INTRODUCTION: Young adults experiencing homelessness have poorer overall health compared with the general population. However, not much is known about how health care needs may change in the transition from homelessness to supportive housing. This study utilizes the Gelberg-Andersen Behavioral Model for Vulnerable Populations to examine unmet health care needs among young adults currently experiencing homelessness and formerly homeless young adults living in supportive housing.
METHODS: This study includes data from 192 young adults who were either residing in a supportive housing program (n=…

The COVID-19 pandemic caused by the infection with the novel Coronavirus SARS-CoV-2, revealed individual and global vulnerabilities, in which we highlight the social, economic, and political aspects and the health systems' organization in the countries. Brazil remains with a high transmission rate and presents a centripetal distribution as observed through a more sustained growth in the number of municipalities affected, outlining a profile of invasion of poor communities. Several vulnerabilities overlap with precarious housing conditions, lack of basic sanitation, malnutrition, and endemicity

The United Nations and WHO have summoned governments from low-income and middle-income countries to institute universal health coverage and thereby improve their population's healthcare access and outcomes. Until now, few countries responded favourably to this international plea. The HIV/AIDS epidemic, a major global public health challenge, resulted in over 11 million orphans in sub-Saharan Africa. Extended families have taken responsibility for more than 90% of these children. HIV orphans are likely to be poorer and less healthy. Burkitt lymphoma is the most common childhood cancer in sub-Sa

Overall, transportation is a well-documented barrier to engaging in chronic care among vulnerable populations. We sought to characterize the association between a forensic event (arrest or incarceration) with housing vulnerability and mental and physical health status over a four-year follow-up among a cohort of homeless and vulnerably housed individuals in Vancouver, Toronto and Ottawa. Data were obtained from the Health and Housing in Transition Study, a prospective cohort study of homeless and vulnerably housed individuals between 2009 and 2012. Participants were interviewed in-person at baseline (N = 1190) and at four annual follow-up time points. We used generalized estimating equations to charact

BACKGROUND: Over 90% of the organs transplanted in China before 2010 were procured from prisoners. Although Chinese officials announced in December 2014 that the country would completely cease using organs harvested from prisoners, no regulatory adjustments or changes in China's organ donation laws followed. As a result, the use of prisoner organs remains legal in China if consent is obtained.
DISCUSSION: We have collected and analysed available evidence on human rights violations in the organ procurement practice in China. We demonstrate that the practice not only violates international ethi

Crimes against the elderly have physical, psychological, and economic consequences. Approaches for mitigating them must be based on comprehensive knowledge of the phenomenon. This study analyses crimes against the elderly in Italy during the period 2007-2014 from an epidemiological viewpoint. Data on violent and non-violent crimes derived from the Italian Institute of Statistics were analysed in relation to trends, gender and age by linear regression, T-test, and calculation of the odds ratio with a 95% confidence interval. Results show that the elderly are at higher risk of being victimized i

Justice-involved HIV-positive women have poor health outcomes that constitute health inequities. Researchers have yet to embrace the range of qualitative methods to elucidate how psychosocial histories are connected to pathways of vulnerability to HIV and incarceration for this key population. We used life course narratives and intersubjectivity-predicated on interview dialogue-to investigate how familial and social settings established their social patterning of HIV, incarceration risk, and poor health. Working with two Alabama community-based organizations, we recruited and interviewed 24 HI

Rapid pace of unplanned urbanization in the developing countries has resulted in a large proportion of children becoming homeless, leading to multiple children living on the streets. These children are highly vulnerable to exploitation and abuse. Against this background, studies on the situational analysis of street children across India are needed; therefore, a study to assess the condition of street children in the city of Varanasi was planned. Street children registered with a nongovernmental organization were contacted. Four hundred and fifteen children were selected by random sampling, an

In this paper, we argue that a crossover class of climate change solutions (which we term "technological solutions") may disproportionately and adversely impact some populations over others. We begin by situating our discussion in the wider climate discourse, particularly with regard to the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) and the Basel Convention. We then suggest that many of the most attractive technological solutions to climate change, such as solar energy and electric car batteries, will likely add to the rapidly growing stream of electronic waste ("e-waste"). This e-waste may have nega

Certain subsets of the population are at a greater risk of acquiring foodborne infections and have a greater propensity to develop serious complications. Susceptibility to foodborne infection is dependent on numerous factors that largely relate to the status of an individual's defense systems in regard to both preventing and mitigating foodborne illness. Key examples include the increased susceptibility of pregnant women to listeriosis and increased severity of enteric bacterial infections in patients with AIDS. Clinicians must communicate with higher-risk patients about the risks of foodborne

The community health delivery system (CHDS) are vital agencies to the success of integration and the provision of services to improve the health and well-being of justice-involved women. Many agencies face barriers and challenges in providing services to vulnerable populations, such as justice-involved women, and, as a result, often offer individual rather than coordinator care. Thus, it is necessary to explore CHDS systemic barriers and challenges to identify opportunities for coordinated care. We conducted semi-structured interviews with 26 CHDS directors or designees to identify systemic ba…

Since the emergence of the COVID-19 pandemic, the Confederation has referred to « vulnerable populations » over the age of 65 and/or with co-morbidities as potentially at risk. This group should not overshadow other highly vulnerable populations such as forced migrants, people deprived of their liberty, and the homeless. In the context of the current pandemic, there is a risk of increasing inequities in care among these populations. In this practical article, we list the marginalized and disadvantaged left behind populations in the canton of Vaud and the issues of inequities in care in the con…

OBJECTIVE: To develop a municipal-level vulnerability index to COVID-19 transmission that integrates socioeconomic factors, urban infrastructure, mobility, and composite indicators of social vulnerability and leisure for Minas Gerais. This study found factors associated with the spatial distribution of COVID-19 and classified the 853 municipalities in the state by vulnerability levels.
METHODS: Data on COVID-19 cases from February 2022 were combined with nine variables in three domains: (i) socioeconomic factors (trade, service, construction, and manufacturing jobs); (ii) urban infrastructure

This article examines how vulnerability is enacted in specialized outpatient care for pregnant persons with diabetes in Denmark. The analysis draws on ten months of ethnographic fieldwork, including observations of 79 consultations with 33 pregnant persons and around 20 health professionals. Rather than treating vulnerability as a stable trait or individual circumstance, we approach it as something done through administrative classifications, psychiatric histories, insulin thresholds, anticipatory reasoning, and cross-sectoral coordination. We trace how institutional formats shape which concer

Low-income elderly consumers, often overlooked in studies of public financial assistance programs, may face challenges in managing resources to maintain dietary health. This study examines how the payment frequency of an unconditional cash transfer program impacts dietary behaviors among low-income elderly populations in Colombia. Using nationally representative data from a federal financial assistance program, we implement a Multivalued Treatment Model with Propensity Score Matching and Augmented Inverse Probability Weighting to assess the effects of monthly versus bi-monthly payments on food

Underserved communities in the United States continue to face substantial barriers to accessing eye care, leading to preventable vision loss. This review synthesizes United States-based teleophthalmology programs designed to expand eye care access among under-resourced populations, including older adults, Indigenous communities, children, veterans, people experiencing homelessness, and patients in safety-net systems. Most programs used asynchronous nonmydriatic fundus photography captured by trained technicians in community or primary care settings, with remote specialist interpretation and fr
