Tertiary treatment of domestic wastewater for reuse: Implementation and evaluation in a rural context in Chile.

Water scarcity in arid and semi-arid regions of Chile is intensifying demand for safe irrigation water sources. This study assesses a modular tertiary treatment train for rural wastewater reuse based on fixed-bed polishing with natural zeolite and activated carbon, followed by UV-C disinfection. Pilot-scale implementation at the La Higuera wastewater treatment plant confirmed robust field performance, reducing TSS by ≈ 70%, BOD5 by ≈ 56%, and fecal coliforms by 99.9%, enabling compliance with Chilean irrigation reuse criteria (NCh 1333; DS 90/2001). Average salinity indicators during monitorin

Decoupling Energy Demand from Boron Compliance in Seawater Desalination via a Hybrid Single-Pass Multistage (HSPM) System.

Achieving stringent boron compliance in seawater desalination has long depended on energy-intensive multipass reverse osmosis (RO) with alkaline dosing, creating a trade-off between energy consumption and water quality. This work breaks this bottleneck by developing a hybrid single-pass multistage (HSPM) system with selectivity-optimized loose RO membranes. Tailoring commercial RO membranes into high-flux variants via a 5 h controlled chlorination achieves an optimal balance, whereas an extended 20-h modification causes an impractical 24.1-fold increase in boron passage. Mechanistic analysis r

Regulation of Nanomaterials on the Preparation of Nanofiltration Membranes and Its Research Progress in the Water Treatment Field: A Review.

Nanofiltration (NF) membranes, a key branch of membrane separation technology, exhibit broad application potential in water treatment owing to their unique ability to precisely retain small-molecule solutes and further offer a feasible technical approach to overcoming the difficulties involved in complex water purification. Nevertheless, the existing NF membranes still have scope for enhancement in terms of core performance metrics. In detail, their membrane flux fails to meet the high-load and high-efficiency demands of industrial water treatment processes, their separation selectivity toward…

Piezoelectric-driven hydrogen peroxide production and in-situ utilization for organic wastewater decontamination and synchronous disinfection: Efficacy, mechanisms and comprehensive assessments.

Hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) is a green oxidant with broad potential in organic wastewater treatment applications. However, conventional research typically examines either H2O2 generation or its specific utilization independently, lacking a comprehensive exploration of integrated mechanisms from production to practical application. To bridge this gap, this study introduced scalable and eco-friendly bismuth oxyhalide piezocatalysts to construct an integrated system for simultaneous H2O2 production and efficient in-situ utilization. Such a cleverly designed system exhibited exceptional piezocatalyti

Tools for evaluation and prediction of industrial noise sources. Application to a wastewater treatment plant.

In recent years, acoustic pollution caused by noise has considerably increased in many countries. Particularly in Spain, the noisiest country in Europe. It is sometimes difficult to predict the noise levels that a new installation or an expansion of industrial equipment will cause in the surroundings. This work introduces a new methodology for the prediction, evaluation, and analysis of industrial noise sources, as well as a novel tool for predicting and categorizing outdoor noise from its measurement at their sources. A Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP) has been used to demonstrate the applic

Valorisation of cellulosic rejections from wastewater treatment plants through sugar production.

The widespread use of wipes and other sanitary products made of nonwoven fibres has led to an enormous problem in wastewater treatment systems that has been underestimated for some time. To date, there are no practical alternatives for recycling and valorisation. In this study, cellulosic rejections recovered from a wastewater treatment plant in Barcelona (Spain) were characterised and treated using hydrothermal and enzymatic methods to obtain free sugars. Steam explosion and autoclave pre-treatments were performed at different temperatures (120, 130, or 150 °C) and residence times (10-40 min)

Microbial electrolysis cell coupled with anaerobic granular sludge: A novel technology for real bilge water treatment.

In the current study, treatment of undiluted real bilge water (BW) and the production of methane was examined for the first time using a membraneless single chamber Microbial Electrolysis Cell (MEC) with Anaerobic Granular Sludge (AGS) for its biodegradation. Initially, Anaerobic Toxicity Assays (ATAs) were used to evaluate the effect of undiluted real BW on the methanogenic activity of AGS. According to the results, BW shown higher impact to acetoclastics compared to hydrogenotrophic methanogens which proved to be more tolerant. However, dilution of BW caused lower inhibition allowing BW biod

Enhanced coagulation and oxidation by the Mn(VII)-Fe(III)/peroxymonosulfate process: Performance and mechanisms.

