Environmental and household factors associated with depressive symptoms in rural Kilifi County, Kenya: a machine learning analysis.

BACKGROUND: Depression is a leading global cause of disability, that disproportionately affects populations in low-resource settings in sub-Saharan Africa, where poverty, limited healthcare, and environmental stressors such as climate variability, poor water and sanitation, and household air pollution compound vulnerability. In Kilifi County, Kenya, recurrent droughts and economic insecurity amplify these challenges, yet the associations between environmental exposures and mental health impacts remain poorly characterized. This study applies machine learning models to examine how climate perce

Implications of COVID-19 on global environmental pollution and carbon emissions with strategies for sustainability in the COVID-19 era.

The impacts of COVID-19 on global environmental pollution since its onset in December 2019 require special attention. The rapid spread of COVID-19 globally has led countries to lock down cities, restrict traffic travel and impose strict safety measures, all of which have implications on the environment. This review aims to systematically and comprehensively present and analyze the positive and negative impacts of COVID-19 on global environmental pollution and carbon emissions. It also aims to propose strategies to prolong the beneficial, while minimize the adverse environmental impacts of COVI

True exposure to lead at the tap: Insights from proportional sampling, regulated sampling and water use monitoring.

This work aimed to evaluate the ability of four regulatory sampling protocols to accurately determine weekly water lead levels (WLLs) of exposure at the kitchen tap in twenty-nine households with or without a lead service line (LSL). Proportional sampling was used as the gold standard to which the other protocols, 5-min flush, 30-min stagnation, 6-h stagnation and random daytime were compared. Random daytime samples provided mean WLLs closest to true exposure in the households monitored overall compared to other sampling protocols. Strikingly, mean WLLs after 5 min of flushing underestimated l

Recent developments in the biosorption of toxic pollutants from wastewater.

Due to rapid industrial growth, water pollution is worsening through the release of inorganic and organic pollutants, both soluble and insoluble, into water bodies. The rise of hazardous organic compounds and the high costs of various methods used to remediate industrial effluents containing dyes and metals are also of significant concern. Traditional wastewater treatment methods, including chemical precipitation, ion exchange, and membrane filtration, are often costly and can lead to secondary contamination. Biosorption is a novel, efficient, cost-effective, and sustainable method in which mi…

Electrospun nanofibers for the adsorption and separation of pollutants from wastewater: New opportunities and recent advances.

Due to the high concentration of various toxic and hazardous pollutants, industrial wastewaters have posed increasing threats. Water reclamation has recently received attention by using one-dimensional nanostructured materials such as electrospun nanofibrous membranes (ENMs). ENMs exhibit numerous advantageous properties, including a high surface area, substantial porosity, robust mechanical strength, and the ability to control surface morpHology. ENMs are promising candidates for efficient and environmentally sustainable water purification solutions. This review examines the recent advances i

Stormwater biofilter treatment model (MPiRe) for selected micro-pollutants.

Biofiltration systems, also known as bioretentions or rain-gardens, are widely used for treatment of stormwater. In order to design them well, it is important to improve models that can predict their performance. This paper presents a rare model that can simulate removal of a wide range of micro-pollutants from stormwater by biofilters. The model is based on (1) a bucket approach for water flow simulation, and (2) advection/dispersion transport equations for pollutant transport and fate. The latter includes chemical non-equilibrium two-site model of sorption, first-order decay, and volatilizat

The Ribble/Wyre observatory: major, minor and trace elements in rivers draining from rural headwaters to the heartlands of the NW England historic industrial base.

Information on a new observatory study of the water quality of two major river basins in northwestern England (the Ribble and Wyre) is presented. It covers upland, intermediate and lowland environments of contrasting pollution history with sufficient detail to examine transitional gradients. The upland rivers drain acidic soils subjected to long-term acidic deposition. Nonetheless, the acidic runoff from the soils is largely neutralised by high alkalinity groundwaters, although the rivers retain, perhaps as colloids, elements such as Al and Fe that are mobilised under acid conditions. The lowl

Rainfall-driven, high-resolution assessment of water acidification in a planned reservoir within an unreclaimed historical mining basin.

Acid mine drainage (AMD) from historical mining in the Iberian Pyrite Belt severely degrades water quality in southwest Spain. The planned Alcolea Reservoir, intended to supply water from the Odiel River basin in response to growing demands, is widely recognized as being critically constrained by AMD, as existing studies indicate that, without upstream remediation, its impoundment would lead to inevitable deterioration and acidification of water quality. In this sense, a high-resolution sampling campaign was conducted over a hydrological year in the Odiel and Oraque rivers to quantify pollutan

Water-specific toxicity factor and index for heavy metal risk assessment: application to urban lakes in Chennai, India.

Heavy metals released into aquatic environments disrupt ecological balance. Urban lakes in the Pallikaranai catchment, Chennai, India, face pollution pressures from rapid urbanization. This study introduces a water-specific toxicity factor and toxicity index to assess toxicity risks posed by heavy metals in surface waters to aquatic life. Results revealed considerable variability in in situ water quality parameters, including pH, electrical conductivity, and dissolved oxygen. pH was mostly neutral to alkaline, with some lakes experiencing anoxia while others exceeded 10 mg/L oxygen. Pb and Cu

Impact of air pollution on intestinal redox lipidome and microbiome.

