Prospective Study of Oral Health and Risk of Primary Open-Angle Glaucoma in Men: Data from the Health Professionals Follow-up Study.

PURPOSE: Tooth loss or periodontal disease is associated with systemic endothelial dysfunction, which has been implicated in primary open-angle glaucoma (POAG). The relationship between oral health and POAG has received limited attention. Thus, we evaluated the association between oral health history and risk of POAG and POAG subtypes. DESIGN: Prospective cohort study. PARTICIPANTS: Health Professionals Follow-up Study participants (40 536 men) followed biennially from 1986 to 2012. At each 2-year risk period, eligible participants were aged 40+ years, were free of POAG, and reported eye exa…

Tooth rotational control with varying attachment configurations in clear aligners under compromised periodontal ligament support: a finite element study.

BACKGROUND: With the high prevalence of periodontitis, tooth rotation resulting from periodontal damage can be corrected through orthodontic treatment; however, the biomechanical complexity of tooth movement in compromised periodontal tissues, combined with the inherently low rotation accuracy of clear aligners, present significant challenges to tooth rotational control. This finite element study aimed to explore appropriate attachment configurations for tooth rotation under periodontally compromised conditions. METHODS: Based on cone beam computed tomography data of a patient, three-dimension

Management of a transmigrated mandibular canine.

The purpose of this article is to report the management of a transmigrated mandibular canine with emphasis on saving the tooth as natural part rather than surgical removal of the transmigrated tooth. There are several treatment options proposed for impacted mandibular canines including surgical removal, exposure and orthodontic alignment, intra-alveolar tooth transplantation (surgical repositioning of a tooth in its alveolar socket) and observation. The technique, surgical repositioning of a tooth involves the surgical extraction of impacted tooth and fixation in the correct position in the de

A 10-year retrospective study of periodontal disease progression.

The purpose of this study was to record the rate of periodontal disease progression over a 10-year period with respect to individual subject, age and tooth type. 283 subjects, who had undergone a full-mouth radiographic examination in 1974-76 and at that time were 25-70 years old, were randomly selected from a larger patient sample for a new radiographic examination in 1985-86. 201 subjects (71%) agreed to participate. For each respondent, tooth loss over the 10-year period was calculated. The radiographic bone height at the mesial and distal aspect of all teeth was assessed by measuring the d…

Comparative evaluation of the pontic shield technique versus whole tooth extraction on labial crestal bone resorption using cone-beam computed tomography in the maxillary anterior region: A randomized controlled clinical trial.

INTRODUCTION: Following tooth extraction, there is comparatively more bone loss at the buccal aspect at 3 months of healing, which may result in 56% bone loss due to resorption of the bucco-facial ridge contour. In the socket shield technique, a tooth is planned for extraction in such a way that the tooth is sectioned in two halves, a palatal section is removed and the facial part is retained. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Twenty-six sites, i.e., 13 sites requiring partial tooth extraction (test sites) and 13 sites with whole tooth extraction (control sites), in the maxillary anterior region were in

Oral Function and the Oral Microbiome in the Elderly in the Kyotango Area.

INTRODUCTION: Prevention of tooth loss contributes to an extended life expectancy, namely longevity. Aging-related oral hypofunction, including tooth loss, markedly increases the risks of functional disorder and mortality. Dysbiosis of the oral microbiome has recently been associated with various diseases, such as liver cirrhosis, pancreatic cancer, colorectal cancer, and inflammatory bowel disease. Therefore, the relationship between the oral microbiome and systemic health has been attracting increasing attention. In the present study, we examined oral function and the oral microbiome in the …

Clinical implications of early loss of a lower deciduous canine.

In crowded dental arches, the permanent lateral incisors often erupt and resorb the mesial portion of the root of deciduous canines, causing their premature loss. Therefore, knowledge on clinical aspects related to etiologic factors is necessary to pediatric orthodontists and clinical dentists for diagnosis and treatment with regard to incisor crowding and adjustment. The aim of the present study was to describe a clinical case characterized by the unilateral loss of a lower deciduous canine, offering clinical considerations on this issue and discussing the various procedures implemented to pr

Two Severely Compromised Teeth Restored Using Digital Planning Combined With Double Orthodontic Magnetic Extrusion: A Case Report.

Tooth tissue loss due to dental caries is frequently challenging to restore, and this loss is made worse by proximal tooth borders that extend below the gingival margin. This report describes a digitally designed case in which the ferrule and supracrestal tissue attachment were preserved by simultaneous double magnetic extrusion of two root filled teeth. A 67-year-old male presented with the chief concern of a fractured maxillary left canine. The maxillary left lateral incisor and canine underwent rapid magnetic extrusion to create ferrules (3 mm). Eighteen months after treatment, the restorat

[Reattachment or new attachment in apical-marginal periodontal bone loss. A clinical-histological discussion].

Loss of marginal alveolar bone of the tooth can be caused by periodontal, pulpal-periapical, or a combined pulpal and periodontal disease. The regeneration is supported by the formation of reattachment or new attachment. Reattachment is probably the usual healing process in periapical surgery of the tooth with apicomarginal bone loss caused by pulpal-periapical disease. In animal experiments (rats, dogs) ist was well documented, that the cells which repopulate the periodontal wound adjacent to the root surface determine the nature of the attachment formed.

[Asymptomatic third molars; To remove or not to remove?].

Three adult patients, ages 28 (female), 36 (male) and 53 (male), respectively, were referred by their dentists to an orofacial surgeon concerning problems with their third molars. With the woman, teeth 38 and 48 were removed. After the removal of tooth 38, a permanent periodontal attachment loss of the adjoining second molar occurred. With the second patient, retention of tooth 48 caused serious damage to the adjoining second molar, resulting in the loss of the tooth. At the time of removal, there was a question of increased risk of inflammatory complications and nerve damage. With the third p