To improve the performance of the conventional coagulation process, a permanganate (Mn(VII)) pre-oxidation combined with Fe(III)/peroxymonosulfate (PMS) coagulation process (Mn(VII)-Fe(III)/PMS) that can significantly improve the removal of dissolved organic carbon (DOC), turbidity, and micropollutants is proposed in this study. Compared with conventional Fe(III) coagulation, the Mn(VII)-Fe(III)/PMS process can also significantly enhance the removal of iohexol and sulfamethoxazole in raw water. During this process, the primary reduction product, Mn(IV), after Mn(VII) pre-oxidation was adsorbed

Effect of fine bubbles for washing of monolith type porous ceramic membranes treating oil-in-water emulsions.

Produced water generated in the recovery of crude oil contains oil and high concentrations of salts, organic matter, and suspended solids and must therefore be treated appropriately prior to disposal. Monolithic ceramic membranes have high oil removal rates and have the advantage of being compact, having a long life, and withstanding chemicals, heat, and high cleaning pressures. Membrane fouling, however, is a significant drawback to membrane filtration. Scrubbing using air bubbles generated by a diffuser is generally used to physically clean membranes. However, monolithic ceramic membranes ca

Robust adaptive boosted canonical correlation analysis for quality-relevant process monitoring of wastewater treatment.

Quality-relevant process monitoring has attracted much attention for its ability to assist in maintaining efficient plant operation. However, when the process suffers from non-stationary and over-complex (with noise, multiplicative faults, etc.) characteristics, the traditional methods usually cannot be effectively applied. To this end, a novel method, termed as Robust adaptive boosted canonical correlation analysis (Rab-CCA), is proposed to monitor the wastewater treatment processes. First, a robust decomposition method is proposed to mitigate the defects of standard CCA by decomposing the co

A novel bioprocess combining anaerobic co-digestion followed by ultra-filtration and microalgae culture for optimal olive mill wastewater treatment.

Treatment of olive mill wastewater (OMW) has received considerable research globally due to its influence on the technical, economic, and environmental sustainability of wastewater biogas production. This work presents a novel combined biological process for OMW treatment in terms to produce for the first time, treated OMW and a valuable microalgae biomass. The process involves anaerobic co-digestion (AD), a low cut-off membrane ultra-filtration (UF) and a subsequent Scenedesmus sp. culture. The AD of OMW was conducted at high initial COD ranging from 28 to 38 g/L using an up-flow anaerobic fi

Biofouling control: the impact of biofilm dispersal and membrane flushing.

Pure culture studies have shown that biofilm dispersal can be triggered if the nutrient supply is discontinued by stopping the flow. Stimulating biofilm dispersal in this manner would provide a sustainable manner to control unwanted biofilm growth in industrial settings, for instance on synthetic membranes used to purify water. The response of multispecies biofilms to nutrient limitation has not been thoroughly studied. To assess biomass dispersal during nutrient limitation it is common practise to flush the biofilm after a stop-period. Hence, flow-stop-induced biomass removal could occur as a

Development of a Mechanically Flexible 2D-MXene Membrane Cathode for Selective Electrochemical Reduction of Nitrate to N2: Mechanisms and Implications.

The contamination of water resources by nitrate is a major problem. Herein, we report a mechanically flexible 2D-MXene (Ti3C2Tx) membrane with multilayered nanofluidic channels for a selective electrochemical reduction of nitrate to nitrogen gas (N2). At a low applied potential of -0.8 V (vs Ag/AgCl), the MXene electrochemical membrane was found to exhibit high selectivity for NO3- reduction to N2 (82.8%) due to a relatively low desorption energy barrier for the release of adsorbed N2 (*N2) compared to that for the adsorbed NH3 (*NH3) based on density functional theory (DFT) calculations. Reactivity of the Polyamide Membrane Monomer with Free Chlorine: Role of Bromide.

