Abstract Microbial diseases are a serious hindrance to successful shrimp aquaculture. The Pacific white shrimp Litopenaeus vannamei is an exotic species recently introduced in India to supplement the failing aquaculture of the Asian tiger shrimp Penaeus monodon due to viral diseases. However, after a brief initial success, the aquaculture of L. vannamei is also experiencing serious problems due to microbial diseases. In this study, we conducted a microbiological investigation into the problem of persistent mortalities in selected L. vannamei farms on the southeastern coast of India. The infect

Introduction. Pantothenate-kinase-associated neurodegeneration (PKAN) is a rare genetic disease and a form of neurodegeneration with brain iron accumulation (NBIA). It most commonly begins in the first two decades of life but should be considered in the differential diagnosis of patients at any age with an atypical progressive extrapyramidal disorder and cognitive impairment. Few late-adult cases have been reported. Case Report. A 50-year-old woman presented with a history of progressive dysarthria and dysphagia secondary to orolingual dystonia. Initial work-up was normal. There was no family

A case of Red-bellied Black snake envenomation resulting in intravascular haemolytic anaemia, rhabdomyolysis and anuric renal failure is described in the dog. A 12-year-old female desexed Golden Retriever was presented with a 15 hour history of profuse salivation, progressive lethargy, obtundence, inappetence and collapse. Significant findings on clinical examination were pallor, icterus, tachypnoea and dyspnoea with increased respiratory sounds and crackles in all lung fields. Generalised abdominal and muscular pain was apparent and dark red-brown urine was present around the perineal region.

We describe a 24-year-old Japanese woman with pantothenate kinase-associated neurodegeneration (PKAN) whose only early symptom was postural tremor in the right hand at around 18 years of age, leading to a diagnosis of essential tremor at age 21. Although she was treated with arotinolol hydrochloride and clonazepam, she gradually progressed to extrapyramidal and pyramidal signs several years later. T2-weighted magnetic resonance images (MRI) showed bilaterally marked hypointensity with a central region of hyperintensity in the globus pallidus, or the so-called "eye-of-the-tiger" sign. Six years

Immunocytochemical and histochemical studies in the tiger salamander and bullfrog demonstrated the presence of luteinizing hormone-releasing hormone-like immunoreactive (LHRH-ir) material and acetylcholinesterase (AChE) in the terminal nerve (TN). Immunoreactive perikarya and processes were found within the olfactory, vomeronasal and trigeminal nerves and in the nasal epithelium. Central TN projections consisted of fibers terminating in the olfactory bulb and bundles that projected to another group of LHRH-ir perikarya in the preoptic region. Up to 4 weeks following hypophysectomy, the labelin

PURPOSE: Paragonimus westermani is the most common lung fluke infecting humans in Asia. This study aimed to molecularly characterize adult P. westermani from the south India (Kerala) using ITS-2, partial 28 S rDNA and partial cox1 gene sequences.
METHODS: Adult flukes were recovered from the lungs of a tiger (Panthera tigris) (n = 10), a jungle cat (Felis chaus) (n = 6) and a domesticated dog (Canis familiaris) (n = 4). ITS-2, partial 28 SrDNA and partial cox1 gene sequences were amplified by polymerase chain reaction and a concatenated phylogenetic tree was constructed with these three marke

The Asian tiger mosquito (Aedes albopictus) is a rapidly expanding invasive species and a global vector of arboviruses. Its transmission depends on the female's blood meal-driven reproductive cycle. Although mosquito PIWI-interacting RNAs (piRNAs) research has predominantly focused on antiviral immunity, their roles in reproduction remain poorly understood. Here we profiled sex-biased piRNA expression in Ae. albopictus and identified a female-enriched piRNA, AalpiRNA-18529. This piRNA accumulates in pre-vitellogenic ovaries and is rapidly downregulated after a blood meal. Gain-of-function expe

Several metazoans live in extreme environments, but relatively little is known about the adaptations that these extremophiles have evolved to tolerate their conditions. The wetsalts tiger beetle, Cicindelidia hemorrhagica (LeConte) (Coleoptera: Cicindelidae), is found in the western USA, including the active geothermal springs in Yellowstone National Park (YNP). Here, we characterize behavioral, ecophysiological, and morphological traits of adult C. hemorrhagica living on hot springs in YNP compared to adults living in a non-hot spring environment in Idaho. Individuals in YNP behaviorally warm

For animals that synthesise their chemical compounds de novo, resources, particularly proteins, can influence investment in chemical defences and nitrogen-based wing colouration such as melanin. Competing for the same resources often leads to trade-offs in resource allocation. We manipulated protein availability in the larval diet of the wood tiger moth, Arctia plantaginis, to test how early life resource availability influences relevant life history traits, melanin production and chemical defences. We expected higher dietary protein to result in more effective chemical defences in adult moths

Pyruvate Dehydrogenase (PDH) E2 deficiency due to Dihydrolipoamide acetyltransferase (DLAT) mutations is a very rare condition with only nine reported cases to date. We describe a 15-year-old girl with mild intellectual disability, paroxysmal dystonia and bilateral basal ganglia signal abnormalities on brain magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Additionally, neurophysiological, imaging, metabolic and exome sequencing studies were performed. Routine metabolite testing, and GLUT1 and PRRT2 mutation analysis were negative. A repeat brain MRI revealed 'Eye-of-the-tiger-sign'. Exome sequencing identif

