The role of public health interventions in modifying associations between prenatal exposures to ambient air pollution and extreme heat with child health outcomes: A systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Exposure during pregnancy to ambient air pollution and extreme heat has been linked to adverse birth, respiratory and neurodevelopmental outcomes in offspring. Pregnancy is a sensitive developmental period during which such exposures may have lasting impacts on the offspring. However, it is unclear whether public health interventions modify these associations. This review systematically examined this evidence. METHODS: We searched MEDLINE, Scopus, Embase, Web of Science, Global Health, Maternity and Infant Care, PubMed, CINAHL and EconLit to identify studies indexed from inception

Climate change, environmental exposures, and breast cancer: advancing climate-resilient oncology through sustainable development goal 13.

Climate change is increasingly recognized as a major determinant of human health, yet its implications for breast cancer prevention, progression, and healthcare delivery remain insufficiently integrated into global cancer control strategies. Breast cancer, the most commonly diagnosed malignancy among women worldwide, is influenced by a complex interplay of genetic, hormonal, environmental, and socioeconomic factors, many of which are being reshaped by climate change. This narrative review examines the intersections between climate change, environmental exposures, and breast cancer within the f

Spatiotemporal metabolomics of tobacco leaves in response to Pseudomonas syringae infection.

Tobacco (Nicotiana tabacum L.) is a major economic crop and a model for plant-pathogen interactions, yet the spatiotemporal dynamics of defense metabolism during infection remain poorly characterized. Here, we used MALDI-MSI-based spatial metabolomics to systematically profile tobacco leaves during Pseudomonas syringae infection. Multidimensional analysis of 1,399 annotated metabolites revealed distinct spatiotemporal regulation patterns. Temporally, early infection (12 h postinfection (hpi)) was characterized by increased organic acids and terpenoids, followed by a mid-stage shift toward phen

Emissions of climate-altering species from open vegetation fires in the Mediterranean region - A review on methods and data.

The climate change over the Mediterranean region poses serious concerns about the role of open vegetation fires in the emissions of climate-altering species. The aim of this work is to review the current methodologies for quantifying the emissions of greenhouse gases and black carbon from open vegetation fires, as well as the data provided by four state-of-the-art inventories of emissions of carbon dioxide (CO2), methane (CH4), nitrous oxide (N2O) and black carbon (BC) in the Mediterranean region for the period 2003-2020. A limited number of studies specifically addressed the quantification of

Long-term trends in British Columbia lower mainland air quality: Criteria air pollutants and VOC.

The lower mainland of British Columbia is a geographic region that comprises the districts of Metro Vancouver and the Lower Fraser Valley. It is situated in a complex topographical and coastal location in southwestern British Columbia. Metro Vancouver is Canada's third largest population center. Accessing the Canadian National Air Pollution Surveillance Program (NAPS) database we calculated air pollutant statistics using the Canadian Ambient Air Quality Standards (CAAQS) averaging times, numerical forms, and numerical levels for the years 2001to 2020. Man Kendall and Sen statistical methods we

"Nurse-The Archer" Fighting Against the Hidden Enemy.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: The coronavirus disease-2019 (COVID-19) pandemic is a global threat spreading like a wildfire and taking the world by its storm. It has challenged the healthcare delivery systems and disrupted them in a way no one ever imagined before. We at Apollo Hospitals, Chennai, Tamil Nadu, India received many patients in the COVID critical care unit (CCU) and found a gradual lack of bundle care compliance resulting in an upsurge of central line-associated bloodstream infection (CLABSI) amid the patients. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A qualitative research approach and quasi-experimental r

Evidences suggesting a possible role of Vitamin D in COVID 19: The missing link.

The severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 is spreading like wildfire with no specific recommended treatment in sight. While some risk factors such as the presence of comorbidities, old age, and ethnicity have been recognized, not a lot is known about who the virus will strike first or impact more. In this hopeless scenario, exploration of time-tested facts about viral infections, in general, seems to be a sound basis to prop further research upon. The fact that immunity and its various determinants (e.g., micronutrients, sleep, and hygiene) have a crucial role to play in the defense

Health Outcomes After Disaster for Older Adults With Chronic Disease: A Systematic Review.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: This review synthesizes the current literature surrounding chronic disease outcomes after weather- and climate-related disasters among older adults. The associations between exposure of older adults to weather- and climate-related disasters and the primary outcomes of diabetes, end-stage renal disease (ESRD), congestive heart failure (CHF), and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) were examined. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS: A systematic review of studies reporting on clinical outcomes of four chronic diseases after disaster exposure was performed. Under the

Poor air quality index on the day of embryo transfer may decrease the rate of embryo transfer success.

The objective of this retrospective cohort study was to evaluate whether air quality index (AQI) on the day of embryo transfer (ET) is associated with differences in clinical pregnancy rates (CPR). The study included all patients who underwent either fresh or frozen embryo transfer between June 1 - July 31, 2023 at a single academic fertility centre in New York. During this time, smoke originating from wildfires in Eastern Canada caused significant air pollution in New York. Patients who underwent single euploid embryo transfer were included and analysed separately. The main outcome measure wa…

A global aerosol model based on the analysis of 30-year ground measurements from AERONET (AEROEX model): Implications for satellite-derived aerosol retrievals.

The AErosol RObotic NETwork (AERONET), established in 1993, now spreads across 900 global sites, has about three decades of ground-based aerosol measurements. An aerosol model characterizes the physical and optical properties of atmospheric particles used in satellite and ground-based retrievals and climate simulations. Earlier aerosol models, developed using limited data (∼10-12 years, ∼250 sites), could not capture recent environmental shifts and associated changes in aerosol emissions driven by industrialization, land use changes, intensified wildfires, and dust storms. These changes necess…

Evaluating the Prevalence and Predictors of Moderate to Severe Depression in Fort McMurray, Canada during the COVID-19 Pandemic.

BACKGROUND: The Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic has produced adverse health consequences, including mental health consequences. Studies indicate that residents of Fort McMurray, a community which has experienced trauma from flooding and wildfires in the past, may be more vulnerable to the mental health effects of the pandemic. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to examine the prevalence and predictors of likely Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) among residents of Fort McMurray during the COVID-19 pandemic. METHODS: A cross-sectional approach was adopted utilizing an online survey questionnair…