Aromatic polyamide-based membranes are widely used for reverse osmosis (RO) and nanofiltration (NF) treatment but degrade when exposed to free chlorine (HOCl/OCl-). The reaction mechanisms with free chlorine were previously explored, but less is known about the role of bromide (Br-) in these processes. Br- may impact these reactions by reacting with HOCl to form HOBr, which then triggers other brominating agents (Br2O, Br2, BrOCl, and BrCl) to form. This study examined the reactivities of these brominating agents with a polyamide monomer model compound, benzanilide (BA), and a modified version

Recycling of TiO2-containing waste and utilization by photocatalytic degradation of a reactive dye solution.

Recently, the utilization of wastes, recovery of high value-added products from waste, and their use as raw materials in other industries with the logic of industrial symbiosis has become an important issue. In this study, removal efficiency of Reactive Orange 16 (RO16) dye from aqueous solution was studied using TiO2 catalyst recycled from an industrial waste effluent. The recycling of TiO2 waste from a paints manufacturing industry was carried out by sintering the TiO2-containing waste. The catalyst usability of TiO2-containing powder was then investigated in the removal of RO16 dye by photo

Microbially-induced mineral scaling in desalination conditions: Mechanisms and effects of commercial antiscalants.

Reverse osmosis (RO) technology is promising in the sustainable production of fresh water. However, expansion of RO use has been hindered by membrane fouling, mainly inorganic fouling known as scaling. Although membrane mineral scaling by chemical means have been investigated extensively, mineral scaling triggered by microbial activity has been largely neglected. In this study, the simultaneous biomineralization of CaCO3 and CaSO4 in the presence of three different microbial communities from fresh water, wastewater, and seawater was investigated. In the presence of either 13 or 79 mM of Ca2+ a

A multivariate modeling and experimental realization of photocatalytic system of engineered S-C3N4/ZnO hybrid for ciprofloxacin removal: Influencing factors and degradation pathways.

Ciprofloxacin, a pharmaceutically active compound, is present as a micropollutant in wastewater, which cannot be removed by conventional techniques due to its recalcitrant nature. Therefore, in the present study, the photocatalytic degradation of this bio-toxic compound was demonstrated using a three-dimensional sulfur-doped graphitic-carbon nitride/zinc oxide hybrid, with enriched oxygen vacancies. The influence of various water matrices and experimental conditions on the ciprofloxacin degradation was optimized. The hybrid material showed 98.8% and 75.8% degradation efficiency under optimum e

Volatile-Organic-Compound-Intercepting Solar Distillation Enabled by a Photothermal/Photocatalytic Nanofibrous Membrane with Dual-Scale Pores.

Solar distillation is emerging as a robust and energy-effective tool for water purification and freshwater production. However, many water sources contain harmful volatile organic compounds (VOCs), which can evaporate through the photothermal evaporators and be collected together with distilled water, or even be enriched in the distilled water. In view of the penetration of volatile organic compounds, herein, we rationally demonstrate a dual-scale porous, photothermal/photocatalytic, flexible membrane for intercepting volatile organic compounds during solar distillation, which is based on a me…

Molecular transformation of dissolved organic matter in refinery wastewater.

Dissolved organic matter (DOM) has an important impact on the water treatment and reuse of petroleum refinery wastewater. In order to improve the treatment efficiency, it is necessary to understand the chemical composition of the DOM in the treatment processes. In this paper, the molecular composition of DOM in wastewater samples from a representative refinery were characterized. The transformation of various compounds along the wastewater treatment processes was investigated. A total of 61 heteroatomic class species were detected from the DOM extracts, in which CHO (molecules composed of carb

Efficient Microcystis aeruginosa removal by moderate photocatalysis-enhanced coagulation with magnetic Zn-doped Fe3O4 particles.

Photocatalysis is becoming a popular method for the inactivation of algae cells. However, the previous research has mainly focused on the destruction of algae cells by photocatalysis for control of harmful blooms in natural waters. This study aims to investigate the effect of photocatalytic pretreatment on the coagulation process for Microcystis aeruginosa removal. Photocatalytic pretreatment by recyclable magnetic Zn-doped Fe3O4 particles under visible-light was indicated to enhance the algae removal efficiency from 10% to 96% with the catalyst dose of 0.05 g/L. The possible mechanism involve
