Advancing Surgical Quality: Performance Measures and Risk Adjustment in Modern Thoracic Surgery.

Thoracic surgery has transitioned from simple mortality tracking to more complex, risk-adjusted performance metrics. This article reviews this evolution, applying a structure-process-outcome framework to detail current performance indicators in the field. It then discusses how large registries and advanced statistical methods facilitate fair benchmarking and point-of-care decision support, while also addressing limitations, including incomplete data and the absence of social risk considerations. It concludes by exploring future directions, including frailty adjustment, equity-focused modeling,

Functional anatomy of subcortical circuits issuing from or integrating at the human brainstem.

The functional organization of the main human brainstem centers and circuits are described as revealed in post-mortem material with high-resolution structural magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) and diffusion tensor tractography (DTT) acquired at ultra-high magnetic field 7 T. The description is complemented with a conventional in vivo fiber tracking study of the descending motor pathways. This type of neuroanatomic depiction of nuclei and nerve tracts at very high spatial resolution opens new possibilities to analyze the fine structure and circuits of the human br

Predicting global thermospheric neutral density during periods with high geomagnetic activity.

Estimating global and multi-level Thermosphere Neutral Density (TND) is important for studying coupling processes within the upper atmosphere, and for applications like orbit prediction. Models are applied for predicting TND changes, however, their performance can be improved by accounting for the simplicity of model structure and the sampling limitations of model inputs. In this study, a simultaneous Calibration and Data Assimilation (C/DA) algorithm is applied to integrate freely available CHAMP, GRACE, and Swarm derived TND measurements into the NRLMSISE-00 model. The improved model, called

Long-Term Improvement in Urinary Incontinence in an Elite Female Athlete Through the Laser Treatment: A Case Report.

Stress urinary incontinence (SUI) is increasing in elite female athletes (EFAs), affecting competition results and quality of life. Pelvic floor muscle training (PFMT) is the first-line treatment for SUI, and surgery is generally performed when PFMT is insufficient. However, in EFA, there are few cases in which surgery is performed and fewer reports. Therefore, there is no known general treatment strategy for EFA with SUI. In our study, a 23-year-old track-and-field medalist with severe SUI was successfully treated with a vaginal and urethral erbium-doped yttrium aluminum garnet laser (VEL + U

Nanoscale visualization of plasmon-enhanced hydrogen activation on a Pt(111) surface.

Efficient H2 activation under mild conditions is crucial for achieving energy-efficient catalytic hydrogenation, but this remains a major challenge. Here we demonstrate nanoscale visualization of plasmon-enhanced H2 activation on Pt(111) at room temperature under visible light by employing a combination of spectroscopic and modelling methods. In situ tip-enhanced Raman spectroscopy tracked H2 activation through H-assisted desorption of an oligomeric phenylene-ethynylene thiolate reporter, while hyperspectral imaging revealed ~20% enhancement in the 180-300 nm region around the near field. Record linkage in Scotland and its applications to health research.

AIMS AND OBJECTIVES: This paper will focus on the key concepts behind record linkage and describe how probability matching of Scottish health records can be used for national health research. BACKGROUND: Record linkage can bring together two or more records relating to the same individual. This allows information from multiple sources to be joined together to produce richer data sets for research purposes and has wide applicability in public health and epidemiological research. The probability matching techniques underpinning record linkage bring together records on a patient basis using key

MRI-Guided Reduced-Volume Radiation Therapy for Early-Stage Glottic Cancer:A Prospective Phase 1 Trial With Quantification of Laryngeal Motion.

PURPOSE: Five to 7 weeks of whole-larynx radiation therapy (RT) is standard for treatment of early-stage glottic cancer. Previous studies evaluated computed tomography-guided hypofractionated or stereotactic treatment to a smaller volume. Magnetic resonance-guided RT (MRgRT) allows real-time motion tracking and gating by continuously imaging the larynx. We performed the first prospective study of MRgRT in patients with early-stage glottic cancer with quantification of laryngeal motion. METHODS AND MATERIALS: This phase 1 trial evaluated MRgRT in patients with stage I/II squamous cell glottic

Amplification of oxidative stress by lipid surface-coated single-atom Au nanozymes for oral cancer photodynamic therapy.

