A Rare Case of Spontaneous Intracranial Hypotension Secondary to C4-C5 and T12 Dural Tears Following a Yoga Class.

Spontaneous intracranial hypotension (SIH) is a potentially debilitating condition caused by cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) leakage through dural tears, leaking meningeal diverticula, or CSF-venous fistulae. This case report describes two yoga-induced dural tears leading to spontaneous SIH. Diagnosing SIH due to dural tears and CSF leaks can be challenging, but magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) aids in confirmation. A woman in her 30s presented to the Emergency Department with a three-week history of sudden, right-sided orthostatic headache following a yoga session, accompanied by tinnitus, visual d…

Exploring the Effectiveness of Hatha Yoga as a Complementary Treatment for Adolescent Idiopathic Scoliosis: Clinical Effect and Future Research Directions.

Adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS) is a common spinal deformity that primarily affects adolescents during the key period of growth and development. While traditional treatment methods often involve bracing or surgery, Hatha yoga, a millennia-old practice rooted in Indian tradition, has emerged as a complementary option for AIS cases. This paper explores the potential benefits of Hatha yoga for adolescents with AIS. It also discusses the limitations of existing research, such as the lack of large-scale randomized controlled trials (RCTs), varying yoga protocols, and challenges in blinding pa…

Effect of yoga-based lifestyle and dietary modification in overweight individuals with sleep apnea: A randomized controlled trial (ELISA).

BACKGROUND: Obesity is recognised as an important risk factor for obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), with obese individuals at a four times higher risk of being diagnosed with the syndrome. Treating obesity with lifestyle modification is associated with a reduction in the severity of obstructive sleep apnea. Yoga comprises lifestyle modification that includes asana (postures), pranayama (breathing techniques), dhyana (meditation) and guideline principles for healthy living (Yama and Niyama). There is a scarcity of data to evaluate the effect of yoga on OSA. This study was conducted to evaluate the…

Impact of an Integrated Yoga Therapy Protocol on Insulin Resistance and Glycemic Control in Patients with Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus.

OBJECTIVE: Diabetes mellitus (DM), characterized by chronic hyperglycemia, is attributed to relative insulin deficiency or resistance, or both. Studies have shown that yoga can modulate parameters of insulin resistance. The present study explored the possible beneficial effects of integrated yoga therapy with reference to glycemic control and insulin resistance (IR) in individuals with diabetes maintained on standard oral medical care with yoga therapy, compared to those on standard oral medical care alone. METHODS: In this study, the subjects on yoga intervention comprised 35 type 2 diabetic…

Comparing Types of Yoga for Chronic Low Back and Neck Pain in Military Personnel: A Feasibility Randomized Controlled Trial.

BACKGROUND: Chronic low back pain (cLBP) and chronic neck pain (cNP) are highly prevalent conditions and common reasons for disability among military personnel. Yoga and other mind-body interventions have been shown to safely decrease pain and disability in persons with cLBP and/or cNP but have not been adequately studied in active duty military personnel. The objective of this study was to examine the feasibility and acceptability of delivering 2 types of yoga (hatha and restorative) to a sample of active-duty military personnel with cLBP/cNP. METHODS: Military personnel with cLBP and/or cNP…

The application of "upper-body yoga" in elderly patients with acute hip fracture: a prospective, randomized, and single-blind study.

PURPOSES: Hip fracture leads to decreased activity and an increased risk of pulmonary complications. METHODS: This was a prospective, randomized, and single-blind study. Eighty-four subjects aged over 65 years were randomly divided into either a control group or a yoga group to undergo an abdominal breathing program or an "upp…

Feasibility of a 6-Month Yoga Program to Improve the Physical and Psychosocial Status of Persons with Multiple Sclerosis and their Family Members.

CONTEXT: To the best of our knowledge, there has been no study on yoga that includes both persons with multiple sclerosis (MS) and their family members. Because yoga has therapeutic effects in both persons with MS and healthy persons, we hypothesized that it would be an effective method to improve not only the physical and psychosocial status but also the time persons with MS and their family members spend together. OBJECTIVE: To examine the feasibility of a 6-month (long-term) yoga program to improve the physical and psychosocial status of persons with MS and their family members. DESIGN: U…
