility, has been generally linked to the functionality of left fronto-parietal regions. Traditionally, the left and right hemispheres have also been associated with verbal and spatial processing, respectively. We therefore investigated with functional MRI whether the processes engaged during task-switching interact in the brain with the domain of the tasks to be switched, that is, verbal or spatial. Importantly, physical stimuli were exactly the same and participa

Egocenter location in children with strabismus: in the median plane and unchanged by surgery.

PURPOSE: Previous studies have shown that there are spatial localization shifts after horizontal strabismus surgery when a patient performs an open-loop pointing task. After monocular enucleation, an adult will also show a shift in the pointing response. Other studies have shown that in children who underwent enucleation, the egocenter location shifts toward the remaining eye. Is the pointing shift after surgery in children with strabismus the result of a shift in egocenter location? METHODS: Using a modified Roelofs' method for measuring the egocenter, eight children were tested before and a

Cognitive enhancing effects of rTMS administered to the prefrontal cortex in patients with depression: A systematic review and meta-analysis of individual task effects.

BACKGROUND: Repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) is an approved therapeutic treatment of major depressive disorder and has increasing clinical use throughout the world. However, it remains unclear whether an rTMS course for depression may also produce cognitive enhancement. In a recent meta-analysis of sham-controlled randomized controlled studies (RCTs) conducted in patients with neuropsychiatric conditions, no evidence was found for generalized cognitive enhancing effects across cognitive domains with active compared to sham rTMS. Notwithstanding, there remains the possibility

Neurocognitive deficits associated with shoplifting in young adults.

OBJECTIVES: Shoplifting is a relatively common behavior in young adults, but the demographic and neuropsychological correlates of shoplifting remain poorly characterized in this context. METHOD: Non-treatment-seeking young adults (18-29 years) were recruited from the general community on the basis of having no Axis I disorders, no history of illicit substance use, and no history of conduct disorder or antisocial personality disorder. Participants were grouped according to presence or absence of shoplifting (at least 1 time over the past 12 months). Measures relating to impulsivity along with

Late-term moderate prenatal alcohol exposure impairs tactile, but not spatial, discrimination in a T-maze continuous performance task in juvenile rats.

Existing maze apparatuses used in rodents often exclusively assess spatial discriminability as a means to evaluate learning impairments. Spatial learning in such paradigms is reportedly spared by moderate prenatal alcohol exposure in rats, suggesting that spatial reinforcement alone is insufficient to delineate executive dysfunction, which consistently manifests in humans prenatally-exposed to alcohol. To address this, we designed a single-session continuous performance task in the T-maze apparatus that requires rats to discriminate within and between simultaneously-presented spatial (left or

Attentional processing in hyperthyroid children before and after treatment.

To determine whether specific components of attentional processing may be differentially disrupted during thyrotoxicosis, nine children with hyperthyroidism were assessed for intelligence and attention before and after one year of therapy. The attention test allowed for measurement of sustain, disengage, and shift subcomponents of attentional processing. Comparison with pediatric controls revealed lower nonverbal intelligence during thyrotoxicosis, which improved to normal following euthyroidism. On the attention task, an effect was observed during thyrotoxicosis only on the shift and disengag

Differential cross-modal functional plasticity in deaf individuals: A meta-analysis of neuroimaging studies.

A manifest condition of brain plasticity is cross-modal plasticity in deafness, wherein auditory-deprived cortices are recruited by intact sensory modalities. While cross-modal plasticity is well documented, the underlying principles remain debated, centering on the functional change and functional preservation principles. To quantitatively evaluate these principles, we conducted the largest coordinate-based meta-analysis to date, synthesizing 47 studies (801 deaf and 880 hearing participants) spanning linguistic and non-linguistic tasks. Deaf individuals exhibited consistent cross-modal activ

Affective decision-making on the Iowa gambling task in children and adolescents with fetal alcohol spectrum disorders.

Individuals with fetal alcohol spectrum disorders (FASD) have difficulties with cognitive-based executive function (EF) tasks. The goal of the present study was to determine if children with FASD have impairments on the Iowa Gambling Task (IGT), which measures affective EF (i.e., decision-making and risk-taking). Individuals with FASD (n = 31) and healthy controls (n = 31), aged 8-17 completed the IGT. Children with FASD were significantly impaired on the IGT compared to controls. Over the course of the task, control scores improved, whereas children with FASD exhibited an overall decrease in

Task demands and binocular eye movements.

Humans make rapid movements of their eyes several times a second that enable them to examine objects located at different positions in space with both of their eyes. Much of our understanding of these binocular movements comes from studies using experienced observers performing repetitive, unnatural tasks. But what eye movements are made when naïve observers perform tasks demanding specific binocular visual information? We examined the binocular eye movements produced by observers performing two tasks differing in the visual information needed for their completion. Our motivation for doing thi

Cognitive Exertion Reduces Real-World Effortful Choice Without Corresponding Shifts in Self-Reported Motivation.

