First acoustic evidence of signature whistle production by spinner dolphins (Stenella longirostris).

A dolphin's signature whistle (SW) is a distinctive acoustic signal, issued in a bout pattern of unique frequency modulation contours; it allows individuals belonging to a given group to recognize each other and, consequently, to maintain contact and cohesion. The current study is the first scientific evidence that spinner dolphins (Stenella longirostris) produce SWs. Acoustic data were recorded at a shallow rest bay called "Biboca", in Fernando de Noronha Archipelago, Brazil. In total, 1902 whistles were analyzed; 40% (753/1,902) of them were classified as stereotyped whistles (STW). Based on

Anterior forebrain pathway in parrots is necessary for producing learned vocalizations with individual signatures.

Parrots have enormous vocal imitation capacities and produce individually unique vocal signatures. Like songbirds, parrots have a nucleated neural song system with distinct anterior (AFP) and posterior forebrain pathways (PFP). To test if song systems of parrots and songbirds, which diverged over 50 million years ago, have a similar functional organization, we first established a neuroscience-compatible call-and-response behavioral paradigm to elicit learned contact calls in budgerigars (Melopsittacus undulatus). Using variational autoencoder-based machine learning methods, we show that contac

Singers show enhanced performance and neural representation of vocal imitation.

Humans have a remarkable capacity to finely control the muscles of the larynx, via distinct patterns of cortical topography and innervation that may underpin our sophisticated vocal capabilities compared with non-human primates. Here, we investigated the behavioural and neural correlates of laryngeal control, and their relationship to vocal expertise, using an imitation task that required adjustments of larynx musculature during speech. Highly trained human singers and non-singer control participants modulated voice pitch and vocal tract length (VTL) to mimic auditory speech targets, while und

Statistical learning of transition patterns in the songbird auditory forebrain.

Statistical learning of transition patterns between sounds-a striking capability of the auditory system-plays an essential role in animals' survival (e.g., detect deviant sounds that signal danger). However, the neural mechanisms underlying this capability are still not fully understood. We recorded extracellular multi-unit and single-unit activity in the auditory forebrain of awake male zebra finches while presenting rare repetitions of a single sound in a long sequence of sounds (canary and zebra finch song syllables) patterned in either an alternating or random order at different inter-stim

No evidence that maximum fundamental frequency reflects selection for signal diminution in bonobos.

Acoustic allometry consists of looking at how an organism's body size scales with the characteristics of its vocalizations. A typical finding based on this framework is that across mammals body size is reflected in the fundamental frequency (fo) of vocalizations, whereby lower fo indicates larger body size [1]. This relationship holds owing to the fact that vocal fold length generally scales with body size [2]. Cross-species comparisons allow for the identification of interesting outliers from the body size-f0 regression [3]. Such cases are of particular relevance as they can provide insight i

Formants provide honest acoustic cues to body size in American alligators.

In many vertebrates, acoustic cues to body size are encoded in resonance frequencies of the vocal tract ("formants"), rather than in the rate of tissue vibration in the sound source ("pitch"). Anatomical constraints on the vocal tract's size render formants honest cues to size in many bird and mammal species, but it is not clear whether this correlation evolved convergently in these two clades, or whether it is widespread among amniotes (mammals, birds, and non-avian reptiles). We investigated the potential for honest acoustic cues in the bellows of adult American alligators and found that for

The role of the pineal gland in the photoperiodic control of bird song frequency and repertoire in the house sparrow, Passer domesticus.

Temperate zone birds are highly seasonal in many aspects of their physiology. In mammals, but not in birds, the pineal gland is an important component regulating seasonal patterns of primary gonadal functions. Pineal melatonin in birds instead affects seasonal changes in brain song control structures, suggesting the pineal gland regulates seasonal song behavior. The present study tests the hypothesis that the pineal gland transduces photoperiodic information to the control of seasonal song behavior to synchronize this important behavior to the appropriate phenology. House sparrows, Passer dome

Immediate and long-term effects of testosterone on song plasticity and learning in juvenile song sparrows.

Steroid sex hormones play critical roles in the development of brain regions used for vocal learning. It has been suggested that puberty-induced increases in circulating testosterone (T) levels crystallize a bird's repertoire and inhibit future song learning. Previous studies show that early administration of T crystallizes song repertoires but have not addressed whether new songs can be learned after this premature crystallization. We brought 8 juvenile song sparrows (Melospiza melodia) into the laboratory in the late summer and implanted half of them with subcutaneous T pellets for a two wee

Can genetic differences explain vocal dialect variation in sperm whales, Physeter macrocephalus?

Sperm whale social groups can be assigned to vocal clans based on their production of codas, short stereotyped patterns of clicks. It is currently unclear whether genetic variation could account for these behavioural differences. We studied mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) variation among sympatric vocal clans in the Pacific Ocean, using sequences extracted from sloughed skin samples. We sampled 194 individuals from 30 social groups belonging to one of three vocal clans. As in previous studies of sperm whales, mtDNA control region diversity was low (π = 0.003), with just 14 haplotypes present in our

Echolocation by two foraging harbour porpoises (Phocoena phocoena).

