Impact of Alcohol-Induced Facial Flushing Phenotype on Alcohol Consumption Among Korean Adults: 2-Year Cross-Sectional Study.

BACKGROUND: The alcohol-induced facial flushing phenotype (flushing) is common among East Asians. Despite a small intake of alcohol, they experience heightened levels of acetaldehyde, a group-1 carcinogen, which, in turn, causes unpleasant symptoms such as redness, acting as a robust protective mechanism against consuming alcohol. However, some individuals with this genetic trait exhibit weakened alcohol restraint, which increases the risk of developing alcohol-related cancers, such as esophageal and head or neck cancer, by several times. Although this flushing phenomenon is crucial for public

Oral Administration of Alcohol-Tolerant Lactic Acid Bacteria Alleviates Blood Alcohol Concentration and Ethanol-Induced Liver Damage in Rodents.

Excessive alcohol consumption can have serious negative consequences on health, including addiction, liver damage, and other long-term effects. The causes of hangovers include dehydration, alcohol and alcohol metabolite toxicity, and nutrient deficiency due to absorption disorders. Additionally, alcohol consumption can slow reaction times, making it more difficult to rapidly respond to situations that require quick thinking. Exposure to a large amount of ethanol can also negatively affect a person's righting reflex and balance. In this study, we evaluated the potential of lactic acid bacteria

Person-specific and pooled prediction models for binge eating, alcohol use and binge drinking in bulimia nervosa and alcohol use disorder.

BACKGROUND: Machine learning could predict binge behavior and help develop treatments for bulimia nervosa (BN) and alcohol use disorder (AUD). Therefore, this study evaluates person-specific and pooled prediction models for binge eating (BE), alcohol use, and binge drinking (BD) in daily life, and identifies the most important predictors. METHODS: A total of 120 patients (BN: 50; AUD: 51; BN/AUD: 19) participated in an experience sampling study, where over a period of 12 months they reported on their eating and drinking behaviors as well as on several other emotional, behavioral, and contextu

Efficacy of SGLT2 Inhibitors Versus Pioglitazone in the Treatment of Non-alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease or Non-alcoholic Steatohepatitis: A Systematic Review.

Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is a complication related to obesity and metabolic syndrome. There are increased incidences of NAFLD/non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) due to rising obesity and type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). This has resulted in significant morbidity and mortality. The two promising therapeutic agents for treating NAFLD/NASH are sodium-glucose cotransporter 2 (SGLT2) inhibitors and pioglitazone. The reason is their potential to target underlying pathophysiological mechanisms. SGLT2 inhibitors may help treat NAFLD/NASH by reducing insulin resistance and improving

Effects of beer, wine, and baijiu consumption on non-alcoholic fatty liver disease: Potential implications of the flavor compounds in the alcoholic beverages.

Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is one of the most common causes of chronic liver disease and its global incidence is estimated to be 24%. Beer, wine, and Chinese baijiu have been consumed worldwide including by the NAFLD population. A better understanding of the effects of these alcoholic beverages on NAFLD would potentially improve management of patients with NAFLD and reduce the risks for progression to fibrosis, cirrhosis, and hepatocellular carcinoma. There is evidence suggesting some positive effects, such as the antioxidative effects of bioactive flavor compounds in beer, wine

Prior experience with flavored alcohol increases preference for flavored alcohol but flavor does not influence binge-like drinking behavior in mice.

BACKGROUND: Binge drinking can lead to various negative consequences and in non-experimental settings, alcohol usually contains flavoring, which may promote increased binge drinking. Preclinical models of binge-like drinking have been well established, however, the influence of flavor on alcohol preference and binge-like drinking has not been fully explored. METHODS: Male and female C57BL/6 J mice were tested via two-bottle choice with alcohol flavored with different concentrations of unsweetened Cherry flavor Kool-Aid and water. Next, mice were tested for preference for flavored alcohol over

Racial/Ethnic Disparity in Association Between Fetal Alcohol Syndrome and Alcohol Intake During Pregnancy: Multisite Retrospective Cohort Study.

