DIFFERENCES IN REFRACTIVE OUTCOMES BETWEEN PHACOEMULSIFICATION FOR CATARACT ALONE AND COMBINED PHACOEMULSIFICATION AND VITRECTOMY FOR EPIRETINAL MEMBRANE.

PURPOSE: To determine whether preoperative adjustments are required for intraocular lens calculations in combined phacovitrectomy surgery. METHODS: A single-center, retrospective study of 50 eyes that underwent combined phacovitrectomy and a control group of 50 eyes after cataract surgery over a 3-year period by a single anterior segment surgeon and a single posterior segment surgeon. Main outcome measures were predicted refractive error (RE), as determined by SRK/T and Holladay 1 formulas, change compared with actual RE, surgically induced astigmatism, and the relationships between preoperat

Incidence and indications for pars plana vitrectomy following the treatment of posterior uveal melanomas in Scotland.

BACKGROUND: Globe-sparing treatments such as plaque brachytherapy, local or endoresection, and proton beam therapy (PBT) are the treatments of choice for posterior uveal melanoma. However, both early and late complications can arise from these techniques, including vitreous haemorrhage (VH) and retinal detachment (RD). Choroidal melanomas in Scotland are managed by a single unit, the Scottish Ocular Oncology Service (SOOS). METHODS: Indications and outcomes from surgery were analysed for patients undergoing vitrectomy following treatment for uveal melanoma in the SOOS between 1998 and 2013.

Management of postoperative inflammation after cataract and complex ocular surgeries: a systematic review and Delphi survey.

Prevention and management of postoperative ocular inflammation with corticosteroids and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) have been evaluated in several randomised controlled trials (RCTs). However, neither consensus regarding the efficacies of different regimens nor established guidelines are currently available. This has resulted in different practice patterns throughout the world. A systematic literature review found that for the management of postcataract inflammation nepafenac produced a positive outcome in three of three RCTs (3/3), as did ketorolac (1/1), bromfenac (7/7), l

Surgically-Induced Necrotizing Scleritis After Pars Plana Vitrectomy: A Case Report.

Surgically induced necrotizing scleritis (SINS) is a rare delayed hypersensitivity reaction following ocular surgeries, characterized by pain and redness at the surgical site. While commonly reported in various ocular surgeries, its occurrence after vitreoretinal procedures remains infrequent. We present a case of a 61-year-old diabetic male who developed progressive scleral melting and uveal exposure two months after an uneventful 23-gauge vitrectomy for retinal detachment. The infectious and immunologic profile was negative. Despite aggressive medical and surgical interventions, the patient

Retrospective review of 50 eyes with long-term silicone oil tamponade for more than 12 months.

BACKGROUND: Silicone oil (SO) is an established tamponade in treating complex vitreoretinal diseases. Although SO is intended to be removed after several weeks to months, permanent SO might be unavoidable in a small subgroup of patients with an extremely complicated clinical course. The aim of this study is to describe the long-term effects of intraocular SO tamponade. METHODS: This retrospective study included 50 patients with intraocular SO (Oxane 5700 Bausch & Lomb, Kingston-upon-Thames, UK) for at least 12 months. The most common reasons for long-term SO tamponade were: retinal re-detachm
