Perceived burden of care and reported coping strategies and needs for family caregivers of people with mental disorders in Zimbabwe.

BACKGROUND: Mental health service resources are inadequate in low-income countries, and families are frequently expected to provide care for their relative with a mental disorder. However, research on the consequences of caregiving has been limited in low-income countries, including Zimbabwe. OBJECTIVE: The study explored the perceived impact of mental illness, reported coping strategies and reported needs of the family members of persons diagnosed with bipolar affective disorder or schizophrenia attending a psychiatric hospital in Harare, Zimbabwe. METHODS: A purposive sample of 31 family m…

Treatment outcomes of adult patients with recurrent tuberculosis in relation to HIV status in Zimbabwe: a retrospective record review.

BACKGROUND: Zimbabwe is a Southern African country with a high HIV-TB burden and is ranked 19th among the 22 Tuberculosis high burden countries worldwide. Recurrent TB is an important problem for TB control, yet there is limited information about treatment outcomes in relation to HIV status. This study was therefore conducted in Chitungwiza, a high density dormitory town outside the capital city, to determine in adults registered with recurrent TB how treatment outcomes were affected by type of recurrence and HIV status. METHODS: Data were abstracted from the Chitungwiza district TB register …

Complete nucleotide sequence of Middelburg virus, isolated from the spleen of a horse with severe clinical disease in Zimbabwe.

The complete nucleotide sequence of Middelburg virus (MIDV) was determined for strain MIDV-857 from Zimbabwe. The isolation of this virus in 1993 from a horse that died showing severe clinical signs represents the first indication that MIDV can cause severe disease in equids. Full-length cDNA copies of the viral genome were successfully synthesized by an innovative RT-PCR amplification approach using an 'anchor primer' combined with the SMART methodology described previously for the synthesis of full-length cDNA copies from genome segments of dsRNA viruses. The MIDV-857 genome is 11,674 nt, ex…

Osteogenesis imperfecta in Zimbabwe: a comparison between treatment with intramedullary rods of fixed-length and self-expanding rods.

The results of surgical treatment of 15 children with osteogenesis imperfecta in Bulawayo, Zimbabwe are reviewed. A total of 23 self-expanding and 27 fixed-length rods were used. Outcome was measured in terms of mobility status, growth, incidence of refracture, need for reoperation, and complications. Eight of the children improved their mobility status over the course of treatment. Self-expanding rods appeared to confer more benefit to growth than fixed-length rods. Refracture was more common in bones splinted with fixed-length rods and more often necessitated revision surgery in these bones.…

Severe Klebsiella infection as a cause of mortality in neonates in Harare, Zimbabwe: evidence from postmortem blood cultures.

Postmortem blood cultures were taken from 105 neonates dying at Harare Hospital during a 1-year period. The infants were characterized by prematurity (63% < 37 weeks gestation), low birth weight (60% < 2500 g) and low Apgar score at 1 min (43% < 3). More than one-half of the infants died within 48 hours of admission. Positive blood cultures within 10 minutes of death occurred in 44% of infants, and Klebsiella sp. were by far the most common isolates. Positive blood cultures were associated with very low birth weight (< 1500 g), and with babies who survived for > 48 hours. Antibodies to human i

Prevalence and intensity of schistosomiasis in two rural areas in Zimbabwe and their relationship to village location and snail infection rates.

Surveys for schistosomiasis of 2498 people of various ages from 22 villages in northeast Zimbabwe are reported. A high prevalence of Schistosoma haematobium (53.1%) and a medium prevalence of S. mansoni (17.5%) were found. Schistosoma haematobium prevalence among males was significantly higher than among females. Age prevalence curves for both schistosome species showed a typical pattern with the peak in the ten to 20 years age group, which is also the age group with the highest potential of contaminating water with excreta. Snail surveys at 12 local sites showed the presence of Bulinus globos…

Evaluation of the diagnostic performance of the Eazyplex platform for detection of Chlamydia trachomatis and Neisseria gonorrhoeae among women in Zimbabwe.

BACKGROUND: Gaps in sexually transmitted infection (STI) diagnosis hinder effective STI control particularly in low-resource settings where syndromic management is often the standard of care. Rapid and affordable point-of-care (POC) diagnostics for STIs such as Chlamydia trachomatis (CT) and Neisseria gonorrhoeae (NG) are needed. This study evaluated the diagnostic performance of Eazyplex (a point-of-care test (POCT)) to screen CT and NG among sexually active women in Zimbabwe. METHODS: We enrolled 220 sexually active women aged 18-35 (median 28 years) years attending a family planning clinic…

A qualitative analysis of female sex workers' lived experiences with adherence to Pre-exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP) in Zimbabwe.

BACKGROUND: Female sex workers (FSWs) are at an elevated risk of HIV infection with an eight-fold risk of HIV infection. In countries like Zimbabwe, FSWs have an HIV incidence of around 10.2%. With this elevated risk, the World Health Organization has prioritized Female sex workers (FSWS) for PrEP - an HIV prevention option taken as a daily pill during periods of risk but, FSWs continue to experience challenges with daily PrEP adherence due to daily dosing, related side effects, ARV stigma and low risk perception. This article presents the FSWs' lived experiences with PrEP adherence in Zimbabw…

Understanding the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic and its control measures on women and children: A Zimbabwe case study.

COVID-19 presented countries with unprecedented health policy challenges. For low-income countries in particular, policymakers had to contend with both the direct threats posed by COVID-19 as well as the social, educational, and economic harms associated with lockdown and other infection prevention and control measures. We present a holistic and contextualised case study of the direct and indirect impacts of COVID-19 on women and children, with some assessment of their uneven distribution across socio-economic, age and gender groups. We used different types of primary and secondary data from m

Blood donation projections using hierarchical time series forecasting: the case of Zimbabwe's national blood bank.

BACKGROUND: The discrepancy between blood supply and demand requires accurate forecasts of the blood supply at any blood bank. Accurate blood donation forecasting gives blood managers empirical evidence in blood inventory management. The study aims to model and predict blood donations in Zimbabwe using hierarchical time series. The modelling technique allows one to identify, say, a declining donor category, and in that way, the method offers feasible and targeted solutions for blood managers to work on. METHODS: The monthly blood donation data covering the period 2007 to 2018, collected from …

Knowledge, attitudes and practices towards rabies: A survey of the general population residing in the Harare Metropolitan Province of Zimbabwe.

BACKGROUND: Rabies remains endemic to the Harare Metropolitan Province of Zimbabwe, with a lack of public participations potentially contributing to the limited success in eliminating the disease. We hypothesized that rabies intervention campaigns were less successful than they could be as a result of poor understanding of the disease at the community level, and thus aimed to identify the knowledge, attitudes, and practices towards rabies in the province. METHODS: A cross-sectional survey, using a semi-structured questionnaire, was implemented between January 2017 and June 2018 across the pro…
