Implementation of virtual reality (VR) in diagnostics and therapy of nonaffective psychoses.

Immersive virtual reality is a technology that allows the user to immerse in the virtual world in isolation from external stimuli. It enables the simulation of different social situations, often impossible to arrange in reality, with high control over the confounding variables. Thanks to the VR realism, the viewer of this reality behaves similarly and experiences similar emotions to those in natural conditions, which results in high ecological validity of this environment, making it useful for diagnostics and therapy. This review, conducted in a narrative way, presents the results of observati

Machine Learning Models Based on Molecular Fingerprints and an Extreme Gradient Boosting Method Lead to the Discovery of JAK2 Inhibitors.

Developing Janus kinase 2 (JAK2) inhibitors has become a significant focus for small-molecule drug discovery programs in recent years because the inhibition of JAK2 may be an effective approach for the treatment of myeloproliferative neoplasm. Here, based on three different types of fingerprints and Extreme Gradient Boosting (XGBoost) methods, we developed three groups of models in that each group contained a classification model and a regression model to accurately acquire highly potent JAK2 kinase inhibitors from the ZINC database. The three classification models resulted in Matthews correla

Identifying technology interaction opportunities within a gastroenterology exam room.

Gastric cancer is a serious disease that most people usually do not know they have until they start to get symptoms. Gastroenterology imaging is an essential tool for this battle, since an early diagnosis typically leads to a good prognosis. However, this is a rapidly evolving technological area with novel imaging devices such as capsule, narrow-band imaging or high-definition endoscopy. Adapting to these technologies has a high time-price cost, even for experienced clinicians, motivating the appearance of interactive environments that can accelerate these training processes. The GEMINI (Gastr

Measuring Co-Presence and Social Presence in Virtual Environments - Psychometric Construction of a German Scale for a Fear of Public Speaking Scenario.

Virtual reality exposure therapy (VRET) applications use high levels of fidelity in order to produce high levels of presence and thereby elicit an emotional response for the user (like fear for phobia treatment). State of research shows mixed results for the correlation between anxiety and presence in virtual reality exposure, with differing results depending on specific anxiety disorders. A positive correlation for anxiety and presence for social anxiety disorder is not proven up to now. One reason might be that plausibility of the simulation, namely including key triggers for social anxiety

Increase in physical activities in kindergarten children with cerebral palsy by employing MaKey-MaKey-based task systems.

In this study, we employed Flash- and Scratch-based multimedia by using a MaKey-MaKey-based task system to increase the motivation level of children with cerebral palsy to perform physical activities. MaKey MaKey is a circuit board that converts physical touch to a digital signal, which is interpreted by a computer as a keyboard message. In this study, we used conductive materials to control this interaction. This study followed single-case design using ABAB models in which A indicated the baseline and B indicated the intervention. The experiment period comprised 1 month and a half. The experi

Designing speech-based interfaces for telepresence robots for people with disabilities.

People with cognitive and/or motor impairments may benefit from using telepresence robots to engage in social activities. To date, these robots, their user interfaces, and their navigation behaviors have not been designed for operation by people with disabilities. We conducted an experiment in which participants (n=12) used a telepresence robot in a scavenger hunt task to determine how they would use speech to command the robot. Based upon the results, we present design guidelines for speech-based interfaces for telepresence robots.

Share and enjoy: anatomical models database--generating and sharing cardiovascular model data using web services.

Sharing data between scientists and with clinicians in cardiac research has been facilitated significantly by the use of web technologies. The potential of this technology has meant that information sharing has been routinely promoted through databases that have encouraged stakeholder participation in communities around these services. In this paper we discuss the Anatomical Model Database (AMDB) (Gianni et al. Functional imaging and modeling of the heart. Springer, Heidelberg, 2009; Gianni et al. Phil Trans Ser A Math Phys Eng Sci 368:3039-3056, 2010) which both facilitate a database-centric

A low-cost, computer-interfaced drawing pad for FMRI studies of dysgraphia and dyslexia.

We have developed a pen and writing tablet for use by subjects during fMRI scanning. The pen consists of two jacketed, multi-mode optical fibers routed to the tip of a hollowed-out ball-point pen. The pen has been further modified by addition of a plastic plate to maintain a perpendicular pen-tablet orientation. The tablet is simply a non-metallic frame holding a paper print of continuously varying color gradients. The optical fibers are routed out of the MRI bore to a light-tight box in an adjacent control room. Within the box, light from a high intensity LED is coupled into one of the fibers

A neuro-fuzzy warning system for combating cybersickness in the elderly caused by the virtual environment on a TFT-LCD.

Only a few studies in the literature have focused on the effects of age on virtual environment (VE) sickness susceptibility and even less research was carried out focusing on the elderly. In general, the elderly usually browse VEs on a thin film transistor liquid crystal display (TFT-LCD) at home or somewhere, not a head-mounted display (HMD). While the TFT-LCD is used to present VEs, this set-up does not physically enclose the user. Therefore, this study investigated the factors that contribute to cybersickness among the elderly when immersed into a VE on TFT-LCD, including exposure durations

Combined pitch and roll and cybersickness in a virtual environment.

