A case of laryngeal cancer complicated with Hodgkin's lymphoma treated in the Department of Otolaryngology Head and neck surgery of the First Hospital of Jilin University was reported. Under general anesthesia, right vertical partial laryngectomy, bilateral neck lymph node functional dissection and temporary tracheotomy were performed. No recurrence was found in laryngoscope and color Doppler ultrasound of neck lymph nodes 3 and 5 months after operation.

Four attacks of mucosal angioneurotic oedema occurred in a 57-year-old woman, requiring tracheotomy for one episode. Decreased or non-measurable levels of complement components C1q, C-1-INH and C4 pointed to a complement consumption. The basic disease was a pleomorphic immunocytoma with the production of monoclonal IgM. Treatment with danazol, 600 mg daily, raised the serum level of C-1-INH, but not of C4.

A case of neurofibromatosis involving the larynx is added to the 19 previously reported cases; furthermore, it represents the only reported case of plexiform ganglioneurofibroma of the larynx in Von Recklinghausen's disease. The reported cases of neurofibromatosis with laryngeal involvement in the world literature are discussed and summarized. The main clinical symptoms are dyspnea, dysphonia and dysphagia which occasionally require tracheotomy when the condition is recognized. Elective surgical excision is the treatment of choice.

The experience in treating 5 patients with acute epiglottitis at our Clinic, from 1986-1989, has been presented. The importance of setting an on-time diagnosis and the application of Urbason therapy has been pointed out. We have indicated the specification of this disease, which is a potentially fatal epiglottidean and supraglottic inflammation. All of these cases were successfully solved by suitable antibiotic and Urbason therapy without preliminary tracheotomy or intubation.

INTRODUCTION: Laryngotracheal stenosis can be caused after traumatic injuries to the neck from the subglottic larynx to the trachea. INTRODUCTION: The incidence of cricoarytenoid joint fixation in case of rheumatoid arthritis is 17 to 33%. In later stages of rheumatoid arthritis, a gradual fixation of cricoarytenoid joint develops and both halves of the larynx become less movable which calls for endotracheal intubation; while total fixation of this joint demands surgical tracheotomy. Hashimoto thyroiditis can display symptoms which are difficult to distinguish from the ones present in total fixation of cricoarytenoid joint caused by rheumatoid arthritis.

The anterior cricoid split (ACS) has been described as an alternative to tracheotomy in management of the premature infant who develops upper airway compromise after extubation. Sixteen patients at the Children's Hospital National Medical Center (CHNMC) and ten patients at four other hospitals had the ACS operation. A 93-year-old female, who had post-operative respiratory insufficiency, was treated with artificial ventilation for 8 days. Immediately after extubation, dyspnea, cyanosis and unconsciousness occurred. Severe laryngeal edema was found by bronchofiberscopy and reintubation seemed impossible. She underwent emergency tracheotomy and barely survived the critical state. It should be kept in mind that severe laryngeal edema might develop immediately after long term intubation in supergeriatric patients associated with hyponutrition.

Acquired OC, although rare, can occur as a result of neurologic abnormalities, and its diagnosis is dependent on an understanding of all causes of altered ventilation, including sleep disturbances--central, obstructive, or mixed. A neurologic evaluation, appropriate radiologic studies, and sleep workup will in most cases delineate the problem. Treatment includes a tracheotomy and ventilator support. Phrenic nerve pacing is reserved for patients with long-term disease and viable phrenic nerves.

Hemophilus influenzae type B (30 cases), untyped (two cases), and type A (one case), and H parainfluenzae (one case) were recovered in blood cultures from 44 cultures of 53 children with acute epiglottitis. These patients were managed by observation, tracheotomy, or intubation, with intubation being the most satisfactory. Both ampicillin and chloramphenicol have been employed recently because of the emergence of ampicillin resistance, which was 18.7% of all cases in 1977.