Single-atom nanozymes (SANs) are the latest trend in biomaterials research and promote the application of single atoms in biological fields and the realization of protein catalysis in vivo with inorganic nanoparticles. Carbon quantum dots (CDs) have excellent biocompatibility and fluorescence properties as a substrate carrying a single atom. It is difficult to break through pure-phase single-atom materials with quantum dots as carriers. In addition, there is currently no related research in the single-atom field in the context of oral cancer, especially head and neck squamous cell carcinoma. T

Flexible sensor-based biomechanical evaluation of low-back exoskeleton use in lifting.

This study aimed to establish an ambulatory field-friendly system based on miniaturised wireless flexible sensors for studying the biomechanics of human-exoskeleton interactions. Twelve healthy adults performed symmetric lifting with and without a passive low-back exoskeleton, while their movements were tracked using both a flexible sensor system and a conventional motion capture (MoCap) system synchronously. Novel algorithms were developed to convert the raw acceleration, gyroscope, and biopotential signals from the flexible sensors into kinematic and dynamic measures. Results showed that the

Remapping the remembered target location for anti-saccades in human posterior parietal cortex.

We used functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) to investigate the role of the human posterior parietal cortex (PPC) in anti-saccades. To do so, we exploited the laterality of a subregion of the PPC for remembered target location. Using an event-related design, we tracked fMRI signal changes in this region while subjects remembered the location of a flashed target, then were instructed to plan either an anti- or pro-saccade to that location, and finally were instructed to execute the movement. At first, the region responded preferentially to the memory of a target location presented in th

Quantitative Analysis of Cytoplasmic Viscosity in Colorectal Cancer Cells by Differential Dynamic Microscopy of Genetically Encoded Nanoparticles.

The viscosity of the cytoplasm plays a key role in regulating molecular diffusion and cellular mechanics, yet quantifying it in living cells remains technically challenging. Genetically encoded multimeric nanoparticles (GEMs) have emerged as useful probes for intracellular microrheology; however, current analyses rely on single-particle tracking, which is limited by probe density, imaging noise, and expression variability. Here, we combine GEMs with differential dynamic microscopy (DDM) to enable quantitative, noninvasive, and rapid measurement of intracellular viscosity using standard wide-fi

Nonlinear relationships between eye gaze and recognition accuracy for ethnic ingroup and outgroup faces.

Researchers have used eye-tracking measures to explore the relationship between face encoding and recognition, including the impact of ethnicity on this relationship. Previous studies offer a variety of conflicting conclusions. This confusion may stem from misestimation of the relationship between encoding and recognition. First, most previous models fail to account for the structure of eye-tracking data, potentially falling prey to Simpson's paradox. Second, previous models assume a linear relationship between attention (e.g., the number of fixations to a to-be-remembered face) and recognitio

A Compact Surgical Robot System for Craniomaxillofacial Surgery and its Preliminary Study.

Craniomaxillofacial surgery has the characteristics of complex anatomical structure, narrow surgical field, and easy damage to nerves, blood vessels, and other structures. Compared with the traditional bare-hand operation, robot-assisted craniofacial surgery is expected to achieve a more stable and accurate surgical operation. So we have developed a robot-assisted craniofacial surgery system. A compact mechanism design was adopted for the robot system, integrates with visual and force perception modules. The motion analysis and working space analysis are carried out on the mechanical structure

Validating activity indices from camera traps for commensal rodents and other wildlife in and around farm buildings.

BACKGROUND: Indices of rodent activity are used as indicators of population change during field evaluation of rodenticides. We investigated the potential for using camera traps to determine activity indices for commensal rodents living in and around farm buildings, and sought to compare these indices against previously calibrated survey methods. RESULTS: We recorded 41 263 images of 23 species, including Norway rats (Rattus norvegicus Berk.) and house mice (Mus musculus L.). We found a positive correlation between activity indices from camera traps and activity indices from a method (footprin