BACKGROUND: Alcohol consumption during pregnancy is associated with a range of adverse birth-related outcomes, including stillbirth, low birth weight, preterm birth, and fetal alcohol syndrome (FAS). With more than 10% of women consuming alcohol during pregnancy worldwide, it is increasingly important to understand how racial/ethnic variations affect FAS onset. However, whether race and ethnicity inform FAS risk assessment when daily ethanol intake is controlled for remains unknown. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to assess racial/ethnic disparities in FAS risk associated with alcohol consumption

Significant gut microbiota related to patterns of drinking and alcohol relapse in patients with alcoholic hepatitis undergoing stool transplant or corticosteroid therapy.

Alcohol-induced gut microbiota (GM) alterations are linked to alcohol use disorder (AUD) pathogenesis. Healthy donor stool transplant (fecal microbiota transplant [FMT]) reduced alcohol desire and improved clinical outcomes in small animal and human studies. Baseline and post-therapy-related GM changes in a real-world cohort with severe alcohol-related liver disease and AUD, patterns of drinking, and relapse have not been studied. We prospectively analyzed retrospective clinical data and stored samples to examine GM alterations in a cohort of severe alcohol-associated hepatitis (SAH) patients

The Effects of Probiotics, Prebiotics and Synbiotics in Non-Alcoholic Fat Liver Disease (NAFLD) and Non-Alcoholic Steatohepatitis (NASH): A Systematic Review.

Modifications in the microbiota caused by environmental and genetic reasons can unbalance the intestinal homeostasis, deregulating the host's metabolism and immune system, intensifying the risk factors for the development and aggravation of non-alcoholic fat liver disease (NAFLD). The use of probiotics, prebiotics and synbiotics have been considered a potential and promising strategy to regulate the gut microbiota and produce beneficial effects in patients with liver conditions. For this reason, this review aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of probiotics, prebiotics, and symbiotics in patien

FKBP5 inhibitors modulate alcohol drinking and trauma-related behaviors in a model of comorbid post-traumatic stress and alcohol use disorder.

Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) leads to enhanced alcohol drinking and development of alcohol use disorder (AUD). Identifying shared neural mechanisms might help discover new therapies for PTSD/AUD. Here, we employed a rat model of comorbid PTSD/AUD to evaluate compounds that inhibit FK506-binding protein 51 (FKBP5), a co-chaperone modulator of glucocorticoid receptors implicated in stress-related disorders. Male and female rats received a familiar avoidance-based shock stress followed by voluntary alcohol drinking. We then assessed trauma-related behaviors through sleep bout cycles, hyp

Service-level barriers to and facilitators of access to services for the treatment of alcohol use disorder and problematic alcohol use: protocol for a scoping review.

INTRODUCTION: Prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, substance use health services for treatment of alcohol use disorder and problematic alcohol use (AUD/PAU) were fragmented and challenging to access. The pandemic magnified system weaknesses, often resulting in disruptions of treatment as alcohol use during the pandemic rose. When treatment services were available, utilisation was often low for various reasons. Virtual care was implemented to offset the drop in in-person care, however accessibility was not universal. Identification of the characteristics of treatment services for AUD/PAU that impact

Validating transdermal alcohol biosensors: a meta-analysis of associations between blood/breath-based measures and transdermal alcohol sensor output.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Transdermal alcohol sensors carry immense promise for the continuous assessment of drinking but are inconsistent in detecting more fine-grained indicators of alcohol consumption. Prior studies examining associations between transdermal alcohol concentration (TAC) and blood/breath alcohol concentration (BAC) have yielded highly variable correlations and lag times. The current review aimed to synthesize transdermal validation studies, aggregating results from more than three decades of research to characterize the validity of transdermal sensors for assessing alcohol consump
