BACKGROUND: Awareness of accidental tattoos after iron injections with paravenous leakage is low. No larger patient cohorts have been analyzed. The lesions are a burden to the patients. The only known treatment is laser therapy.

OBJECTIVES: The data regarding the health of professional tattooists is inexistent. Tattooists are usually heavily tattooed and exposed daily to body fluids and skin-to-skin contacts with customers, tattoo inks, solvents, allergens, irritants, and work for hours often in inadequate positions using vibrating tattoo machines. OBJECTIVES: To find the prevalence of complaints in people having tattoos, with emphasis on chronic complaints, photosensitivity and photodynamic events.
METHODS: Individuals sunbathing from June to September 2011 at the beaches of Denmark were invited to participate as they are prone to report tattoos and sun habits reliably. Sun-related and non-sun-related problems in tattoos were determined along with participants' use of sunscreen. Skin type was categorized, as were motifs and colours associated with problems.

We describe a case of a 10 year old boy who developed an contact dermatitis to black henna tattoo. Sixteen days later he was brought to the emergency department because of an presumed superinfection by S. aureus. The infection was successfully treated with dicloxacillin and the allergic reaction with bethametasone ointment and tablets. The use of pure henna is legal but has been proven to be harmful in animal experiments. Para-phenylendiamine (PPD) has been mixed with henna to achieve a darker colour and to decrease the treatment time and is well known to cause allergic reactions.

Two female patients presented nodular erythematous lesions overlying a permanent tattooed eyebrow and lip, respectively. Histologic examination showed in both cases epithelioid granulomas in close relation with scattered pigment. Complementary examinations and follow-up disclosed a sarcoidosis. The lesions resolved after treatment with topical steroids and also oral allopurinol in one of the cases. Allopurinol may be an effective treatment for granulomatous reactions to foreign body particles.
