Revisiting the "enigma" of musicians with dyslexia: Auditory sequencing and speech abilities.

Previous research has suggested a link between musical training and auditory processing skills. Musicians have shown enhanced perception of auditory features critical to both music and speech, suggesting that this link extends beyond basic auditory processing. It remains unclear to what extent musicians who also have dyslexia show these specialized abilities, considering often-observed persistent deficits that coincide with reading impairments. The present study evaluated auditory sequencing and speech discrimination in 52 adults comprised of musicians with dyslexia, nonmusicians with dyslexia

Temporal predictions based on a gradual change in tempo.

Previous studies investigating sensitivity to step changes in tempo and prediction of tone onset time have generally utilized isochronous sequences. This study investigates subjects' ability to detect deviations from a gradual change in the tempo of a tone sequence (experiment 1) and their judgment of the perceptually optimal timing of this tone (experiment 2). In experiment 1, inter-onset-intervals within pairs of eight-tone sequences followed a geometric progression to create a gradual tempo change. In one sequence, the final tone was presented either earlier or later than specified by the p

A high density ERP comparison of mental rotation and mental size transformation.

To compare mental rotation and mental size transformation, 128-channel EEG was recorded while subjects performed both tasks using random two-dimensional shapes as stimuli. Behavioural results showed significant linear effects of both size transformation and mental rotation on reaction times. Rotation ERPs showed experimental effects at two latencies: a bilateral component distributed over posterior parietal electrodes at a latency of approximately 232-300ms and a second component at approximately 424-492ms distributed over right anterior parietal electrodes. The latency and spatial distributio

The effects of stimulus complexity and sensory modality on reaction time in normal and retarded readers.

Intra- and crossmodal performance of normal and retarded readers was compared in a reaction-time task. Both reading groups showed slower crossmodal than intramodal shifting. This effect occurred equally for both reading groups. Differences between the two groups occurred, however, when a complex visual stimulus was present. The complex stimulus resulted in the retarded readers showing slower reaction times to other stimuli in that setting. This effect occurred for stimuli both within and across modalities. The results suggested that the demands of stimulus complexity within the visual modality

Perception of global gestalt by temporal integration in simultanagnosia.

Patients with bilateral parieto-occipital brain damage may show intact processing of individual objects, while their perception of multiple objects is disturbed at the same time. The deficit is termed 'simultanagnosia' and has been discussed in the context of restricted visual working memory and impaired visuo-spatial attention. Recent observations indicated that the recognition of global shapes can be modulated by the spatial distance between individual objects in patients with simultanagnosia and thus is not an all-or-nothing phenomenon depending on spatial continuity. However, grouping mech

Parameterized estimation of long-range correlation and variance components in human serial interval production.

Repetitive movements lead to isochronous serial interval production which exhibit inherent variability. The Wing-Kristofferson model offers a decomposition of the interresponse intervals in tapping tasks based on a cognitive component and on a motor component. We suggest a new theoretical and fully parametric approach to this model in which the cognitive component is modeled as a long-memory process and the motor component is treated as a white noise process, mutually independent. Under these assumptions, we obtained the autocorrelation function and the spectral density function. Furthermore,

Spatial cueing in time-space synesthetes: An event-related brain potential study.

Some people report that they consistently and involuntarily associate time events, such as months of the year, with specific spatial locations; a condition referred to as time-space synesthesia. The present study investigated the manner in which such synesthetic time-space associations affect visuo-spatial attention via an endogenous cuing paradigm. Reaction times and ERPs were recorded as 12 time-space synesthetes and 12 control participants did a peripheral target detection task, cued by three different types of centrally presented cues: arrows pointing left or right, direction words "left"

A detailed examination of pitch discrimination deficits associated with auditory verbal hallucinations in schizophrenia.

Individuals with schizophrenia spectrum disorders (SSD) and a history of experiencing auditory verbal hallucinations (AVH) exhibit poor pitch discrimination relative to those with an SSD but no AVH history. The present study extended this research, asking if a lifetime history, and the current presence, of AVH exacerbated the pitch discrimination challenges that are seen in SSD. Participants completed a pitch discrimination task, where the tones presented differed in pitch by either 2 %, 5 %, 10 %, 25 % or 50 %. Pitch discrimination accuracy, sensitivity, reaction time (RT) and intra-individua

A limited cerebellar contribution to suprasecond timing across differing task demands.

The involvement of the cerebellum in suprasecond interval timing (i.e., timing in the seconds to minutes range) is controversial. A limited amount of evidence from humans, nonhuman primates, and rodents has shown that the lateral cerebellum, including the lateral cerebellar nucleus (LCN), may be necessary for successful suprasecond timing performance. However, many existing studies have pitfalls, such as limited timing outcome measures and confounded task demands. In addition, many existing studies relied on well-trained subjects. This approach may be a drawback, as the cerebellum is hypothesi

Putative rhythms in attentional switching can be explained by aperiodic temporal structure.