Air pollution is a rising public health issue worldwide. Cumulative epidemiological and experimental studies have shown that exposure to air pollution such as particulate matter (PM) is linked with increased hospital admissions and all-cause mortality. While previous studies on air pollution mostly focused on the respiratory and cardiovascular effects, emerging evidence supports a significant impact of air pollution on the gastrointestinal (GI) system. The gut is exposed to PM as most of the inhaled particles are removed from the lungs to the GI tract via mucociliary clearance. Ingestion of co

Assessing microbial risks of Escherichia coli: A spatial and temporal study of virulence and resistance genes in surface water in resource-limited regions.

Environmental microbial pollution can potentially cause illnesses and deaths among human populations. Environmental factors such as geomorphology, land use, human activities, and seasonality could influence pathogen dissemination. This study performed a space-temporal analysis of Escherichia coli concentrations, virulence (eaeA, bfpA, stx2, aatA, and st), and resistance (tetA, blaTEM, blaOXA, Intl-1, Intl-2, sul-1, and sul-2) genes in surface water within the Virilla sub-watershed, Costa Rica. The research employs microbiological, geostatistical, and quantitative microbial risk assessment (QMR

Occurrence, distribution and ecological risk of ultraviolet absorbents in water and sediment from Lake Chaohu and its inflowing rivers, China.

The available information is insufficient to enable a reliable understanding of the global distribution and effect of organic ultraviolet absorbents (UVAs) on ecosystems. Little is known about the pollution of China's lakes by these chemicals. We conducted a survey of UVAs in water and sediment from Lake Chaohu and its inflowing rivers. The UVAs were widely present in this area and the concentrations of total 12 UVAs (Σ12 UVAs) ranged between 162 and 587 ng/L in water and 9.70-178 ng/g in sediment. Benzophenone and benzophenone-3 were dominant in water, and benzophenone and octocrylene dominat

Biocides used in building materials and their leaching behavior to sewer systems.

There is increasing concern about diffuse pollution of aquatic systems by biocides used in urban areas. We investigated sources and pathways of biocides significant for the pollution of storm water runoff. Main sources seem to be building envelopes, i.e. facades (paints, plasters) and roof sealing membranes. First results from a defined urban catchment drained by a separated sewer system without any agricultural activities reveal a substantial occurrence. Even after the first flush, concentrations of terbutryn, carbendazim, mecoprop as well as Irgarol 1051 and its metabolite exceeded the Swiss

Environmental impacts on soil and groundwater at airports: origin, contaminants of concern and environmental risks.

Environmental impacts of airports are similar to those of many industries, though their operations expand over a very large area. Most international impact assessment studies and environmental management programmes have been giving less focus on the impacts to soil and groundwater than desirable. This may be the result of the large attention given to air and noise pollution, relegating other environmental descriptors to a second role, even when the first are comparatively less relevant. One reason that contributes to such "biased" evaluation is the lack of systematic information about impacts

Ultrasound-enhanced advanced oxidation processes: mechanisms and applications for treating emerging organic contaminants in water.

Rapid industrialization worldwide has led to the accumulation of diverse environmental pollutants in water, air, and soil, posing significant threats to the earth's ecological balance and making environmental remediation an urgent priority. Among the various remediation techniques, ultrasound-assisted advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) have emerged as a promising approach, leveraging the unique effects of acoustic cavitation to enhance pollutant degradation in water. By generating reactive oxygen species (e.g., hydroxyl radicals) through bubble collapse and improving mass transfer, ultrasound

Water quality assessment of rivers in Mongolia.

A study was made on the water quality of the rivers in Mongolia over the years 1949-1990 for the three river basins in the country. In most of the 72 monitoring stations, the water quality is governed by geological and hydrological characteristics; bicarbonate and calcium are the most abundant major ions. No significant trends were observed between river discharges and total dissolved solids contents. The sediment yields (expressed in the run-off of total suspended solids, TSS) were always low, viz. between 0.02 and 20 x 10(3) kg TSS/km2 yr. In general, the rivers in Mongolia showed low pollut

Assessment, formation mechanism, and different source contributions of dissolved salt pollution in the shallow groundwater of Hutuo River alluvial-pluvial fan in the North China Plain.

With rapid urbanization and industrialization processes, the problem of groundwater pollution under the influence of various human activities has become increasingly severe in most developed areas of China. However, the problem of dissolved salt pollution caused by increasing concentrations of conventional ions is often overlooked and easier to be seen as a high background of natural formation rather than pollution. The Hutuo River alluvial fan in North China was selected as the study area; dissolved salt pollution is evaluated based on the factor analysis method (FA); groundwater exploitation…

Occurrence, toxicity, ecological risk, and remediation of diclofenac in surface water environments: a review with a focus on China.

Diclofenac (DCF) is a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug commonly used in health care, livestock, and pharmaceuticals and widely detected in surface water environments globally. Here, we reviewed the occurrence characteristics, migration pathways, and aquatic toxicity of DCF in surface water environments. Asian and African populations are exposed to high concentrations of DCF (> 8,000 ng L-1). Wastewater discharge, livestock, and industrial pollution are the primary factors influencing the concentration and distribution of DCF. Diclofenac can cause acute toxicity, oxidative stress, and other

Response of urban lake water quality to monthly hydro-meteorological drivers at the catchment scale.

Urban storm-water runoff transports nutrients into water bodies, where high temperature and wind accelerate pollution risks. Understanding the impact of hydro-meteorological and urban development factors, specifically gross domestic product (GDP), population density, and green cover rate, on water quality under climate change is essential for integrated urban water management. Focusing on East Lake in Wuhan (2012–2023), this study analyzes interannual and seasonal variations in precipitation, temperature, wind, and total phosphorus (TP) concentration, evaluates their statistical relationships,
