Portable and Hand-Held Ammonia Gas Sensor Enables Noninvasive Prediagnosis of Helicobacter pylori Infection.

Disease diagnosis of Helicobacter pylori (Hp) through human exhaled breath analysis has attracted considerable attention. However, conventional methods, such as carbon 13 (13C) breath test and infrared spectrometers, are facing the challenge of achieving portability and reliability synchronously. Herein, we report a portable and hand-held Hp analyzer using a bimetallic PtRu@SnO2-based gas sensor for the prediagnosis of Hp infection, which is based on detecting ammonia (NH3) as a potential biomarker in exhaled breath. Owing to the surface functionalization through highly catalytically active bi

Evaluation of a new simple collection device for sampling of microparticles in exhaled breath.

The microparticle fraction of exhaled breath is of interest for developing clinical biomarkers. Exhaled particles may contain non-volatile components from all parts of the airway system, formed during normal breathing. This study aimed to evaluate a new, simple sampling device, based on impaction, for collecting microparticles from exhaled breath. Performance of the new device was compared with that of the existing SensAbues membrane filter device. The analytical work used liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry methods. The new device collected three subsamples and these were separatel

Detection of carbon disulfide in breath and air: a possible new risk factor for coronary artery disease.

Carbon disulfide (CS2) is toxic to the heart and arteries; chronic exposure can result in accelerated atherosclerosis and coronary artery disease in humans and animals. Exposure to CS2 was investigated in normal volunteers working in New York City, using a new and highly sensitive assay. Volatile organic compounds in breath and air were captured in adsorbent traps containing graphitized carbon and molecular sieve, then thermally desorbed, concentrated by two-stage cryofocusing, and assayed for CS2 by gas chromatography/mass spectroscopy. Breath CS2 assays were performed in 42 normal volunteers

Exhalation-synchronous robotic abdominal compression for user-centered respiratory assistance and training in neurological patients.

BACKGROUND: Patients with respiratory weaknesses due to neurological disorders or aging often face usability challenges with conventional mechanical ventilators, which directly move air in and out of the lungs via the ventilation mask. To address these challenges, Exo-Abs was developed to support a wide range of respiratory functions through synchronous abdominal compression. Its control previously relied on continuous full-phase measurements from multiple sensors to ensure control performance across a wide dynamic range. However, accommodating long-term usage scenarios remained challenging, a

Human responses to propionic acid. II. Quantification of breathing responses and their relationship to perception.

In 20 normal and four anosmic participants, instantaneous inhalation and exhalation flow rates were recorded in response to 15 s stimulations with clean air or propionic acid concentrations (0.16, 1.14, 8.22 and 59.15 p.p.m., v/v) that ranged from peri-threshold for normals to clearly supra-threshold for anosmics. Each odorant/irritant delivery to the face-mask began with an exhalation. This allowed concentration to reach full value before stimulus onset, defined as the point where the participant began to bring the stimulus into the nose by inhalation. Two seconds after this stimulus onset, n

Assessing the relationship between movement and airflow in the upper airway using computational fluid dynamics with motion determined from magnetic resonance imaging.

BACKGROUND: Computational fluid dynamics simulations of respiratory airflow in the upper airway reveal clinically relevant information, including sites of local resistance, inhaled particle deposition, and the effect of pathological constrictions. Unlike previous simulations, which have been performed on rigid anatomical models from static medical imaging, this work utilises ciné imaging during respiration to create dynamic models and more closely represent airway physiology. METHODS: Airway movement maps were obtained from non-rigid image registration of fast-cine MRI and applied to high-spa

Improving asthma outcomes in minority children: a randomized, controlled trial of parent mentors.

OBJECTIVE: Because asthma disproportionately affects minorities, we evaluated the effects of parent mentors (PMs) on asthma outcomes in minority children. METHODS: This randomized, controlled trial allocated minority asthmatic children to the PM intervention or traditional asthma care. Intervention families were assigned PMs (experienced parents of asthmatic children who received specialized training). PMs met monthly with children and families at community sites, phoned parents monthly, and made home visits. Ten asthma outcomes and costs were monitored for 1 year. Outcomes were examined by u

Thoracoabdominal asynchrony associates with exercise intolerance in fibrotic interstitial lung diseases.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: The precise coordination of respiratory muscles during exercise minimizes work of breathing and avoids exercise intolerance. Fibrotic interstitial lung disease (f-ILD) patients are exercise-intolerant. We assessed whether respiratory muscle incoordination and thoracoabdominal asynchrony (TAA) occur in f-ILD during exercise, and their relationship with pulmonary function and exercise performance. METHODS: We compared breathing pattern, respiratory mechanics, TAA and respiratory muscle recruitment in 31 f-ILD patients and 31 healthy subjects at rest and during incremen…

Potassium and ventilation in exercise.

The drive to breathe in exercise is thought to result from a combination of neural and humoral factors, but the exact nature of the controlling signals is controversial. This review examines evidence suggesting that potassium could be a signal that drives ventilation (VE) in exercise. Potassium is lost from working muscle, which results in a marked hyperkalemia in the arterial plasma. The rise in potassium is directly proportional to the increase in carbon dioxide production during exercise and is also well correlated with VE in normal subjects and in subjects who do not produce acid (McArdle'

Hyperinflation with intrinsic PEEP and respiratory muscle blood flow.

Increased end-expiratory lung volume and intrinsic positive end-expiratory pressure (PEEP) are common in obstructive lung disease, especially during exacerbations or exercise. This loads the respiratory muscles and may also stress the circulatory system, causing a reduction or redistribution of cardiac output. We measured the blood flow to respiratory muscles and systemic organs using colored microspheres in 10 spontaneously breathing anesthetized tracheotomized dogs. Flows during baseline breathing (BL) were compared with those during hyperinflation (HI) induced by a mechanical analogue of ai

Changes to Ventilation, Vocalization, and Thermal Nociception in the Pink1-/- Rat Model of Parkinson's Disease.

BACKGROUND: Individuals with Parkinson's disease (PD) experience significant vocal communication deficits. Findings in the Pink1-/- rat model of early-onset PD suggest that ultrasonic vocal communication is impaired early, progressively worsens prior to nigrostriatal dopamine depletion, and is associated with loss of locus coeruleus neurons, brainstem α-synuclein, and larynx pathology. Individuals with PD also demonstrate ventilatory deficits and altered sensory processing, which may contribute to vocal deficits. OBJECTIVE: The central hypothesis is that ventilatory and sensory deficits are p

Psychological problems associated with the wearing of industrial respirators: a review.

This review has dealt with the psychological problems associated with the use of industrial respirators. The need for men and women to wear various self contained breathing apparatus (SCBA) while working in hostile environments such as toxic and oxygen deficient atmospheres is well documented. Extensive research has been carried out in an attempt to improve the design of respirators, and major advances have resulted in the manufacture of SCBA that insure health, safety, and performance. Indeed, recent research reveals that performance decrements associated with the wearing of respirators are d
