Characterization of periodontal structures of enamelin-null mice.

BACKGROUND: Enamelin-null (ENAM(-/-)) mice have no enamel. When characterizing ENAM(-/-) mice, alveolar bone height reduction was observed, and it was hypothesized that enamel defects combined with diet are associated with the periodontal changes of ENAM(-/-)mice. The aim of the present study is to compare the dimension of interradicular bone of ENAM(-/-) (knock-out [KO]) with wild-type (WT) mice, maintained on hard (HC) or soft (SC) chow. METHODS: A total of 100 animals divided into four groups were studied at 3, 8, and 24 weeks of age: 1) KO/HC; 2) KO/SC; 3) WT/HC; and 4) WT/SC. Microcomput

Mechanical responses to orthodontic loading: a 3-dimensional finite element multi-tooth model.

INTRODUCTION: The initial mechanical response to orthodontic loading comprises biologic reactions that remain unclear, despite their clinical significance. We used a 3-dimensional finite element analysis to investigate the stress-strain responses of teeth to orthodontic loading. METHODS: The model was derived from computed tomography data, with adequate boundary conditions and tissue characterization, with orthodontic hardware to provide a more accurate reflection of events during orthodontic therapy. This study also incorporated the adjacent dentition. Two cases were analyzed: a single-tooth

Outcomes and Prognostic Factors of Auto-Transplanted Immature Third Molars: A 15-Year Retrospective Cohort Study.

AIM: To evaluate long-term survival, complete healing, and replacement root resorption after immature third-molar auto-transplantation and identify prognostic factors. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This retrospective single-centre cohort included 108 patients (116 immature and open-apex third molars) treated from 2002 to 2018. Fully mature closed-apex donor teeth were excluded. Survival and complete healing were estimated using Kaplan-Meier analysis, and prognostic factors were assessed using Cox proportional-hazards models. Replacement root resorption was explored using an exploratory logistic regr

An Analysis of the Proximity of Maxillary Posterior Teeth to the Maxillary Sinus Using Cone-beam Computed Tomography.

INTRODUCTION: It is known that the level of the maxillary sinus floor varies with age. Because few studies have investigated whether the position of the posterior roots relative to the maxillary sinus varied with the variation of the sinus floor or not, the present study assessed the position according to age. METHODS: Cone-beam computed tomographic images of 848 patients were reconstructed to evaluate the position of the posterior roots relative to the sinus floor, which were divided into 3 types, and quantify the distances between posterior root apexes and the adjacent border of the sinus f

Comparison of pH changes induced by calcium enriched mixture and those of calcium hydroxide in simulated root resorption defects.

INTRODUCTION: External resorption usually occurs after dental trauma and the loss of root cementum. Because it has the ability to induce alkaline pH, calcium hydroxide is used in treatment of external resorption, which is reportedly not free from disadvantages. Driven by such understanding, the aim of this in vitro study was to compare the pH changes induced by calcium enriched mixture (CEM) and those of calcium hydroxide in simulated root resorption defects. METHODS: Twenty-one paired extracted human premolars were cut to the length of 14 mm. Root canal preparation was performed by using Pro

Is there a relation between local bone quality as assessed on panoramic radiographs and alveolar bone level?

The aim was to explore the relation between radiographic bone quality on panoramic radiographs and relative alveolar bone level. Digital panoramic radiographs of 94 female patients were analysed (mean age, 44.5; range, 35-74). Radiographic density of the alveolar bone in the premolar region was determined using Agfa Musica software. Alveolar bone level and bone quality index (BQI) were also assessed. Relationships between bone density and BQI on one hand and the relative loss of alveolar bone level on the other were assessed. Mandibular bone density and loss of alveolar bone level were weakly

3D assessment of alveolar bone alterations in orthodontic movement among Indians.

Apical root resorption, which is characterised as a biological or abnormal phenomenon that shortens the length of the root apex, is additional typical iatrogenic impact of orthodontic tooth movement that may jeopardise the effectiveness of treatment and tooth lifespan. The main goals of the current retrospective investigation were to assess the dimensions of alveolar bone alterations that come along with orthodontic movement and to look into the frequency and extent of resorption of root in maxillary incisors across categories that were similarly managed with clear aligners (OCA) and fixed app

The potential prognostic value of some periodontal factors for tooth loss: a retrospective multilevel analysis on periodontal patients treated and maintained over 10 years.

