Mast cells play pivotal roles in innate host defenses against venom. Activated mast cells release large amounts of prostaglandin D2 (PGD2). However, the role of PGD2 in such host defense remains unclear. We found that c-kit-dependent and c-kit-independent mast cell-specific hematopoietic prostaglandin D synthase (H-pgds) deficiency significantly exacerbated honey bee venom (BV)-induced hypothermia and increased mortality rates in mice. BV absorption via postcapillary venules in the skin was accelerated upon endothelial barrier disruption resulting in increased plasma venom concentrations. Thes…

Capillary malformations (CMs) are the most common vascular anomalies, composed of enlarged capillaries and venules with thickened perivascular cell coverage in skin and mucous membranes. These congenital anomalies represent an error in vascular development during embryogenesis. Most of the CMs occur without any syndromic findings; the association between CMs systemic anomalies in some patients, however, makes the recognition of additional syndrome features critical. Some genetic disorders discussed, which feature CMs, include Sturge-Weber syndrome, diffuse CMs with overgrowth, Klippel-Trenauna…

Leukocytoclastic vasculitis (LCV), also known as hypersensitivity vasculitis is a small vessel inflammatory disease which mainly involves the postcapillary venules. A 17-year-old girl developed palpable purpura over lower limbs and acute allergic interstitial nephritis 5 days after exposure to ceftriaxone. Skin biopsy from the lesion over lower limbs confirmed the diagnosis of LCV. Discontinuation of drug and treatment with steroid resulted in resolution of skin lesions and normalization of kidney functions. Beta-lactams are commonly used antibiotics in various types of infection in day-to-day…

Under normal and pathological conditions, lymphocyte migration into the gastrointestinal mucosa to form gut-associated lymphoid tissue is mediated by the L-selectin ligand peripheral lymph node addressin and the integrin α4β7 ligand mucosal addressin cell adhesion molecule 1 (MAdCAM-1) expressed on high endothelial venules (HEVs) and HEV-like vessels. In this review, we discuss these two distinct lymphocyte homing systems involved in the pathogenesis of chronic inflammatory gastrointestinal diseases with reference to our and others' previously published works. We also describe a recently devel…

Polyarteritis nodosa is a necrotizing vasculitis of small and medium-sized arteries that spares the smallest blood vessels (arterioles, venules, and capillaries). Antiphospholipid syndrome is an autoimmune disorder characterized by venous or arterial thrombosis and/or by fetal losses, associated with antiphospholipid antibodies. The association of both diseases is infrequent. This case report discusses a male patient with a diagnosis of polyarteritis nodosa who, after 7 years of being diagnosed with vasculitis, showed ischemic lesions in his legs associated with high titers of anticardiolipin …

We report on a German couple found dead at home 7 days after returning from Burkina Faso. Postmortem evaluation revealed Plasmodium falciparum infection with a parasitemia of approximately 80% in both cases. No pathological findings of the organs were present at autopsy except moderate splenomegaly in both cases and myocarditis in one case. Typical findings of fatal malaria like petechial hemorrhages of the brain or other organs, or sequestration of parasitized erythrocytes in venules and capillaries were absent. Lack of sequestration with excessive hyperparasitemia leading to systemic hypoxem…

We report on a 16-year old patient with a neuropathic bladder secondary to Behçet's disease, which is an uncommon vasculitis usually involving venules. The genitourinary manifestations of this disease are discussed, a neuropathic bladder being a rare complication of the involvement of the nervous system. Urodynamic assessment is important when voiding dysfunction is present; three patients previously reported revealed a bladder function changing from normal detrusor to overactivity. Our patient showed early and severe involvement of the nervous system, and detrusor areflexia two years after th…

Five cases of giant inflammatory polyps associated with idiopathic inflammatory bowel disease are reported. Polyps produced intestinal obstruction in three cases; consequently, surgery was performed. In a further two cases, intestinal bleeding was improved by endoscopic polypectomy. Electron microscopy showed fibroblasts, myofibroblasts, mast cells, lymphocytes, collagen fibers, capillaries, and venules. Remnants of the original mucosal epithelial cells, smooth muscle cells, and hypertrophic autonomous nerve plexuses were noted. Nerve fibers were interwoven with the matrix of the polyps. Mast …

Flat preparations of the retina were prepared by trypsin digestion in ten cases of Coats' disease. All of the patients were young males with advanced disease leading to enucleation. All eyes showed marked abnormalities in the arterioles, venules, and capillaries. The findings most characteristic of Coats' disease were large aneurysms and thick PAS positive deposits in vessel walls. The aneurysms ranged from 50 to 350 microns and frequently formed large sausage-like or beaded out-pouchings and were sometimes situated on shunt vessels. Other findings frequently seen, but not specific for Coats' …

