Emesis and space motion sickness in amphibians.

Amphibians possess the ability to vomit in response to a variety of stimuli that provoke emesis in mammals. Pharmacological studies have establish that the ejection of gastric contents and the basic mechanism for vomiting have been phylogenetically conserved among these tetrapods. As part of on-going comparative studies on emesis in vertebrates, we previously documented that some postmetamorphic anurans and salamander larvae experience motion-induced emesis when exposed to the provocative stimulus of parabolic aircraft flight. However, more recent experiments suggest that there are strict cond

Influence of gravity on the circadian timing system.

The circadian timing system (CTS) is responsible for daily temporal coordination of physiological and behavioral functions both internally and with the external environment. Experiments in altered gravitational environments have revealed changes in circadian rhythms of species ranging from fungi to primates. The altered gravitational environments examined included both the microgravity environment of spaceflight and hyperdynamic environments produced by centrifugation. Acute exposure to altered gravitational environments changed homeostatic parameters such as body temperature. These changes we

European vestibular experiments on the Spacelab-1 mission: 1. Overview.

During the flight of Spacelab-1 a series of vestibular experiments was performed on the crew by a group of European investigators. Control experiments were carried out on the same subjects pre- and postflight. The tests included caloric stimulation of the ears, threshold measurements of response to linear acceleration, motion sickness provocative stimuli, vestibulo-ocular reflexes during linear and angular stimulation, estimation of the subjective vertical (luminous line measurements) and static ocular counterrotation at various tilt angles. The caloric experiment proved the existence of a non

Physiological and behavioral effects of tilt-induced body fluid shifts.

This paper addresses the "fluid shift theory" of space motion sickness. The primary purpose of our research was the development of procedures to assess individual differences in response to rostral body fluid shifts on earth. Experiment I examined inner ear fluid pressure changes during head-down tilt in intact human beings. Tilt produced reliable changes. Differences among subjects and between ears within the same subject were observed. Experiment II examined auditory threshold changes during tilt. Tilt elicited increased auditory thresholds, suggesting that sensory depression may result from

Countermeasures against lumbar spine deconditioning in prolonged bed rest: resistive exercise with and without whole body vibration.

To evaluate the effect of short-duration, high-load resistive exercise, with and without whole body vibration on lumbar muscle size, intervertebral disk and spinal morphology changes, and low back pain (LBP) incidence during prolonged bed rest, 24 subjects underwent 60 days of head-down tilt bed rest and performed either resistive vibration exercise (n = 7), resistive exercise only (n = 8), or no exercise (n = 9; 2nd Berlin Bed-Rest Study). Discal and spinal shape was measured from sagittal plane magnetic resonance images. Cross-sectional areas (CSAs) of the multifidus, erector spinae, quadrat

Long-term potentiation in bone--a role for glutamate in strain-induced cellular memory?

BACKGROUND: The adaptive response of bone cells to mechanical strain is a primary determinant of skeletal architecture and bone mass. In vivo mechanical loading induces new bone formation and increases bone mineral density whereas disuse, immobilisation and weightlessness induce bone loss. The potency of mechanical strain is such that a single brief period of loading at physiological strain magnitude is able to induce a long-lasting osteogenic response that lasts for days. Although the process of mechanotransduction in bone is incompletely understood, observations that responses to mechanical …

[The unity of image recognition of tolite homothetic receptors and glycosylation end product receptors in biologic function in case of diabetes].

In compliance with our theory of biologic functions and reactions, pathogenesis of all diseases in formed in the framework of disorder of seven biologic functions: trophology, homeostasis, endoecology, adaptation, locomotion, genus continuation and intelligence. The disorder of biologic function of endoecology ("purity" of intercellular medium in vivo) is the most common basis of pathogenesis of diseases' nosological forms. There are two methods of elimination of disorder of this function. First is the biological reaction of excretion i.e. the removal of minor endogenic phlogogenes (initiators

Physiological cerebrospinal fluid interactions between brain and eye structures are altered after long-duration spaceflight.

Long-duration spaceflight represents an extreme challenge, triggering adaptive responses including spaceflight-associated neuro-ocular syndrome, characterized by diminished visual acuity and ocular changes, which is a significant health risk for Mars missions. Concurrently, spacefarers experience brain adaptations, including ventricular expansion and CSF redistribution; however, the integrative physiological mechanisms linking these brain-eye responses remain unestablished. We applied automated morphometric analysis to investigate brain-eye relationships using high-resolution MRI data from ter

Lateralized cerebral arterial blood flow and blood pressure adaptations to short-term head-down tilt: a 4D flow MRI study with cognitive function assessment.