BACKGROUND: The great challenge in clinical periodontology is assigning a prognosis to a periodontally affected patient. Many different factors can affect the long-term maintenance of periodontally compromised teeth. The main questions usually considered by the periodontist are: 1) Will a tooth lose more bone in the future? 2) Will the tooth itself be lost in the future? The purpose of this retrospective study was to evaluate the value of some clinical, genetic, and radiographic variables in predicting tooth loss in periodontal patients (aged 40 to 60 years) treated and maintained for 10 years

External apical root resorption: two case reports.

AIM: To present two cases of external root resorption and in so doing highlight rarer causative factors as well as the difficulties in classifying root resorption. SUMMARY: Root resorption in the permanent dentition is usually pathological. Local factors are the most frequent causes of resorption, most commonly excessive pressure and inflammation. However, many systemic abnormalities have been implicated in the resorption process. Resorption is often an incidental finding during routine examination. Otherwise, late in the disease process, tooth mobility or infection may arise. A rarer form of

Root surface treatment with vitamin C in tooth replantation: microscopic study in rats.

AIM: Late tooth replantation is a worthy procedure, especially in growing patients, being the best option for tooth avulsion. This study evaluated the effects of root surface treatment with 2% acidulated phosphate sodium fluoride and effervescent vitamin C (Redoxon) in late replantation. METHODS: Twenty rat teeth (Rattus norvegicus, albinus, Wistar) were extracted and left on a table for 6 h. Then, the dental papilla and enamel organ were sectioned and the pulp was removed through the apex. After removal of the periodontal ligament with a blade, the animals were divided into 2 groups: Group I

Surgical treatment for severe endodontic-periodontal lesion: A case report with 2-year follow-up.

BACKGROUND: Various surgical techniques have recently been developed for periodontal tissue regeneration, especially those do not involve any incisions in the interdental papillae at the regeneration site. These techniques have significant advantages for obtaining clinical attachment gain with least amount of gingival recession, however, may also have disadvantages such as limited field of surgical view, difficulty in debridement, and limited access only from the buccal side. This case report addresses a 2-year follow-up with a novel surgical approach to achieve periodontal regeneration that o

External root resorption during orthodontic treatment in root-filled teeth and contralateral teeth with vital pulp: A clinical study of contributing factors.

INTRODUCTION: There is a lack of research to support the belief that root canal treatment can be considered for stopping or decreasing external apical root resorption (EARR). There is conflicting evidence as to whether root-filled teeth are more or less likely to experience EARR after orthodontic treatment. The purpose of this study was to compare the degree of EARR of root-filled teeth with that of contralateral teeth with vital pulp after fixed orthodontic treatment. METHODS: The study sample consisted of 35 patients aged 25.23 ± 4.92 years who had at least 1 root-filled tooth before orthod

LRP1-deficient leptin receptor-positive cells in periodontal ligament tissue reduce alveolar bone mass by inhibiting bone formation.

OBJECTIVE: Leptin receptor-positive (LepR+) periodontal ligament (PDL) cells play a crucial role in osteogenesis during tooth socket healing and orthodontic tooth movement; however, the factors regulating osteoblast differentiation remain unclear. This study aimed to demonstrate the function of low-density lipoprotein receptor-related protein 1 (LRP1) in alveolar bone formation by examining conditional knockout (cKO) mice lacking LRP1 in LepR+ cells. DESIGN: Bone mass and formation were examined via bone morphometric analysis. Bone formation and resorption activities were determined via histo

Association between maxillary sinus pathologies and healthy teeth.

INTRODUCTION: The proximity of the roots to the maxillary sinus can create a variety of risks. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the relationship between the roots of healthy teeth and the maxillary sinus, as well as the occurrence of sinus pathologies. METHODS: Three radiologists analyzed 109 cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) images. The Kappa test was used to assess the intra- and inter-rater agreement. The chi-squared test and prevalence ratio were used to test the hypothesis that roots of healthy teeth in the maxillary sinus favored the occurrence of sinus pathologies (p=0.01). RESULTS: Intra-
