Computed Tomography- and Photoacoustic Imaging-Active Bioresorbable Electrospun Bismuth Nanoparticle-Infused Small-Diameter Vascular Grafts.

Bioresorbable small-diameter vascular grafts lack inherent radiopacity, hindering noninvasive longitudinal monitoring of device integrity and complications. Hence, this study introduces a bismuth nanoparticle (BiNP)-infused electrospun polycaprolactone (PCL) small-diameter graft (i.e., PCL-Bi) for multimodal imaging. Control (aortic autologous), PCL, and PCL-Bi were implanted as abdominal aortic grafts in Sprague-Dawley rats (n = 3 per group) and monitored over 12 weeks using computed tomography (CT), a standard technique for vascular monitoring, and ultrasound/photoacoustic (US/PA) imaging, a

Hemodialysis access techniques.

Progression in hemodialysis technology and vascular access techniques has led to many patients remaining on chronic hemodialysis for significantly greater periods of time. The surgically constructed arteriovenous fistula at the wrist, mid-forearm, or antecubital fossa presents the most ideal and long-term angioaccess. Adequate radial or brachial arterial flow is mandatory for success, and moderate to large sized patent superficial arm veins are even more critical for immediate and long-term patency. A properly selected and constructed fistula has primary patency rates often exceeding five and

Influence of digital artery patency on sensory recovery after unilateral digital neurovascular injury.

INTRODUCTION: Injuries to the proper palmar digital neurovascular bundles are common surgical emergencies in hand trauma. While nerve repair is known to improve sensory recovery, the benefit of associated digital artery repair remains debated when digital vascularization is preserved. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective comparative single-centre study including patients treated at a European Federation of Hand Emergency Centre for a unilateral injury of the proper palmar digital neurovascular bundle, with a minimum follow-up of 1 year. All patients underwent digital nerve repair with or wit

Successful Rescue of Massive Hemoptysis Caused by Vascular-Bronchial Fistula.

The case reported in this paper is a vascular-bronchial fistula associated with fatal massive hemoptysis. The patient was rescued successfully by experts from a multidisciplinary team. The bronchoscopy physician cleared the accumulated blood in the airway timely and maintained the airway patency, and the anesthesiologist established artificial ventilation quickly; eventually, the thoracic surgeon performed an emergency thoracotomy to control the bleeding. It reflected the significance of multidisciplinary collaborative treatment.

Vascular homografts as bypass grafts for superior vena cava syndrome due to idiopathic fibrosing mediastinitis.

Fibrosing mediastinitis can lead to superior vena cava obstruction by generating a fibroinflammatory mass in the mediastinum. Surgical caval reconstruction with conduits could be indicated for cases of unsuccessful or technically unfeasible endovascular stenting and angioplasty. The use of cryopreserved vascular homografts seems to be better than prosthetic conduits for mid- and long-term patency, as was observed in the case we have described in the present report.

Contrast Intravasation During Hysterosalpingography.

Hysterosalpingography is an imaging method to evaluate the endometrial and uterine morphology and fallopian tube patency. Contrast intravasation implies backflow of injected contrast into the adjoining vessels mostly the veins and may be related to factors altering endometrial vascularity and permeability. Radiologists and gynaecologists should be well acquainted with the technique of hysterosalpingography, its interpretation, and intravasation of contrast agents for safer procedure and to minimize the associated complications.

Aortic atresia combined with right aortic arch.

We present a case of an aortic atresia and a persistent right aortic arch with a retro-aortic brachiocephalic vein. A left neo-aortic arch was constructed using a reversed subclavian flap and a standard Norwood-type patch enlargement to provide systemic outflow. The intercarotid section of the aortic arch was hypoplastic. Therefore, we maintained the patency of the right arch, thus creating a vascular ring.

Endoscopic vein harvest is associated with worse but improving outcomes in infrainguinal bypass.