Synchronized video and high-frequency audio recordings of two trained harbour porpoises searching for and capturing live fish were used to study swimming and echolocation behaviour. One animal repeated the tasks blindfolded. A splash generated by the fish being thrown into the pool or - in controls - by a boat hook indicated prey and stimulated search behaviour. The echolocation sequences were divided into search and approach phases. In the search phase the porpoises displayed a clear range-locking behaviour on landmarks, indicated by a distance-dependent decrease in click interval. Only in tr

Synthetic mucus for an ex vivo phonation setup: Creation, application, and effect on excised porcine larynges.

Laryngeal mucus hydrates and lubricates the deformable tissue of the vocal folds and acts as a boundary layer with the airflow from the lungs. However, the effects of the mucus' viscoelasticity on phonation remain widely unknown and mucus has not yet been established in experimental procedures of voice research. In this study, four synthetic mucus samples were created on the basis of xanthan with focus on physiological frequency-dependent viscoelastic properties, which cover viscosities and elasticities over 2 orders of magnitude. An established ex vivo experimental setup was expanded by a rep

Effects of False Vocal Folds on Intraglottal Velocity Fields.

Previous models have theorized that, during phonation, skewing of the glottal waveform (which is correlated with acoustic intensity) occurred because of inertance of the vocal tract. Later, we reported that skewing of the flow rate waveform can occur without the presence of a vocal tract in an excised canine larynx. We hypothesized that in the absence of a vocal tract, the skewing formed when dynamic pressures acted on the glottal wall during the closing phase; such pressures were greatly affected by formation of intraglottal vortices. In this study, we aim to identify how changes in false voc

Laryngeal and soft palate valving in the harbour seal (Phoca vitulina).

Effective 'valving' in the upper aerodigestive tract (UAT) is essential to temporarily separate the digestive and respiratory pathways. Marine mammals are largely dedicated to feeding underwater, and in many cases swallowing prey whole. In seals, little work has been done to explore the anatomy and function of the UAT in the context of valving mechanisms that function to separate food and air pathways. Here we use videofluoroscopy, gross dissection, histology and computed tomography (CT) renderings to explore the anatomy of the larynx and soft palate in the harbour seal (Phoca vitulina), and g

Effects of Varying Lengths and Diameters During Straw Phonation on an Excised Canine Model.

OBJECTIVE/BACKGROUND: Straw phonation, a well-established method of vocal exercise, started over 100 years ago. However, some of the most basic questions about best practices remain including the ideal extension length and the ideal restriction (semiocclusion) diameter. This study aims to help answer these questions by looking at both separately, with all other variables controlled. METHODS: Four (4) straws with lengths of 5, 25, 50, and 75 centimeters and 4 restrictions with diameters of 3, 9, 15, and 21 mm were tested, separately. They were attached to the end of a simulated vocal tract whi

Quantitative Evaluation of the In Vivo Vocal Fold Medial Surface Shape.

OBJECTIVES/HYPOTHESIS: Glottal insufficiency is a common clinical problem in otolaryngology and medialization laryngoplasty (ML) procedures remain the primary treatment modality. Although the goal of ML is to restore physiologic glottal posture and achieve optimal phonation, this posture has not been directly measured. In this study, we assessed glottal medial surface contour changes with selective activation of the intrinsic laryngeal muscles (ILMs). STUDY DESIGN: Basic science study using an in vivo canine hemilarynx model. METHODS: In an in vivo canine hemilarynx, India ink was used to ma

An open-source bio-logger for studying cetacean behavior and communication.

Over the past decade, bioacoustics associated with diverse marine life has become the focus of increasing research. While fixed acoustic devices play important roles in characterizing localized soundscapes, animal-worn devices that record audio alongside physiological metrics provide richer portals to understanding cetacean communication and characterizing sounds in their environment. To facilitate scaling the collection of such multimodal datasets for deep learning applications and to encourage rapid prototyping for new recording capabilities, we present an open-source non-invasive bio-logger

A novel silk-based vocal fold augmentation material: 6-month evaluation in a canine model.

OBJECTIVES: Ideal long-term vocal fold augmentation materials should be biocompatible, easily administered, allow tissue integration for long-term effect, and remain at the site of injection. A novel silk protein particle suspended in hyaluronic acid (Silk-HA) has been developed specifically for vocal fold augmentation to address this unmet need. This article presents the 6-month, preclinical findings of a canine vocal fold injection trial for Silk-HA. METHODS: Twelve beagle dogs were injected transorally in the lateral/deep aspect of their right thyroarytenoid muscles with 0.3 cc of Silk-HA
