Cyanide detoxification in mammals occurs, in part, by sulfur transfer by rhodanese to form the less toxic thiocyanate. Thiosulfate and nitrite are often used in combination for the treatment of cyanide intoxication. This report shows that nitrite can inhibit the rate of sulfur transfer by rhodanese in vitro. Nitrate, chloride, sulfate, and acetate were also examined as inhibitors. Inhibition by nitrite appeared to be more complex than for the other anions tested. Calciphylaxis is a rare, life-threatening disorder primarily affecting patients with end-stage renal disease (ESRD) on dialysis. Early lesions can mimic infection, leading to delays in diagnosis and wound-directed care. Calciphylaxis is a rare, highly mortal disease, typically diagnosed in patients with end-stage renal disease. This disorder usually presents as necrotic ulcers in acral or adipose areas. BACKGROUND: Oculofaciocardiodental (OFCD) syndrome is an X-linked dominant condition that is typically lethal in males.
OBSERVATIONS: A 13-month-old male patient with OFCD syndrome presented with hepatoblastoma. He received chemotherapy per standard of care and had a surgical resection with few complications. Smoke inhalation injury is common in victims of domestic fires, among whom children are the most vulnerable.