OBJECTIVE: The impact of great saphenous vein harvest technique on infrainguinal bypass outcomes remains a matter of debate, with no robust evidence favoring a specific technique over the other. This study aims to compare the outcomes of open vein harvest (OVH) with endoscopic vein harvest (EVH) in patients undergoing infrainguinal bypass surgery. METHODS: Patients who underwent an infrainguinal bypass from a femoral origin using a single-segment great saphenous vein between 2011 and 2023 were identified in the Vascular Quality Initiative infrainguinal bypass module. Only patients undergoing

Directional atherectomy with anti-restenotic therapy versus open repair in patients with restenotic disease after surgical revascularization of the common femoral artery.

BACKGROUND: This study evaluated the performance of directional atherectomy with anti-restenotic therapy (DAART) compared to surgery in patients with restenosis of the groin arteries after endarterectomy or femoral bypass anastomosis. METHODS: Consecutive patients with restenotic lesions from two vascular surgery units were retrospectively evaluated. Detailed medical history, type of previous reconstruction, anatomical and perioperative data, 30-day mortality and morbidity as well as data during follow-up were documented. The primary outcome measure was primary patency, whereas technical succ

Fresh Cold-Stored Vascular Allografts in Subgenicular Location: Our Experience with Rescue Endovascular Techniques.

BACKGROUND: Critical limb ischemia (CLI) is considered the most severe pattern of peripheral artery disease. CLI is associated with high rates of morbidity and mortality with high risk of limb amputation. In the absence of appropriate autologous grafts, unsuitability of prosthetic bypasses, and endovascular methods, fresh cold-stored venous allografts is an option. Endovascular interventional methods are essential methods for maintaining primary and secondary patency. METHODS: A single-centre retrospective analysis of 82 surgical revascularizations using allogeneic vascular grafts and rescue

Long-Term Outcomes of Fistula First Initiative in an Urban University Hospital-Is It Still Relevant?

PURPOSE: Dialysis access failure is a major cause of morbidity in patients with end-stage renal disease. The Fistula First Breakthrough Initiative (FFBI) dictates arteriovenous fistulae (AVFs) should be preferred over arteriovenous grafts (AVGs) as first line for surgically placed accesses. The purpose of this study was to compare patency rates of surgical dialysis accesses in our mature, urban population after the FFBI. METHODS: Current dialysis patients with accesses placed between 2006 and 2011 were included. Patient characteristics, access outcomes, interventions, and survival outcomes we

Arteriovenous fistula outcomes in Malaysia: A systematic review and meta-analysis of maturation, failure and patency rates.

Arteriovenous fistulas (AVFs) remain the preferred vascular access for haemodialysis globally. Malaysia has a rapidly rising burden of end-stage renal disease (ESRD), but reported AVF outcomes vary across institutions, and no national synthesis has previously been performed. This review aimed to evaluate AVF outcomes in Malaysia, consolidate available evidence, and provide baseline reference values to guide future access planning and research. A systematic search of PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, Google Scholar and Malaysian databases was conducted from inception to June 2025. Eligible studie

Hybrid Revascularization for Extensive Iliofemoral Occlusive Disease.

BACKGROUND: Total occlusion of the iliac-femoral tract can cause a variety of life-limiting symptoms ranging from mild claudication to chronic limb-threatening ischemia. Efforts should be made to revascularize the symptomatic ischemic limb. Currently there are different options in the vascular surgeon's armamentarium to achieve this. The aim of the study was to verify the feasibility and outcomes of inflow hybrid revascularizations combining femoral endarterectomy and recanalization of iliac atherosclerotic occlusion. METHODS: A retrospective review was conducted of all hybrid revascularizati

In the Current Era of Endovascular Surgery, What is the Role of Axillofemoral Bypass?

INTRODUCTION: Nowadays, axillofemoral bypass is viewed as an end-of-line solution for lower limb revascularization, owing to its classically described poor long-term patency, and recent advances in endovascular options for patients with complex aortoiliac anatomy not suitable for open reconstruction. There is a marked difference in patient profiles in published series of axillofemoral bypass, reflecting changing procedures indications due to technical innovations. The objective of this study is to determine the contemporary profile of patients treated with axillofemoral bypass and their outcom
