Template-aided and freehand guiding plane preparation for removable partial dentures: A randomized controlled trial.

PURPOSE: To evaluate the accuracy of guiding plane preparation for removable partial dentures (RPDs) using 3D-printed templates compared to the freehand method. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Twenty partially edentulous patients requiring RPDs were randomly divided into two groups: the template-aided group (n = 10) and the freehand group (n = 10). Fifty-six guiding planes were prepared by a single clinician using two different methods. The angle deviation between the prepared guiding plane and the RPD path of placement was measured for both groups. The 3D deviations between the prepared guiding plane

Relationship between tooth loss and tongue pressure and the effectiveness of removable denture for older people requiring long-term care.

BACKGROUND/PURPOSE: Aspiration pneumonia is a major health concern among older adults, particularly those requiring long-term care. It is often caused by silent aspiration of saliva-containing pathogenic bacteria and exacerbated by impaired oral and swallowing functions. Tongue pressure is a key factor in maintaining these functions, and its decline is associated with increased bacterial amount in the saliva and higher mortality. However, the relationship among tongue pressure, occlusal status, and prosthetic treatment in older individuals requiring care remains unclear. This study aimed to in

In vitro and in vivo evaluation of diamond-coated strips.

OBJECTIVE: To test in vitro and in vivo the wear performance of diamond-coated strips by means of tribological testing and scanning electronic microscope (SEM). MATERIALS AND METHODS: To evaluate the in vitro wear performance, a tribological test was performed by a standard tribometer. The abrasive strips slid against stationary, freshly extracted premolars fixed in resin blocks, at a 2-newton load. At the end of the tribological test, the residual surface of the strip was observed by means of SEM analysis, which was performed every 50 meters until reaching 300 meters. For the in vivo analysi

The value of oral health screening for athletes.

Oral health problems have been reported by athletes to negatively affect their performance, therefore improved oral health has the potential to enhance performance. Reduced performance due to poor oral health is unacceptable and preventable. A rapid literature review was undertaken. Oral diseases such as caries, erosive tooth wear and periodontal diseases do not present with pain in their early stages, and athletes may delay a dental check or even treatment until they perceive a problem. Oral health promotion in sport is most likely to be successful if it is embedded within overall athlete gen…

[Chewing on bruxism: associations, consequences and management].

In this second part of a diptych on bruxism, the focus is on the associations of this masticatory muscle activity with other sleep-related c … in and dysfunction, periodontal and endodontic problems, failures of restorations and implants, and tooth wear. In some cases, these consequences are severe enough to justify treatment of bruxism. In all other cases, there is no indication for diagnostics and treatment, given the possible positive consequences. If treatment is indicated, modalities should be …

Oral and dental health in alcohol misusing patients.

Dental and oral health and their relationship to nutritional status among a group of alcohol misusers (n = 107) from south London is reported. The Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test (AUDIT) questionnaire was validated as an accurate and reliable screening questionnaire for use in alcohol misuse detection by a dentist. Half of the study population consumed >200 units of alcohol/week, and 80% were heavy smokers. A high incidence of tooth wear and trauma to the dentition was recorded. Eight subjects had oral mucosal lesions, including two previously treated carcinomas. The dental health in…

Conservative approach to treating severe tetracycline staining: a 12-month follow-up.

Severe tetracycline staining may affect the esthetics of teeth and the self-esteem of patients. This case report describes minimally invasive treatment with dental bleaching and direct restorations to improve the esthetics of tetracycline-stained teeth in a 44-year-old woman. All of the patient's teeth were affected by grayish brown staining, and the maxillary central incisors demonstrated incisal wear. The buccal angulation of the anterior teeth and the patient's Class II skeletal profile hindered the use of direct or indirect veneer restorations. The proposed treatment was home bleaching wit

Gingival recession associated with noncarious cervical lesions: combined periodontal-restorative approach and the treatment of long-term esthetic complications.

Buccal gingival recession is a prevalent problem in populations with a high standard of oral hygiene and is often associated with noncarious cervical lesions (NCCLs), leading to the need for a combined periodontal-restorative approach for better esthetic and functional results. In the literature, resin-modified glass ionomer (RMGI) restorations associated with periodontal surgery have been shown to achieve significant root coverage and reduction of dentin sensitivity; however, changes to the color of some of those restorations have been observed, which could compromise esthetics. Therefore, th

Implementing 3D-printed indexing devices and contemporary scanning techniques for complete-arch implant-supported rehabilitations: A clinical case report.

A sixty-eight-year-old male presented to the dental clinic seeking a complete mouth rehabilitation. He exhibited generalized dental caries, dental staining, cervical lesions, fremitus, and anterior wear. After declining tooth-retaining options, he elected full-mouth extractions with immediately loaded implant-supported prostheses. A hybrid workflow, incorporating both digital and conventional steps, was used to plan treatment. The cone-beam computed tomography-derived anatomical data were integrated with the articulated diagnostic casts using a custom three‑dimensional (3D)-printed hexagonal i

Comparison of Marginal Fracture Between Conventional and Bonded Amalgam Restorations in Posterior Permanent Molar Teeth.

Background/objectives Dental amalgam has been a successful restoration for over a century. However, restoration failures due to secondary caries, fractured teeth or restorations, marginal deficiencies, tooth wear, and secondary caries remain significant concerns. Amalgam-bond, known for its ability to bond amalgam to the tooth structure and prevent percolation, forms a strong bond with vital dentin. This study aimed to compare the outcome of marginal fractures in bonded amalgam and conventional amalgam posterior restorations among patients at a tertiary care dental hospital. Materials and meth…

Chapter 4: Development Defects of Enamel and Dentine and Coronal Caries.

The development of the human dentition is prone to disruption due to its delicate and complex nature - including variations in tooth number and anatomical form and in the characteristics of enamel, dentine, and cementum. This chapter will focus on developmental defects of dental enamel (DDE) and dentine (DDD), which can be associated with considerable treatment burden on an individual, often related to the change in dental hard tissue characteristics in those at increased caries risk. DDE are prevalent and can be related to genetic conditions such as amelogenesis imperfecta and environmental c