Gene mutations independent of BCR::ABL1 have been identified in newly diagnosed patients with chronic myeloid leukemia (CML) in chronic phase, whereby mutations in epigenetic modifier genes were most common. These findings prompted the systematic analysis of prevalence, dynamics, and prognostic significance of such mutations, in a clinically well-characterized patient population of 222 CML patients from the TIGER study (CML-V) by targeted next-generation sequencing covering 54 myeloid leukemia-associated genes. In total, 53/222 CML patients (24%) carried 60 mutations at diagnosis with ASXL1 be

The Asian tiger mosquito, Aedes albopictus (Skuse) (Diptera: Culicidae), is an invasive species and a vector of numerous human pathogens, including chikungunya, dengue, yellow fever, and Zika viruses. This mosquito had been reported from 36 geographic locations in Mexico by 2005, increasing to 101 locations by 2010 and 501 locations (spanning 16 states) by 2016. Here we modeled the occupied niche for Ae. albopictus in Mexico to characterize the environmental conditions related to its presence, and to generate updated environmental suitability maps. The predictors with the greatest contribution

Climate change has already impacted the transmission of a wide range of vector-borne diseases in Europe, and it will continue to do so in the coming decades. Climate change has been implicated in the observed shift of ticks to elevated altitudes and latitudes, notably including the Ixodes ricinus tick species that is a vector for Lyme borreliosis and tick-borne encephalitis. Climate change is also thought to have been a factor in the expansion of other important disease vectors in Europe: Aedes albopictus (the Asian tiger mosquito), which transmits diseases such as Zika, dengue and chikungunya

Release from rods is triggered by the opening of L-type Ca2+ channels that lie beneath synaptic ribbons. After exocytosis, vesicles are retrieved by compensatory endocytosis. Previous work showed that endocytosis is dynamin-dependent in rods but dynamin-independent in cones. We hypothesized that fast endocytosis in rods may also differ from cones in its dependence upon the amount of Ca2+ influx and/or endocytic load. We measured exocytosis and endocytosis from membrane capacitance (C m) changes evoked by depolarizing steps in voltage clamped rods from tiger salamander retinal slices. Similar t

Bioassays in a wind tunnel showed that a combination of four stimuli releases intense host-seeking and blood-feeding behavioral responses from females of the Asian tiger mosquito, Aedes albopictus, and the yellow fever mosquito, Aedes aegypti. The stimuli are carbon dioxide, water vapor, warmth, and adenosine triphosphate (ATP). Mosquitoes responded to this combination with a repertoire of blood-feeding behaviors that included upwind flight, landing, probing, and engorgement. Absence of carbon dioxide, water vapor, or ATP from the combination of stimuli or exposure to temperatures 12° C below

AIMS: The genetic diversity of Vibrio cholerae isolated from black tiger shrimp (Penaeus monodon) aquaculture farms was determined using three PCR typing methods based on enterobacterial repetitive intergenic consensus (ERIC) sequences, ribosomal gene spacer (RS) sequence and repetitive extragenic palindromic (REP) sequences.
METHODS AND RESULTS: Non-O1 and non-O139 V. cholerae isolates were obtained from shrimp pond water, pond sediment, shrimp head and shrimp muscle. RS-PCR yielded fewer bands than REP-PCR and ERIC-PCR. Higher similarity was observed in RS-PCR (75-100%) than in REP-PCR (60-

Chrysosporium pannorum (Link) Hughes is a soil keratinophilic fungus present in organic residues, on human skin surface and in the general environment of human beings. Clear evidence for the pathogenicity of this fungus for human beings was lacking. In 1999, a case of fungal infection in a chow-chow dog and its owner was published, where Chrysosporium pannorum (Link) Hughes was determined as the only possible infection trigger. The State Hygiene Institute in Bratislava repeatedly confirmed the cultivation results. Chrysosporium pannorum (Link) Hughes was detected in the material provided by a

We examined hair from 15 patients with trichothiodystrophy (TTD), a rare inherited disorder with brittle, cystine-deficient hair. They had a wide variety of phenotypes, from brittle hair only to severe intellectual impairment and developmental delay. Polarizing light microscopic examination showed alternating light and dark (tiger tail) bands under polarizing microscopy. Confocal microscopy captured structural features of breaks in intact TTD hairs. The autofluorescent appearance was regular and smooth in normal donors and markedly irregular in sections of TTD hairs possibly reflecting abnorma

A method for evoking neurotransmitter release without light stimulation has been developed and applied to a retinal slice preparation of the tiger salamander (Ambystoma Tigrum). This method utilizes a micropipette containing hyperosmotic levels of sucrose in Ringer, positioned within the inner plexiform layer (IPL) under visual control. Intermittent pressure (between 0.1 and 2 bars) applied to the pipette evoked release of neurotransmitters which were evaluated with whole-cell recording (WCR) technique applied to cells in the ganglion cell layer. Pharmacological studies were used to characteri
