Vaginal diseases are, in many cases, sexually transmitted. However, most can also be non-venereal and can occur in any age-group. Special care should be taken in examining and treating young females with vaginal disease, and the possibility of sexual abuse should be considered in this age-group. Finally, special attention should be paid to girls and women exposed to diethylstilbestrol in utero, as these patients have an increased risk of anatomic and reproductive anomalies.

BACKGROUND: Vaginal intraepithelial neoplasia (VAIN) is a rare HPV-related condition with heterogeneous behavior and a relevant recurrence risk. Factors associated with severity and recurrence remain incompletely defined.
OBJECTIVE: To explore clinical, cytological, virological, and colposcopic features associated with high-grade VAIN and recurrence.
METHODS: This retrospective study included 42 women with histologically confirmed VAIN at a tertiary center between January 2020 and January 2026. All underwent vaginal cytology, high-risk HPV (HR-HPV) genotyping, colposcopy, and biopsy. Histolo

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the effect of tamoxifen on cervicovaginal epithelium, identify tamoxifen-related changes that mimic cancer and detennine the morphologic features differentiating the 2 changes.
STUDY DESIGN: Cervicovaginal smears from 153 conventionally treated primary breast cancer patients presenting with gynecologic symptoms were studied.
RESULTS: All 153 patients presented with menorrhagia or irregular periods. Of 4 patients with a cytodiagnosis of atypical glandular changes, 2 had negative histology; 1 each had a uterine leiomyoma and endometrial hyperplasia. Of the 6 cases report

A survey was made of abnormalities found on pelvic examination of 2,656 women who attended for cervical smears in the three years 1967-9. Eight women had malignant cells in their smears, and 68 women pelvic tumours, four of them malignant. Severe vulvitis was common in women over 46. Many of the women who had non-malignant conditions were treated though they had no complaints. They were among the most appreciative and subsequently sought out the clinic staff to thank them. It is important that a full examination should be made by an experienced gynaecologist.

BACKGROUND: Variation in care is known to exist for those diagnosed with vaginal and vulvar cancers. Guidelines are integral to providing a consistent, quality standard of care. To provide an evidence-based background for vaginal and vulvar cancers, a systematic review was conducted to identify available guidelines relevant to prevention and early detection; presentation, initial investigations and referral; and diagnosis.
METHODS: We conducted a systematic search of databases (CINAHL, Cochrane Library, Embase, PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science) and targeted websites (n = 23) to identify guideli

Perivascular epithelioid cell tumors (PEComas) are rare mesenchymal tumors with immunohistochemical co-expression of melanocytic and myoid markers. Vaginal PEComas have been described in only nine cases so far. We describe the case of a 65-year-old female with a large growth in the left lateral vaginal wall. Biopsy imprint smears showed dispersed tumor cells with anisonucleosis, multinucleation, and bizarre forms, suggestive of a malignant tumor. Histopathology, however, showed perivascular arrangement of clear epithelioid cells, focal necrosis, intracellular brown pigment in few cells, and mi

BACKGROUND: Vaginal intraepithelial neoplasia (VaIN) is a rare disease of the lower genital tract, strongly associated with HPV infection, which may progress to vaginal carcinoma.
PURPOSE: The aim of this review is to summarise current treatment options, evaluate their efficacy and make provide recommendations on the optimal management of the disease.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A comprehensive search of the literature was performed using the PubMed database for articles referring to the treatment of VaIN. We restricted our search only in articles written in English with publication dates within

STUDY OBJECTIVE: To demonstrate the feasibility of laparoscopic upper colpectomy for the treatment of vaginal intraepithelial neoplasia (VAIN) after previous total hysterectomy.
DESIGN: Stepwise demonstration of the technique with narrated video footage.
SETTING: In 2014, our patient aged 60 years underwent a routine smear that reported severe dyskaryosis. This was treated with large loop excision of the transformation zone. Histopathology confirmed cervical intraepithelial neoplasia II, with positive ectocervical margins. The patient was counseled for both repeat large loop excision of the

BACKGROUND: Choriocarcinoma associated with cornual pregnancy is extremely rare. To our knowledge, only three other cases have been reported in the literature.
CASE: A 38-year-old woman was found to have a left cornual ectopic pregnancy on ultrasound after presenting with abdominal pain, irregular vaginal bleeding, and a positive pregnancy test. Laparoscopy confirmed the diagnosis and she underwent total abdominal hysterectomy. Three weeks later, she presented with vaginal bleeding. A solid ulcerating lesion was found arising from the vaginal wall and biopsy revealed metastatic gestational ch

Lower genital tract malignancy during pregnancy is rare. Due to the rarity of this condition, the best evidence in its management is based on case reports. The management of the lower genital tract malignancy is influenced by factors including oncological factors, maternal and foetal effect of treatment, and other religious and ethical issues in a multidisciplinary approach. In most cases, the woman can continue with the pregnancy. This chapter describes the management of vaginal and vulval cancer during pregnancy based on available case reports.

Gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GISTs) are rare tumors of the gastrointestinal (GI) tract that arise from primitive mesenchymal cells. Extragastrointestinal stromal tumors (EGISTs) are extremely rare tumors that show the features of GISTs outside the GI tract. Their most common locations are the omentum, mesentery, and retroperitoneum. The authors report herein a case of a 54-year-old woman with GIST in rectovaginal septum. The patient underwent low anterior resection of the rectum, total abdominal hysterectomy, bilateral salpingo-oophorectomy, and partial resection of the posterior vagina. S

BACKGROUND: Reconstruction of vulvovaginal defects after tumor excision requires good-quality skin cover because of the cosmetic and functional importance of this region. Although numerous techniques for vulvovaginal reconstruction have been described, an ideal approach has yet to be widely accepted.
METHODS: Seven gluteal-fold flaps advanced in a V-Y fashion were used to cover vulvovaginal defects in five patients who underwent surgical treatment for extramammary Paget's disease or carcinoma of the vulva.
RESULTS: Each flap survived completely with no complication other than partial dehisce

Ovarian cancer spreads primarily by intraperitoneal implantation of exfoliated cancer cells, by lymphatic dissemination, and by haematogenous spread. Very rarely it metastasizes to cervix, vulva and vagina; this type of metastases present a diagnostic challenge to the gynecologist and pathologist. We present a case of ovarian cancer with initial clinical manifestation-lesion of the vagina.
