This study aimed to analyze the frequency of efficient and inefficient behavior in members of a group of ostomy patients due to bowel cancer. An exploratory and observational field study took place at a public service hospital in São Paulo, Brazil. The population consisted of 5 persons who joined in a group. We report the diagnostic evaluation of an elderly woman admitted with recurrent syncopes induced by head rotation. A cardiac origin was exclude by Holter ECG, echocardiography and carotid sinus compression. Angiography showed unilateral vertebral artery hypoplasia, suggesting the possibility of hemodynamic vertebrobasilar insufficiency. We videotaped the eye movements of syncope in 25 healthy volunteers who induced fainting by hyperventilation and Valsalva maneuver on a tilt table. In an additional three subjects, syncope was similarly induced during horizontal sinusoidal oscillation on a rotating chair while eye movements were recorded by electro-oculogram. The role of subthalamic nucleus (STN) deep brain stimulation (DBS) is well established in Parkinson's disease, but experience with STN DBS in other movement disorders is limited. We report on a patient with medically refractory cervical dystonia and essential tremor resulting in dystonic head tremor and action tremor of the hands who obtained complete tremor suppression and near resolution of her cervical dystonia with bilateral STN stimulation. The results in this case demonstrate that STN DBS can dramatically improve dystonia and tremor in nonparkinsonian movement disorders.

In hemiplegics, anosognosia (unawareness of deficit) rests on a mismatch between expected and actual movement: a feedback hypothesis emphasizes sensory deficits or neglect, a feedforward hypothesis postulates impaired intention to move. Anosognosia for other problems is less studied. The authors report a man without sensory deficits who was unaware of choreiform movements, except on videotape delay. The authors believe that a feed-forward mechanism underlies his "on-line" unawareness.

Fear of dental procedures deters many individuals with mental retardation from accepting dental treatment. This study was conducted to assess the effectiveness of two procedures, in vivo desensitization and video modeling, for increasing compliance with dental procedures in participants with severe or profound mental retardation. Desensitization increased compliance for all 5 participants, whereas video modeling increased compliance for only 1 of 3 participants.
