Myositis Ossificans Traumatica of Bilateral Sternocleidomastoid Muscles After Chiropractor Adjustment: A Case Report.

A woman in her 20s with a past medical history of surgical debulking of a right neck mass presented to the hospital for persistent and worsening right shoulder pain. The shoulder pain was associated with trismus and back and neck pain. A CT scan of the neck with contrast revealed post-surgical changes with increased heterotopic ossification throughout the surgical site extending to the supraclavicular soft tissues and the left sternocleidomastoid muscle, suggesting muscle ossification. A biopsy was performed, and the patient was diagnosed with myositis ossificans (MO). Initial treatment began …

Oral Rehabilitation of Marginal Maxillectomy Patient After Local Flap Reconstruction.

The treatment of oral cancer can lead to various oral complications, including oral defects, tissue deformation, and trismus in patients who have undergone oral cancer surgery with resection of any part of the maxillary. Restoring the ability to chew, swallow, and maintain esthetics is essential and a significant challenge. The aim of this study was to report a successful clinical case of preprosthetic surgery and prosthetic rehabilitation of a 65-year-old man who had undergone marginal maxillectomy, resulting in tissue scarring and a significant reduction in maximal mouth opening. The oral re…

Mandibular Condyle Osteoma.

BACKGROUND: Osteoma is a benign tumor composed of both cortical and cancellous bones that increase in size with continuous formation of bone. The pathogenesis is unknown. Osteomas can cause symptoms depending on their location and size. They can be asymptomatic or symptomatic, with trismus, limitation of mouth opening, and progressive malocclusion with facial asymmetry and can be painful. AIM: The aim of this paper is to report an unusual case of osteoma in the mandibular condylar neck and review the cases of mandibular condyle osteomas that have been reported in the last 15 years. CONCLUSIO…

Root coverage with buccal fat pad placed on restored cervical abrasion: Case report with three-year follow-up.

A patient was reported with Class II gingival recession (GR) of 5 mm. After restoring abrasion with glass ionomer cement, a full-thickness flap was raised and using blunt dissection through the buccinator and loose surrounding fascia buccal fat pad (BFP) was exposed into the mouth. It was easily spread over the maxillary roots of 14, 15, and 16. It was secured and immobilized using sutures. Postoperatively, the patient did not report swelling or trismus. At 3-year postoperative, gingival margin was at cementoenamel junction, stable and healthy and did not show any recession. Thus, it can be co…

Oral submucous fibrosis: Newer proposed classification with critical updates in pathogenesis and management strategies.

Oral submucous fibrosis (OSMF) is an oral precancerous condition characterized by inflammation and progressive fibrosis of the submucosal tissues resulting in marked rigidity and trismus. OSMF still remains a dilemma to the clinicians due to elusive pathogenesis and less well-defined classification systems. Over the years, many classification systems have been documented in medical literature based on clinical, histopathological, or functional aspects. However, none of these classifications have achieved universal acceptance. Each classification has its own merits and demerits. An attempt is m…

Eagle Syndrome Secondary to Osteoradionecrosis of the Styloid Process.

BACKGROUND: Eagle syndrome is a rare condition caused by elongation of the styloid process or ossification of the stylohyoid ligament. The symptomatology can be vague but may include dysphagia, odynophagia, otalgia, foreign body sensation, facial pain, trismus, headache, tinnitus, increased salivation, and/or voice changes. CASE REPORT: We present the case of a 58-year-old male believed to have acquired Eagle syndrome secondary to osteoradionecrosis of the styloid process following radiation therapy used as adjuvant treatment for a surgically resected pT2N1M0 squamous cell carcinoma of the ri…

Bilateral mandibular fracture related to osteoradionecrosis.

Mandible is the most frequently affected bone during head and neck irradiation. Late changes in the mandible may manifest in the form of reduced bone density, dental caries, loss of spongiosa trabeculations, delayed healing following dental extraction, pathologic fractures, osteoradionecrosis, trismus, growth defects in children or second malignancies. Pathologic fractures of mandibular bone are rare and may be spontaneous or traumatic (following dental extraction). We report the case of a 55-year lady, who had undergone surgery and adjuvant radiotherapy for carcinoma oral tongue T2N0M0 on a c…

Parotid fistula--an extra-orally draining infected dentigerous cyst associated with a supernumerary fourth molar in ascending ramus.

UNLABELLED: An infected cyst, associated with a supernumerary fourth molar in the ascending ramus of the mandible, presented with parotid swelling, trismus and pain. It was managed as a parotid infection but recurred and a draining pre-auricular sinus developed, which was thought to be a parotid fistula. This was managed by cautery, followed by excision of the fistula, both of which were unsuccessful. Following this, further investigations revealed that the cause of the facial sinus was in fact a cyst associated with a mandibular fourth molar in the posterior ascending ramus. The tooth was ext…

Novel mouth-exercising device for oral submucous fibrosis.

Oral submucous fibrosis (OSMF) is a chronic inflammatory disease resulting in progressive juxtaepithelial fibrosis of the oral soft tissues and can cause increasing difficulty in mastication, swallowing, speaking, and mouth opening. The treatment of severe trismus requires a combination of surgical release and physiotherapy. Often physiotherapy alone can modify tissue remodeling in OSMF to increase oral opening. This article describes the fabrication and use of a new mouth-exercising device that helps the patient to squeeze/stretch the cheek mucosa to increase elasticity. The device can be use…

Occurrence of bruxism in a sample of Brazilian children with cerebral palsy.

Bruxism has been reported to exist in many children with cerebral palsy; however, only a few studies confirm this fact. The objective of this study was to determine the rate of bruxism in children with cerebral palsy and to relate its presence to the following factors: kind of cerebral palsy, gender, age, dentition, degree of malocclusion, oral mucous membrane trauma, trismus, and number of wear facets on specific teeth. The guardians of 121 children with cerebral palsy between the ages of 4 and 9 years were interviewed and the children were clinically examined. Bruxism was detected in 69.4% o…

The effect of protein intake levels on early postoperative outcomes following impacted mandibular third molar removal: a pilot study.

BACKGROUND: This study aimed to evaluate the effect of protein intake on early wound healing following the surgical removal of impacted mandibular third molars, and to explore its associations with postoperative outcomes such as trismus, edema, pain, and oral health-related quality of life. METHODS: Patients with asymptomatic impacted mandibular third molars classified as easy or medium difficulty according to the Pernambuco index were included. Dietary protein intake over the past month was assessed using a food frequency questionnaire and a 24-hour recall. Early wound healing was evaluated …

Pain, oedema, and trismus are the most frequently complications related in the surgical postoperative period. The literature has indicated PBM as a potential adjuvant method to reduce these complications. The aim of this review and meta-analysis is evaluate the PBM, as an optimal method to improve patient experience and minimize postoperative morbidity. Additionally, we seek to determine which wavelength, site, and frequency of application are most effective. METHODS:…
