OBJECTIVE: To determine to what degree changes in retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL) thickness after optic neuritis (ON) correlate with either visual recovery or impairment.
METHODS: ON can cause visible defects within the RNFL, which can be quantified using optical coherence tomography (OCT). It may be possible to predict visual recovery by measuring RNFL loss after ON. Fifty-four patients underwent repeated evaluations with optical coherence tomography and standardized ophthalmic testing after ON. Regression analyses were used to determine the relationship between RNFL thickness and visual fu

PURPOSE: To determine the optimal OCT-3 scanning protocol.
METHODS: Normal subjects, ocular hypertensive, and open-angle glaucoma patients were enrolled. The "fast" RNFL scan protocol consists of 3 consecutive circular scans, each containing 256 A-scans obtained in a single 1.92 second session. The "regular" RNFL scan protocol contains 3 separate circular scans, each of which consists of 512 A-scans and is obtained in 1.28 seconds (total 3.84 seconds). A customized 256-point scan was created from the 512-point "regular" RNFL scan by extracting the RNFL measurements from every second point. Me

Assessing nerve integrity and myelination after injury is necessary to provide insight for treatment strategies aimed at restoring neuromuscular function. Currently, this is largely done with electrical analysis, which lacks direct quantitative information. In vivo optical imaging with sufficient imaging depth and resolution could be used to assess the nerve microarchitecture. In this study, we examine the use of polarization sensitive-optical coherence tomography (PS-OCT) to quantitatively assess the sciatic nerve microenvironment through measurements of birefringence after applying a nerve c

Glaucoma-related retinal imaging using frequency domain optical coherence tomography (OCT) has become an important but not the only basis for the diagnosis and follow-up of glaucoma. The circumpapillary retinal nerve fiber layer thickness and the macular ganglion cell thickness are two commonly used structural parameters in glaucoma. Their diagnostic efficacy is similar, but each has different influencing factors. Clinically, these two parameters should be analyzed together to improve the specificity and sensitivity for detecting glaucomatous optic nerve damage. Recently, there have been quite

PURPOSE: Optic pathway gliomas (OPG) represent an important cause of visual loss in pediatric population. The indication of treatment is based on clinical or neuroimaging progression. Visual acuity loss is the most important symptom of disease progression, but children with OPG are frequently unable to complete the testing of visual function. Optical coherence tomography (OCT) was suggested as an objective tool for visual assessment. A literature review was performed in order to determine the role of retinal OCT as a surrogate marker of vision in children with OPG.
METHODS: The search was per

Optic neuritis (ON) is an inflammatory optic nerve injury, which is strongly associated with multiple sclerosis (MS). Optical coherence tomography (OCT) has the potential to provide a reliable means of capturing axonal deficits, which can be paired to tests of visual function to provide a structural-functional paradigm of brain injury. In this respect, the eye provides a unique view into the effects of central nervous system inflammation, which may enhance the understanding of disease mechanisms that contribute to neurological disability in MS. This review addresses the published experience wi