Physical inactivity represents a significant public health concern, as many individuals fail to translate intentions to be active into actual behavior. Acute cognitive exertion may worsen this intention-behavior gap by increasing the subjective cost of effortful action. The present study examined whether acute cognitive exertion and fatigue-like vigilance worsening were associated with movement-related motivation and immediate effort-related choice. Forty participants completed a within-subjects, counterbalanced crossover design in which they either completed a 30-minute Stroop session or a pa

Behavioral and neural dynamics of cognitive control in the context of rumination.

Rumination is a characteristic feature of several clinical disorders (e.g., major depressive disorder, insomnia disorder). Emerging evidence suggests that a reduced flexibility in the balance between proactive and reactive control might be related to trait rumination. This study aimed to investigate the proactive-reactive control balance in the context of trait rumination. In the current study, we investigated behavioral performance and event-related potentials (ERPs) while participants were performing an AX- Continuous Performance Task, to evaluate whether a shift towards more reactive contro

Does One Year of Schooling Improve Children's Cognitive Control and Alter Associated Brain Activation?

The "5-to-7-year shift" refers to the remarkable improvements observed in children's cognitive abilities during this age range, particularly in their ability to exert control over their attention and behavior-that is, their executive functioning. As this shift coincides with school entry, the extent to which it is driven by brain maturation or by exposure to formal schooling is unclear. In this longitudinal study, we followed 5-year-olds born close to the official cutoff date for entry into first grade and compared those who subsequently entered first grade that year with those who remained in

Differentiating phonological delay from phonological disorder: Executive function performance in preschoolers.

BACKGROUND: The conversational speech of most children can be understood by people outside the family by the time they reach 4 years. However, for some children, speech sound disorders (SSDs) persist into their early school years, and beyond, despite adequate hearing, oromotor function, and language learning opportunities. One explanation for children's SSDs are domain-general cognitive-linguistic deficits that impair the child's ability to correctly derive rules governing how speech sounds legally combine to form words in a specific language. AIMS: To explore whether there are differences in

Dichotic listening performance with cochlear-implant simulations of ear asymmetry is consistent with difficulty ignoring clearer speech.

There are an increasing number of bilateral and single-sided-deafness cochlear-implant (CI) users who hope to achieve improved spatial-hearing abilities through access to sound in both ears. It is, however, unclear how speech is processed when inputs are functionally asymmetrical, which may have an impact on spatial-hearing abilities. Therefore, functionally asymmetrical hearing was controlled and parametrically manipulated using a channel vocoder as a CI simulation. In Experiment 1, normal-hearing (NH) listeners performed a dichotic listening task (i.e., selective attention to one ear, ignori

Mental calculation increases physiological postural tremor, but does not influence physiological goal-directed kinetic tremor.

PURPOSE: During a cognitive effort, an increase in cortical electrical activity, functional alterations in the anterior cingulate cortex, and modifications in cortical inputs to the active motor units have been reported. In light of this, an increase in tremor could be anticipated as result of a mental task. In the present work, we tested this hypothesis. METHODS: In 25 individuals, tremor was measured with a three-axial accelerometer during 300 s of postural and goal-directed tasks performed simultaneously to mental calculation, or during control (same tasks without mental calculation). Reorganization of Motor Execution Networks During Sub-Acute Phase After Stroke.

Numerous studies focused on brain reorganization after stroke from aspects of task-related brain activity and resting-state brain networks. However, studies focusing on the longitudinal reorganization of task-state brain networks were scarce. In this study, functional magnetic resonance imaging data were collected from twelve stroke patients during blocked finger-tapping task at four post-stroke time points (less than 10 days, around 2 weeks, 1 month and 3 months), respectively. The dynamic changes and prognostic value of the network parameters (i.e., topological parameters, functional connect

Task-dependent and distinct roles of the temporoparietal junction and inferior frontal cortex in the control of imitation.

The control of neurological networks supporting social cognition is crucially important for social interaction. In particular, the control of imitation is directly linked to interaction quality, with impairments associated with disorders characterized by social difficulties. Previous work suggests inferior frontal cortex (IFC) and the temporoparietal junction (TPJ) are involved in controlling imitation, but the functional roles of these areas remain unclear. Here, transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) was used to enhance cortical excitability at IFC and the TPJ prior to the completion

Association between two distinct executive tasks in schizophrenia: a functional transcranial Doppler sonography study.

BACKGROUND: Schizophrenia is a severe mental disorder involving impairments in executive functioning, which are important cognitive processes that can be assessed by planning tasks such as the Stockings of Cambridge (SOC), and tasks of rule learning/abstraction such as the Wisconsin Card Sorting Test (WCST). We undertook this study to investigate the association between performance during separate phases of SOC and WCST, including mean cerebral blood flow velocity (MFV) measurements in chronic schizophrenia. METHODS: Functional transcranial Doppler sonography (fTCD) was used to assess bilater