BACKGROUND: Current knowledge of the anatomy of the lymphatic system does not match or explain some of the unexpected clinical and lymphoscintigraphic findings seen in head and neck cancer patients. There is the need, therefore, to remap the lymphatic network of the superficial tissues of the head and neck region.
METHODS: Eighteen halves of the superficial tissues of the head and neck from nine fresh human cadavers were studied over a 20-month period using a mixture of 6% hydrogen peroxide (Orion Laboratories, Balcatta, Australia) with and without India ink to detect the lymphatic vessels an

ANCA (anti-neutrophil cytoplasm antibody)-associated small vessel vasculitis is an inflammatory condition associated with the production of autoantibodies to neutrophil cytoplasmic components. The disorder results in destruction of the microvasculature, infiltration of neutrophils into tissues, which is followed later by mononuclear cells, leading to injury and the formation of granulomatous lesions. Initiators for the disease are undetermined but a pro-inflammatory environment is required. Other influencing factors may include environmental triggers, genetic propensity or infectious agents. T

Vascular adrenergic reactivity was studied in 100 healthy persons and 222 elderly patients with stage II essential hypertension at high risk of complications. With age, the rate of orthostatic hypotension rises. This hypotension in the elderly hypertensive patients is caused by reduced adrenergic reactivity of venous microvessels.

Vessels in cartilage canals supplying the articular-epiphyseal cartilage complex and growth plate of the distal part of the humerus of pigs between on day and 15 weeks old were examined in perfused and cleared specimens, and histochemical preparations. An extensive capillary network surrounded the arterioles and venules and probably maintained the circulation of blood as the ends of the cartilage canals underwent involution. Pits and grooves were in predilection sites for osteochondrosis and osteoarthrosis and were typical of early lesions of these conditions. Some ghosts that were observed me…

Partial nodular transformation of the liver (PNT) is a rare condition of unknown pathogenesis in which nodules composed of hepatocytes replace portions of the parenchyma. There is usually evidence of portal hypertension and portal vein thrombosis. We present a case of PNT in a man with persistent ductus venosus and hypoplasia of the major intrahepatic portal veins but without evidence of portal hypertension or portal vein thrombosis. Portal venules were largely absent between nodules, as documented by morphometry. We suggest the pathogenesis of PNT is similar to that previously proposed for no…

Past research into the pathogenesis of RA has generally concerned itself with established inflammation. The present review summarizes alterations in microvascular anatomy and function which occur during the hypoxic state, in various experimental and disease conditions. It further shows that tissue hypoxia is a common finding in RA and that the microvascular alterations of RA are similar to those produced by experimental hypoxia. The available data suggest that microcirculatory compromise, concomitant with an increase in metabolic needs of synovial tissue, may initiate tissue injury via anoxia

Increased vascular permeability of synovium induced by experimental haemarthrosis was studied in the stifle joint of the rat. Abnormal permeability was detected by injecting animals intravenously with colloidal carbon and examining the synovial vessels for intramural deposits of carbon. Both fresh and heparinized whole blood injected into the joint induced a marked permeability response of synovial venules which persisted for 18 hours. Platelets suspended in heparinized Tyrode solution induced a similar response, but one lasting only 12 hours. The permeability effects of suspensions of leucocy…

The data of previous investigations on general principles of microarchitectonics of the human intraorganic gastric vessels have been checked. Peculiarities of branching and course of the stomach intraorganic vessels, arterio-venous anastomoses, twisted arterioles, sinusoid venules and veins confirm activity and variability of the organ's circulation at microcirculatory level. Certain slight differences in diameters and number of microvessels have been revealed in some anatomical parts of the serous membrane and submucous layer of the stomach. Maximal differences in vessel diameters of the micr…

A 64-year-old Chinese man visited our clinic's health-screening center. The patient tested negative for Helicobacter pylori (HP) infection in his home country, but at this visit, anti-HP antibodies of 5 U/mL and a urea breath test (UBT) result of 48.6‰ were detected. Upper gastrointestinal endoscopy showed no atrophic gastritis, and a regular arrangement of collecting venules was observed. Since a false-positive UBT was also considered, Smart Gene testing was performed, which confirmed the HP positivity. As no clarithromycin resistance mutation was detected, Japan's first-line eradication regi…

Antidepressants like sertraline are frequently used to treat psychiatric diseases like depression, panic disorder, and obsessive-compulsive disorder. Small-vessel vasculitis called leukocytoclastic vasculitis is defined histopathologically by immune complex-mediated vasculitis of the dermal capillaries and venules. Typically, it shows up as purpura on the lower extremities, either with or without systemic involvement. Leukocytoclastic vasculitis can be idiopathic but it can also happen in conjunction with several medications. Here, we present data on sertraline-induced leukocytoclastic vasculi…
