We present a 69-year-old transgender woman who underwent gender-affirming surgery in 1998 and gender-affirming hormone therapy (cyproterone acetate (CPA) and estradiol) since this time. Following an MRI scan to investigate tremor in 2013, an incidental left anterior clinoid and right petrous meningioma were identified. Subtotal surgical resection was achieved for the anterior clinoid meningioma (WHO grade 1, meningothelial subtype). At follow-up in 2016, an olfactory groove meningioma and left greater wing of sphenoid meningioma were identified. By 2017, both tumours, along with the petrous me

This study elucidated the prevalence and correlates of four types of HIV stigma among women living with HIV (WLWH). Data were drawn from 2 years (September 1/15 to August 31/17) of follow-up from a longitudinal community-based open cohort of 215 cisgender or transgender WLWH who lived and/or accessed care in Metro Vancouver, Canada (2014-present). Bivariate and multivariable cumulative logistic regression using generalized estimating equations for repeated measures were used to examine correlates of HIV stigma, including: (1) anticipated; (2) enacted; (3) internalized; and (4) perceived stigma

The authors examine the impact of countertransference in two clinical cases of transgender patients treated by two cisgender analysts who are accustomed to receiving nonconforming gender patients in France and Brazil. The context is that of contemporary views of transphobic countertransference reactions, specifically the work of Griffin Hansbury, who describes these reactions in terms of "unthinkable anxieties." Like other theorists with expanding notions of countertransference, the authors view transphobia in analysis as an "instrument of research" and consider how taking responsibility for t

PURPOSE: Hormone replacement therapy (HRT) has become a mainstay medical treatment option for management of gender dysphoria in transgender patients of both biologic sexes. Very little is known about the long-term effects of steroid hormone modulation on breast tissue in this population. Most of the data available on the effects of HRT on breast and reproductive tissues come from studies of postmenopausal cisgender women. Therapeutic regimens are often provider-dependent, and there, are no uniform guidelines in place for cancer surveillance in transgender patients. In this review, we present w

Transsexual persons often undergo the process of transition, which is a long, multi-stage procedure. One of the stages, often final, is the lawful reassignment of sex, which is often perceived by transsexual individuals as more meaningful than the medical interventions. The aim of the study was to analyze the current legal situation of transsexual individuals in Poland. An in-depth review of legal documents and their association with current medical knowledge on transsexualism together with a presentation of solutions established worldwide were performed. Analyzed aspects include surgical inte

BACKGROUND: Brain sexual differentiation is a process that results from the effects of sex steroids on the developing brain. Evidence shows that epigenetics plays a main role in the formation of enduring brain sex differences and that the estrogen receptor α (ESR1) is one of the implicated genes.
AIM: To analyze whether the methylation of region III (RIII) of the ESR1 promoter is involved in the biological basis of gender dysphoria.
METHODS: We carried out a prospective study of the CpG methylation profile of RIII (-1,188 to -790 bp) of the ESR1 promoter using bisulfite genomic sequencing in

Antiandrogens are frequently used with estradiol in transgender women seeking feminization. Antiandrogens act by various mechanisms to decrease the production or effects of testosterone, but it is unclear which antiandrogen is most effective at feminization. A systematic review was performed using PRISMA guidelines. We searched online databases (Medline, Embase and PsycINFO) and references of relevant articles for studies of antiandrogens in transgender women aged 16+ years to achieve feminization (namely changes in breast size, body composition, facial or body hair) or changes in serum total

Sex hormones and their respective receptors affect vascular function differently in men and women, so it is reasonable to assume they play a role in the sex differences in cardiovascular disease states. This review focuses on how the effects of testosterone on arterial vessels impact the female vasculature. In women with androgen-excess polycystic ovary syndrome, and in transgender men, testosterone exposure is associated with high blood pressure, endothelial dysfunction, and dyslipidemia. These relationships suggest that androgens may exert pathophysiological effects on the female vasculature
