Navigational outcomes with a depth-based vision processing algorithm in a second-generation suprachoroidal retinal prosthesis.

Objective. To evaluate the effectiveness of a novel depth-based vision processing (VP) method, local background enclosure (LBE), in comparison to the comprehensive VP method, Lanczos2 (L2), in suprachoroidal retinal prosthesis implant recipients during navigational tasks in laboratory and real-world settings.Approach.Four participants were acclimatized to both VP methods. Participants were asked to detect and navigate past five of eight possible obstacles in a white corridor across 20-30 trials. Randomized obstacles included black or white mannequins, black or white overhanging boxes, black or

A Highly-Scalable Poisson-Coded Retinal Optogenetic Stimulator With Fully-Analog ED-Based Adaptive Spike Detection and Closed-Loop Calibration.

We present a fully implantable, inductively powered optogenetic stimulator that enhances stimulation efficacy and pathway specificity while maximizing energy efficiency and channel-count scalability. By leveraging opsins' photon integration properties with raster scanning and Poisson-coded stimulation, we achieve a uniform power profile and reduce wiring complexity, enabling a scalable system that supports more stimulation channels without compromising safety or functionality, improving prosthetic vision resolution. We also employed a compact and power-efficient (0.026 and 1.02 W overhead) SNR

Analysis of Wavefront Data Obtained With a Pyramidal Sensor in Pseudophakic Eyes Implanted With Diffractive Intraocular Lenses.

PURPOSE: To investigate the clinical validity of using wavefront measurements obtained with a recently available pyramidal aberrometer to assess the optical quality of eyes implanted with diffractive intraocular lenses (IOLs). METHODS: Individual biometric data were used to create models of pseudophakic eyes implanted with two diffractive IOLs. Their synthetic wavefronts were calculated by ray-tracing with near infrared wavelength (0.85 μm). Comparisons of the through-focus visual acuity of 12 pseudophakic eyes were obtained with three different methods: clinical defocus curves; simulated def

Sequential epiretinal stimulation improves discrimination in simple shape discrimination tasks only.

Objective. Electrical stimulation of the retina can elicit flashes of light called phosphenes, which can be used to restore rudimentary vision for people with blindness. Functional sight requires stimulation of multiple electrodes to create patterned vision, but phosphenes tend to merge together in an uninterpretable way. Sequentially stimulating electrodes in human visual cortex has recently demonstrated that shapes could be 'drawn' with better perceptual resolution relative to simultaneous stimulation. The goal of this study was to evaluate if sequential stimulation would also form clearer s

Successful Management of Corneal Hydrops and Intrastromal Corneal Ring Segment (ICRS) Migration Following ICRS Implantation for Keratoconus.

BACKGROUND Acute corneal hydrops refers to a rare complication of keratoconus and other ectatic disorders with potentially sight-threatening sequelae. Intrastromal corneal ring segment (ICRS) implantation is a surgical procedure performed as therapy for keratoconus when there is contact lens intolerance. ICRS migration along the tunnel made for its insertion is one of its most frequent complications. We believe this is the first published case of acute corneal hydrops and ICRS migration unfolding shortly after an uneventful ICRS implantation, and successfully managed with medical treatment and

Measures of visual disturbance in patients receiving extended depth-of-focus or trifocal intraocular lenses.

The degree of visual disturbance associated with a particular model of intraocular lens (IOL) depends on several factors, including IOL optic, material, and mechanics. Characterization of visual disturbance profiles is paramount for informing clinical IOL selection. Although many studies evaluating presbyopia-correcting IOLs include subjective assessment of visual symptoms, the types of patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs) used to capture these outcomes are inconsistent across studies, complicating data contextualization. Furthermore, some tools produce more meaningful results than others

Potential benefits of modified corneal tissue grafts for keratoconus: Bowman layer 'inlay' and 'onlay' transplantation, and allogenic tissue ring segments.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Keratoconus can be surgically challenging, especially in advanced cases. Classic corneal transplantation techniques, may often be associated with complications. New alternative procedures like isolated Bowman layer transplantation (as a corneal stromal inlay or as a corneal onlay) and corneal allogenic intrastromal ring segments (CAIRS) have recently shown promising results. The aim of this review is to describe the main new surgical developments for treating keratoconus. RECENT FINDINGS: Intrastromal Bowman layer transplantation has recently shown to be effective in haltin

High-Power Prismatic Devices for Oblique Peripheral Prisms.

PURPOSE: Horizontal peripheral prisms for hemianopia provide field expansion above and below the horizontal meridian; however, there is a vertical gap leaving the central area (important for driving) without expansion. In the oblique design, tilting the bases of both prism segments toward the horizontal meridian moves the field expansion area vertically and centrally (closing the central gap) while the prisms remain in the peripheral location. However, tilting the prisms results also in a reduction of the lateral field expansion. Higher prism powers are needed to counter this effect. METHODS:

Subjective complaints after cataract surgery: common causes and management strategies.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: To describe the common causes of, and management strategies for, nonrefractive subjective visual complaints after cataract surgery. RECENT FINDINGS: Over the past decade, clinical observations and ray-tracing models have greatly increased our understanding of positive and negative dysphotopsias after cataract surgery. The primary factor behind positive dysphotopsias is the use of high refractive index square-edge intraocular lenses (IOLs). Primary and secondary factors that underlie negative dysphotopsias are now better characterized, which has led to successful interventio