The neural and perceptual effects of attention were traditionally assumed to be sustained over time, but recent work suggests that covert attention rhythmically switches between objects at 3-8 Hz. Here I use simulations to demonstrate that the analysis approaches commonly used to test for rhythmic oscillations generate false positives in the presence of aperiodic temporal structure. I then propose two alternative analyses that are better able to discriminate between periodic and aperiodic structure in time series. Finally, I apply these alternative analyses to published datasets and find no ev

Microsecond interaural time difference discrimination restored by cochlear implants after neonatal deafness.

Spatial hearing in cochlear implant (CI) patients remains a major challenge, with many early deaf users reported to have no measurable sensitivity to interaural time differences (ITDs). Deprivation of binaural experience during an early critical period is often hypothesized to be the cause of this shortcoming. However, we show that neonatally deafened (ND) rats provided with precisely synchronized CI stimulation in adulthood can be trained to lateralize ITDs with essentially normal behavioral thresholds near 50 μs. Furthermore, comparable ND rats show high physiological sensitivity to ITDs imm

The causal future: The influence of shape features caused by external transformation on visual attention.

Previous studies have validated that participants can distinguish different origins of objects' shape features, teasing apart features caused by transformation (causal history) from those of the original shape. Considering bite as a transformation example, two experiments were designed to investigate the effect of causal history on the allocation of visual attention. Participants were presented with regular and familiar complete or bitten shapes in Experiment 1 and unfamiliar and irregular complete or bitten shapes in Experiment 2 over a range of stimulus onset asynchronies (SOAs). The task wa

New objects can capture attention without a unique luminance transient.

Recent evidence has suggested that new objects capture attention solely because they are typically accompanied by a unique luminance transient. In the present study, we presented a stationary pattern mask after an array of placeholders but before a subsequent search display. This allowed all of the search elements to be presented simultaneously, thereby eliminating the unique luminance transient associated with the appearance of any new objects. Under these circumstances, new objects still captured attention. In another experiment, we jiggled the mask. This caused new objects to lose their adv

Exploring the link between time to collision and representational momentum.

Previous research has shown that when a moving object is occluded prior to collision with another stationary object, observers tend to consistently underestimate the physical/actual time to collision (TTC). We examined whether mislocalization of the initial point of disappearance plays any role in this underestimation. To assess the contribution of mislocalization, we coupled a standard TTC paradigm with a representational-momentum paradigm. Representational momentum refers to the tendency to mislocalize the remembered stopping point of a moving object as being too far forward along an actual

The construction of a day by elderly widowers.

The way in which some elderly widowers living alone experientially organize time can be viewed as on a continuum structured around the notion of a "day" as a central organizing focus. Related to this is the role of a "daily highlight" in organizing daily activities. The continuing role of bereavement, effects of living alone, and other factors may help structure this experiential continuum.

Two-part stimulus integration and specific reading disability.

29 dyslexics and 29 control children were presented with two halves of a black cross, one-half being presented at varying interstimulus intervals after the other half. Both dichoptic and binocular presentations were used and separation thresholds were at greater interstimulus intervals for the dichoptic condition. Dyslexics had thresholds at greater intervals than controls. These differences were significant and there was no significant interaction of group by dichoptic condition. The relative magnitudes of difference between dyslexics and controls were as previously reported by Stanley and Ha

Subjective visual vertical in first time seafarers experiencing sea sickness.

OBJECTIVES: Sea sickness, a form of motion sickness, is a common condition among sailors on various sailing vessels, primarily due to their roll and pitch movements. While the exact neurobiological mechanisms remain unclear, the most widely accepted explanation is the sensory conflict theory, which identifies two main sources of conflict: discrepancies between visual and vestibular inputs and conflicts within the vestibular system itself. This study aims to evaluate otolith-mediated verticality perception in first-time seafarers on board a naval frigate ship using the Subjective Visual Vertica

The influence of malocclusion on social aspects in adults: study via eye tracking technology and questionnaire.

BACKGROUND: Smile esthetics has a strong influence on perception, attractiveness, and personal characteristics. It is unknown how malocclusions may influence the appearance of the individual's smile. This study aimed to investigate whether malocclusion affects the visual perception of esthetics, age, employability, honesty, intelligence and to meet its obligation in time in middle-aged adults. Facial frontal smiling photographs of a male and a female middle-aged adult with 3 different malocclusions were shown to and evaluated by 90 laypeople (non-dentists), divided into groups: young adults (1

Does Auditory Environment Predict Speech Perception Outcomes in Elderly Cochlear Implant Patients?

INTRODUCTION: Cochlear implantation (CI) is a reliable and safe means by which sensorineural hearing loss can be ameliorated in the elderly population. However, a high degree of variation exists in postimplantation hearing outcomes for which some modifiable factors of the daily natural auditory environment may be contributory. In this study, we analyze the relationship between cochlear implant patient age, natural auditory environment, and postimplantation speech perception among older adults. METHODS: Data log from automatic environment classification enabled sound processors of postlinguall