BACKGROUND: Stationary subjects who perceive visually induced illusions of self-motion, or vection, in virtual reality (VR) often experience cybersickness, the symptoms of which are similar to those experienced during motion sickness. An experiment was conducted to test the effects of single and dual-axis rotation of a virtual environment on cybersickness. It was predicted that VR displays which induced illusory dual-axis (as opposed to single-axis) self-rotations in stationary subjects would generate more sensory conflict and subsequently more cybersickness. METHODS: There were 19 individual

[The design of intelligentized FES system on ERD/ERS signals].

Our objective is the designing of a functional electrical stimulation (FES) system on event related desynchronization (ERD) and event related synchronization (ERS) signals. When the brain images the left-and right-leg movements, the ERD/ERS signals will appear. By characterization and characteristic classification, the ERD/ERS will be translated into the response control signal for operating the FES system to electrically stimulate the legs of motor disability. The result shows that the experiment is successful in electrically stimulating the legs of motor disability.

PKDB: Polycystic Kidney Disease Mutation Database--a gene variant database for autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease.

Autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease (ADPKD) arises from mutations in the PKD1 and PKD2 genes. The Polycystic Kidney Disease Mutation Database (PKDB) is an internet-accessible relational database containing comprehensive information about germline and somatic disease-causing variants within these two genes, as well as polymorphisms and variants of indeterminate pathogenicity. The PKDB database structure incorporates an interface between these gene variant data and any associated patient clinical data. An initiative of the Polycystic Kidney Disease Foundation, PKDB is a publicly accessi

Improving mathematics teaching and learning experiences for hard of hearing students with wireless technology-enhanced classrooms.

Hard of hearing students usually face more difficulties at school than other students. A classroom environment with wireless technology was implemented to explore whether wireless technology could enhance mathematics learning and teaching activities for a hearing teacher and her 7 hard of hearing students in a Taiwan junior high school. Experiments showed that the highly interactive communication through the wireless network increased student participation in learning activities. Students demonstrated more responses to the teacher and fewer distraction behaviors. Fewer mistakes were made in in

Subjective sleepiness, simulated driving performance and blink duration: examining individual differences.

The present study aimed to provide subject-specific estimates of the relation between subjective sleepiness measured with the Karolinska Sleepiness Scale (KSS) and blink duration (BLINKD) and lane drifting calculated as the standard deviation of the lateral position (SDLAT) in a high-fidelity moving base driving simulator. Five male and five female shift workers were recruited to participate in a 2-h drive (08:00-10:00 hours) after a normal night sleep and after working a night shift. Subjective sleepiness was rated on the KSS in 5-min intervals during the drive, electro-occulogram (EOG) was m

Virtual reality treatment versus exposure in vivo: a comparative evaluation in acrophobia.

The aim of the present study was to evaluate the effectiveness of low-budget virtual reality (VR) exposure versus exposure in vivo in a between-group design in 33 patients suffering from acrophobia. The virtual environments used in treatment were exactly copied from the real environments used in the exposure in vivo program. VR exposure was found to be as effective as exposure in vivo on anxiety and avoidance as measured with the Acrophobia Questionnaire (AQ), the Attitude Towards Heights Questionnaire (ATHQ) and the Behavioral Avoidance Test (BAT). Results were maintained up to six months fol

A study of orientation in a zero gravity environment by means of virtual reality simulation.

When the International Space Station (ISS) is completed and starts its operation, crew members will be stationed for three months or more in orbit aboard the ISS. As they stay longer in the space environment, "habitability" for them will become most important in the design of the interior space. One of the problems about habitability in a zero gravity (0 G) environment is disorientation. Crew members have difficulty in discriminating between "up" and "down" and more serious disorientations may cause space motion sickness. Crew members rely on visual perception to orient themselves because they

Perceiving Weight in Augmented Reality Using a Wearable Device With Minimal Haptic Feedback.

While at first glance one might assume haptic devices for Virtual Reality (VR) would directly translate to use in Augmented Reality (AR), key differences in how users interact with these environments create distinct design constraints. AR allows users to see their surroundings and interact with both physical and virtual elements, requiring virtual objects to convey the same sense of weight as their physical counterparts. However, force feedback solutions developed for the more mature field of VR are not compatible with this blended environment as they occlude the user's hand and prevent intera

Studying the interaction between pedestrian, cyclist and automated vehicle in shared space: A virtual reality co-simulator study.

Shared spaces have attracted growing attention, where multiple vulnerable road users (VRUs) such as pedestrians and cyclists coexist in a harmonious traffic environment. In this study, we designed and implemented a multi-player, multi-modal Virtual Reality (VR) co-simulator that integrates pedestrians and cyclists within the same VR environment. The co-simulator features advanced functionalities, body tracking for pedestrians and cyclists, high-quality digital human representations, and comprehensive data collection technologies such as eye-tracking. A VR experiment was conducted to evaluate t

Beyond the Self: Avatar Anthropomorphic Fidelity and Calibration Effects on Judging Others' Interpersonal Horizontal Reachability in VR.

Effective collaboration in Virtual Reality depends on users' ability to accurately perceive the affordances of others within a shared space. This paper presents the first empirical investigation of how people judge others' reaching capabilities in Immersive Virtual Environments (IVEs). We examined whether observers can reliably estimate the maximum horizontal reach distance of virtual actors, how different actor representations influence these perceptual judgments, and whether calibration feedback can improve estimation accuracy. Participants (N=35) judged the reachability of objects for virtu
