INTRODUCTION: Trichuris trichiura, a soil-transmitted helminth, resides in the large intestine of humans, causing an asymptomatic disease known as trichuriasis. This global health concern is particularly prevalent in low- or middle-income countries, representing a significant burden on public health as one of the most neglected tropical diseases. The diminishing effects of currently available anthelmintic drugs, attributed to escalating drug resistance, warrants an urgent need for alternative and more potent vaccines or drugs. A substantial portion of the proteins in the T. trichiura genome ar…

Trichuriasis is the clinical disease of animals infected with the parasite of the genus Trichuris. This review attempts to present information on Trichuris spp. infestation in neo-tropical rodents that are utilized for meat consumption by humans. Neo-tropical rodents utilized for meat production can be divided into two categories: those that have been domesticated, which include the guinea pig (Cavia porcellus), and those that are on the verge of domestication, such as the capybara (Hydrochoerus hydrochaeris), lappe (Cuniculus paca/Agouti paca), and agouti (Dasyprocta leporina). This document …

School-aged children (SAC) have a considerable burden of intestinal schistosomiasis in Madagascar yet its burden in pre-school aged children … and heavy (3.6%). Soil-transmitted helminthiasis was noted, prevalence of ascariasis was 18.8% and trichuriasis was 33.8% (hookworm was not reported). Co-infection of intestinal schistosomiasis and soil-transmitted helminthiasis occurred in 36.3% of PSAC. These results provide solid evidence highlighting the overlooked burden of intestinal schistosomiasis in …

The human whipworm, Trichuris trichiura, is estimated to infect 289.6 million people globally. Control of human trichuriasis is a particular challenge, as most anthelmintics have a limited single-dose efficacy, with the striking exception of the narrow-spectrum anthelmintic, oxantel. We recently identified a novel ACR-16-like subunit from the pig whipworm, T. suis which gave rise to a functional acetylcholine receptor (nAChR) preferentially activated by oxantel. However, there is no ion channel described in the mouse model parasite T. muris so far. Here, we have identified the ACR-16-like and …

OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the effect of ivermectin mass drug administration on strongyloidiasis and other soil transmitted helminthiases.
MET … distribution of ivermectin had a significant impact on the prevalence of strongyloidiasis, less on trichuriasis and apparently no effect on ascariasis and hookworm infections.

The neglected tropical diseases (NTDs) are a group of 17 lesser known chronic infections which predominantly affect poor and disenfranchised communities. There are a number of NTDs that cause significant global morbidity in children, including the three major soil transmitted helminth (STH) infections (ascariasis, trichuriasis and hookworm infection), schistosomiasis and trachoma. These NTDs, together with lymphatic filariasis and onchocerciasis, are currently being targeted for global control and elimination through mass drug administration (MDA) campaigns. They represent the most common NTDs…

OBJECTIVES: To review the prevalence, incidence, and geographic distribution of the major neglected infections of poverty in Europe as a bas … ases.
RESULTS: In Eastern Europe, the soil-transmitted helminth infections (especially ascariasis, trichuriasis, and toxocariasis), giardiasis, and toxoplasmosis remain endemic. High incidence rates of selected food-borne helminthiases including trichinellosis, opisthorchiasis, taeniasis, and echinococcosis also occur, while brucellosis and leptospirosis repr …

The murine intestinal nematode Trichuris muris provides an invaluable model of human infection with T. trichiura. Hence, analysis of the immunological responses in the mouse may elucidate the mechanisms of immunity to trichuriasis in man. The work described here investigates the roles of eosinophils, mast cells and antibody-dependent cell-mediated cytotoxicity (ADCC) in the elimination of T. muris from the host gut. Following ablation of IL-5, and hence eosinophilia, mice usually resistant to T. muris infection remained so. Further, blocking the stem cell factor receptor, c-kit, to facilitate …

There is a considerable amount of speculations concerning the presence of symptoms in various parasitic infections. The aim of the present s … ction was 56.0%. Giardiasis was the commonest infection (34.7%), followed by Ascariasis (24.4%) and Trichuriasis (4.6%). Boys showed a significantly higher prevalence than girls (58.3% vs. 52.9%, p<0.01). Social children were more infected with G. lamblia than unsocial ones (39.6% vs. 22.1%, p<0.01). Vomiting was strongly associated with G. lamblia infection ( …

BACKGROUND: Trichuriasis, caused by the nematodes Trichuris trichiura and Trichuris incognita, affects an estimated 267 million people worldwide, particularly children. Currently available treatments (albendazole and mebendazole) fail to achieve sufficient cure rates. Oxantel pamoate is a drug known for its trichuricidal activity. In this study, we aimed to assess whether a newly developed, child-friendly oxantel pamoate formulation is superior to mebendazole, one of WHO's recommended treatments for trichuriasis.
METHODS: We conducted a randomised, single-blind, phase 2 trial in a primary sch…

Currently, there is limited available information on the epidemiology of parasitic infections in captive non-human primates (NHPs) and their zoonotic potential. However, numerous cases of helminth infections in NHPs have been documented in several zoos around the world, with one of the most prevalent being those of the genus Trichuris. The main objective of this study is to investigate the occurrence of infection by Trichuris spp. in primates from zoological gardens in Spain and to ascertain, at the species level, the specific Trichuris species harbored by these hosts by using mitochondrial an

The human whipworm Trichuris trichiura infects 289 million people worldwide, resulting in substantial morbidity. Whipworm infections are difficult to treat due to low cure rates and high reinfection rates. Interactions between whipworm and its host's intestinal microbiome present a potential novel target for infection control or prevention but are very complicated and are identified using inconsistent methodology and sample types across the literature, limiting their potential usefulness. Here, we used a combined 16S rRNA gene OTU analysis approach (QIIME2) for samples from humans and mice inf

Most parasitologists face a conundrum throughout their careers: 'which parasite eggs are more resistant to environmental stress, Ascaris spp. or Trichuris spp.?' In this analysis, our experimental and statistical analyses demonstrated that Trichuris sp. is more resistant than Ascaris sp. We highlight that desiccation exerts a major effect on the conservation of Ascaris eggs, and this may result in an underestimation of Ascaris eggs in paleoparasitological records. This observation can be extrapolated to more modern scenarios, for example, parasitological research in animal feces from semiarid
