The phacomatoses are disorders characterized by multiple hamartomas of the central and peripheral nervous system, eye, skin, and viscera. Many of these diseases have well-defined Mendelian patterns of inheritance because of a mutation of a single gene. By recording the evoked potentials in the cortex and thalamic nuclei, afferent reactions of gastroduodenal components were studied early after acute gastroduodenal lesion in acute feline experiments. A model of acute ulcer in various gastric portions and the duodenal bulb gave rise to inhibition of their afferentation. This phenomenon was most pronounced in pyloric ulcer. It is concluded that the inhibition of the afferent reactions of gastroduodenal components in early periods after their acute lesion is a specific protective reaction of the viscera and appears mainly at the intraorgan level.

We studied the relationship between the sidedness of visceral organs and the expression of limb abnormalities in the legless mutant. The control of asymmetry in visceral development appears to be random in the legless mutant; that is, 50% develop normally (situs solitus) and 50% develop with inverted viscera (situs inversus). Radiological methods exist for generating tissue-specific images of bone, vessels, lymphatics, abdominal viscera, and the central nervous system, but there has been no reliable means to generate a clinical image of a nerve. We present the first "image neurogram" and report a method for producing such images by use of commercial magnetic resonance imaging systems. The image depicts a human nerve in situ in relation with a nerve graft, wherein the nerve is rendered in isolation much like a vessel appears in isolation in a subtraction angiogram.

The epizootiological status of mink (Mustela vison) as definitive hosts and Apodemus speciosus as intermediate hosts in the transmission of Echinococcus multilocularis in Hokkaido, Japan, were evaluated by orally inoculating mink with protoscoleces, and A. speciosus with eggs of the cestode, respectively. A case of a chronic alcoholic, found dead in the afternoon after consuming an intoxicant early in the morning and showing post-mortem skin slippage with a blackened charred-like appearance, is reported. Viscera chemical analysis gave a positive test for significant quantities of cyanide. However, on histopathological examination, since no evidence of blister formation or vital reaction in the skin tissues were found, this was thought to be a very short duration, accelerated postmortem change phenomenon, due to local heating from contact with the sun-baked terrace.

Fibrin glue (FG) is an effective hemostatic agent applied topically to the spleen. In this study, FG was found to be an effective hemostatic agent when applied topically in standardized wounds of the canine liver, spleen, and pancreas. It was markedly more effective, however, when injected intraparenchymally. In a case of severe blunt trauma in a patient with acute alcoholic hepatitis, intraparenchymal FG was lifesaving. Fibrin glue is a useful adjunct in the management of trauma to all the abdominal solid viscera. Intraparenchymal injection is the preferred mode of FG application.

An Algerien patient aged 31 years with a histologically confirmed mediastinopulmonary sarcoidosis had a persistent stable miliary pulmonary x-ray image after cortisone therapy. Eighteen months after stopping the corticotherapy, he developed cryptococcosis which was mainly cutaneous, but associated with subcutaneous abscesses and peripheral adenopathy, and without lesions in the viscera or deep nodes. Cryptococcus antigens were present in the serum and there was a humoral and cellular immunity reaction towards the cryptococcus. Recovery occurred after amphotericin B and 5-fluorocytosine.

The entomopathogenic fungus, Beauveria bassiana, was isolated from pulmonary lesions of a dead American alligator (Alligator mississipiensis) at the Oklahoma City Zoo. Colonies of the fungus, which had sporulated in vivo, were found in the thoracic air spaces. Septate, branching hyphae and fungal spores were seen in stained histologic sections of pleura and lung. Dissemination to other viscera had not occurred. This case indicated that B bassiana, a rare vertebrate pathogen, may be a fatal mycotic agent in captive reptiles.

In order to study the effect of the sediments on Hg accumulation in fish in the water-level-fluctuation zone of the Three Gorges Reservoir, we conducted a 90-days simulated flooding experiment by using the sediments with different concentrations of Hg.
