As case report we describe a rare cause of intractable "gastroenteritis" detected by ultrasonography. The 14 months-old boy was admitted to hospital because of intensive dehydration due to massive vomiting and diarrhoea. A salmonella enteritis with intractable hyponatraemia and hypokalaemia was thought to be the cause. After a dramatic relapse during oral treatment measures, further extensive laboratory tests finally disclosed an elevated serum level of vasoactive intestinal polypeptide ("VIP"). The existence and distribution of vasoactive intestinal polypeptide (VIP), and Met-enkephalin pentapeptide were investigated by means of the peroxidase-antiperoxidase (PAP) technique in rabbit submandibular and sublingual glands. In the submandibular gland, VIP immunostaining was observed in some peripheral acinar cells, while in sublingual one VIP positive fibres surrounded semilunes. Ductal cells of both glands were also reactive. These findings suggested a role of VIP in regulating volume and composition of salivary secretion.

The concentrations of substance P (SP) and vasoactive intestinal polypeptide (VIP) were determined in plasma in normal volunteers during acute occlusive ischaemia (n=5) and in patients with chronic ischaemia (n=5) due to obliterative arterial disease in the lower limbs. Immunoreactivity to VIP by endocrine-like cells in the feline pyloric mucosa was examined by using three kinds of region-specific anti-porcine VIP sera. VIP-immunoreactive endocrine-like cells were detected clearly with all of the VIP antisera used. They were located mainly around the neck of the pyloric glands. VIPoma is a rare pancreatic neuroendocrine tumor characterized by the overproduction of vasoactive intestinal peptide (VIP), typically manifesting as watery diarrhea, hypokalaemia and metabolic acidosis.
