Some coumarin-based fluorophores were synthesized and characterized by elemental analysis, (1)H NMR, (13)C NMR and MS. The solid-state photoluminescence properties were studied. A recently developed nonlinear optical pump-probe microscopy technique uses modulation transfer to sensitively extract excited-state dynamics of endogenous biological pigments, such as eumelanin and pheomelanin. In this work, we use this method to image and characterize several inorganic and organic pigments used in historical art. We show substantial differences in the near-IR pump-probe signatures from nominally similar pigments and suggest extensions to art restoration.

BACKGROUND: Metered transdermal estradiol spray may cause ipsilateral hyperpigmentation of the nipple and areola.
CASES: Two women who were using transdermal estradiol spray for the treatment of postmenopausal symptoms developed hyperpigmentation of the ipsilateral areola and nipple. The appearance was variable in onset and did not appear to be related to the duration of use.
CONCLUSION: Estradiol transdermal spray can have the rare side effect of ipsilateral nipple and areolar hyperpigmentation. The time of onset can vary.

The removal of lead from aqueous solutions by adsorption on filamentous fungal biomass was studied. Batch biosorption experiments were performed to screen a series of selected fungal strains for effective lead removal at different metal and biomass concentrations. Biosorption of the Pb2+ ions was strongly affected by pH. The fungal biomass exhibited the highest lead adsorption capacity at pH 6.