BACKGROUND: Simulated microgravity, modeled by head-down tilt (HDT), induces cephalad fluid shifts that perturb intracranial hemodynamics and may affect cognitive function. However, the temporal adaptation of cerebral arterial blood flow (CaBF), both during simulated microgravity and throughout the recovery phase, remains incompletely understood. METHODS: In this study, 38 healthy male participants underwent a 7-day -6° HDT protocol followed by a 5-day recovery phase. Four-dimensional flow magnetic resonance imaging (4D flow MRI) was performed at 8 time points [baseline, HDT 12 h, HDT 1 d, HD

Cordycepin protects against simulated microgravity-induced osteogenic impairment involving ferroptosis-related signaling.

Microgravity-induced bone loss is a major challenge during long-duration spaceflight and is closely associated with impaired bone marrow mesenchymal stem cell (BMSC) function. Simulated microgravity (SMG) disrupts osteogenic differentiation and induces oxidative stress and mitochondrial dysfunction in BMSCs. Emerging evidence suggests that ferroptosis-related stress responses may contribute to these pathological alterations. However, effective pharmacological strategies and the underlying regulatory mechanisms remain incompletely understood. In the present study, we investigated the protective

Simulated microgravity exposure markedly attenuates the baroreflex total loop gain and induces orthostatic hypotension in male rats.

Autonomic dysfunction is recognized as the central mechanism of orthostatic hypotension after microgravity exposure. Because the arterial baroreflex regulates arterial pressure (AP) via sympathetic nerve activity (SNA), we investigated the systematic baroreflex function under simulated microgravity by conducting an open-loop analysis. We used Sprague-Dawley rats after hindlimb unloading (HU) for 2 weeks. We isolated the carotid sinuses from the systemic circulation, then changed intracarotid sinus pressure (CSP) stepwise and recorded SNA and AP responses. We compared CSP-AP (total loop), CSP-S

Is sleep affected after microgravity and hypergravity exposure? A pilot study.

Sleep is known to be affected in space travel and in residents of the international space station. But little is known about the direct effects of gravity changes on sleep, if other factors, such as sleep conditions, are kept constant. Here, as a first exploration, we investigated sleep before and after exposure to short bouts of microgravity and hypergravity during parabolic flights. Sleep was measured through actigraphy and self-report questionnaires in 20 healthy men and women before and after parabolic flight. Higher sleep fragmentation and more awakenings were found in the night after the

Imaging in spaceflight associated neuro-ocular syndrome (SANS): Current technology and future directions in modalities.

With plans for future long-duration crewed exploration, NASA has identified several high priority potential health risks to astronauts in space. One such risk is a collection of neurologic and ophthalmic findings termed spaceflight associated neuro-ocular syndrome (SANS). The findings of SANS include optic disc edema, globe flattening, retinal nerve fiber layer thickening, chorioretinal folds, hyperopic shifts, and cotton-wool spots. The cause of SANS was initially thought to be a cephalad fluid shift in microgravity leading to increased intracranial pressure, venous stasis and impaired CSF ou

Peculiarities of Pharmacokinetics and Bioavailability of Some Cardiovascular Drugs under Conditions of Antiorthostatic Hypokinesia.

We studied pharmacokinetics and bioavailability of verapamil, propranolol, and ethacizine in healthy volunteers after single oral administration under normal conditions and on the second day of simulated antiorthostatic hypokinesia modeling some effects of microgravity. Under conditions of antiorthostatic hypokinesia, a tendency to a decrease in half-elimination period, mean retention time, and volume of distribution and an increase in the rate of absorption, ratio of maximum concentrations, and relative rate of absorption of verapamil and propranolol were revealed. For ethacizine, a statistic

Down-regulation of GATA1-dependent erythrocyte-related genes in the spleens of mice exposed to a space travel.

Secondary lymphoid organs are critical for regulating acquired immune responses. The aim of this study was to characterize the impact of spaceflight on secondary lymphoid organs at the molecular level. We analysed the spleens and lymph nodes from mice flown aboard the International Space Station (ISS) in orbit for 35 days, as part of a Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency mission. During flight, half of the mice were exposed to 1 g by centrifuging in the ISS, to provide information regarding the effect of microgravity and 1 g exposure during spaceflight. Whole-transcript cDNA sequencing (RNA-Seq
