A Serious Game to Train Rhythmic Abilities in Children With Dyslexia: Feasibility and Usability Study.

BACKGROUND: Rhythm perception and production are related to phonological awareness and reading performance, and rhythmic deficits have been reported in dyslexia. In addition, rhythm-based interventions can improve cognitive function, and there is consistent evidence suggesting that they are an efficient tool for training reading skills in dyslexia. OBJECTIVE: This paper describes a rhythmic training protocol for children with dyslexia provided through a serious game (SG) called Mila-Learn and the methodology used to test its usability. METHODS: We computed Mila-Learn, an SG that makes traini

Are abnormal event-related potentials specific to children with ADHD? A comparison with two clinical groups.

Children with attention deficit disorder and hyperactivity (ADHD) were compared with two other clinical groups, namely, children with autism and children with dyslexia, with respect to several peaks of the ERP. By using these other clinical groups, it was studied whether amplitude differences between children and ADHD and normal control children, which were found in an earlier study, were specific to children with ADHD. ERPs were measured in response to stimuli in an auditory and a visual oddball task. Only with respect to the P3 and Pz, measured in response to deviant auditory stimuli, did th

Beyond homogeneity: charting the landscape of heterogeneity in neurodevelopmental and psychiatric electroencephalography.

Electroencephalography (EEG) has been thoroughly studied for decades in neurodevelopmental and psychiatric research. Yet its integration into clinical practice as a diagnostic/prognostic tool remains unachieved. We hypothesize that a key reason is the underlying patient's heterogeneity, overlooked in EEG research relying on a case-control approach. We combine high-density EEG with normative modeling to quantify this heterogeneity using two well-established and extensively investigated EEG characteristics -spectral power and functional connectivity- across a cohort of 1674 patients with attenti

Sensory Dysregulation Is Associated With Worse Symptom Severities in Youth With Tic Disorder.

BackgroundMany individuals with chronic tic disorders endorse sensory dysregulation. Whether sensory dysregulation is linked with co-occurring conditions or associated with greater tic severity, urge severity, or severity of co-occurring conditions in this population is unknown. Characterizing sensory dysregulation in chronic tic disorders may help illustrate the mechanisms underlying development of chronic tic disorders.MethodsWe enrolled 40 subjects ages 6 to 17 with chronic tic disorders. Sensory profiles were determined by the parent-proxy reported Short Sensory Profile 2 or the self-repor

Optimizing an eHealth insomnia intervention for children with neurodevelopmental disorders: a Delphi study.

Insomnia, which is related to daytime deficits and is a common problem for children with neurodevelopmental disorders (NDDs), is often successfully treated with behavioral strategies. However, there are barriers to accessing these treatments, and there has been little research examining what these interventions need to be usable and effective. The goal of this study was to gain consensus from experts in the field on the key components of an eHealth, parent-implemented, intervention program aimed at improving sleep in children with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder, autism spectrum disor

Sleep behaviors and disorders in children and adolescents evaluated at psychiatric clinics.

The parents of 150 children and adolescents, evaluated at a university psychiatry outpatient clinic and a mental health center, were surveyed to determine the frequency of various sleep-related behaviors. This clinic sample was compared with a nonclinic sample of 309 subjects from the general population. A significantly higher incidence of restless sleep, limb movements, nightmares, night terrors, reluctance going to sleep, sleeping with others, fear of dying, fears of dark, and daytime overactivity differentiated the clinic population from the nonclinic population. There were no significant d

ADHD Symptoms Increase Perception of Classroom Entropy and Impact Teacher Stress Levels.

Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a common neuropsychiatric disorder among school-age children, characterized by persistent behavioral patterns of inattention and/or hyperactivity/impulsivity. These behaviors can create stress for teachers and negatively affect teacher-student interactions. This study hypothesized that a high frequency of ADHD students in the classroom can increase internal and external entropy, ultimately resulting in a negative stress impact on teachers. The physical concept of entropy, which measures the degree of disorder in a system, was used to better un

[Adult psychiatry does not recognize child neuropsychiatric disorders. A registry study shows discrepancy between expected and real number of cases].

To identify the group of patients with presumed special needs in adult psychiatry, a list survey was made covering 11 months of diagnostic work in adult psychiatry with a catchment area of 213,000 inhabitants. The survey was made in the urban setting of Gothenburg. During the period of observation, 6,386 patients were diagnosed. Among them 156 (2.4%) were diagnosed with a neuropsychiatric diagnosis of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, autism spectrum disorders, disorders associated with Tourette's syndrome or mental retardation. The adult psychiatric hospital care does not recognize ch

Effect of resident and direct-care staff training on responding during social interactions.

The effectiveness of a multifaceted training package was evaluated for inappropriate social behavior of five children with mild mental retardation and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), who resided in a facility. The procedure encompassed resident training with video feedback and self-management and direct-care staff training with video and graphic feedback. Resident training occurred on an individual basis; feedback to staff was presented during routine staff meetings. Results showed increases of appropriate staff responses to residents' behavior. However, the effect of the pack

Adult familial dyslexia: a retrospective developmental and psychosocial profile.

This study investigated the developmental, demographic, educational, and psychosocial outcome of 36 adults with third-generation familial dyslexia. Control subjects were 44 unaffected age-matched family members. Compared with control subjects, those with familial dyslexia 1) had similar incidences of perinatal complications, left-handedness, and right-left confusion but reported more early speech/language problems; 2) performed worse in reading and spelling but had similar educational achievement; 3) were more likely to report depression/anxiety symptoms and to have attention-deficit disorder

Neural Substrates of the Drift-Diffusion Model in Brain Disorders.

Many studies on the drift-diffusion model (DDM) explain decision-making based on a unified analysis of both accuracy and response times. This review provides an in-depth account of the recent advances in DDM research which ground different DDM parameters on several brain areas, including the cortex and basal ganglia. Furthermore, we discuss the changes in DDM parameters due to structural and functional impairments in several clinical disorders, including Parkinson's disease, Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), Autism Spectrum Disorders, Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD), and sch

Why Do They Do It? The Psychology Behind Antisocial Behavior in Children and Adolescents.

Antisocial Personality Disorder (ASPD) is a complex and often debilitating condition that can emerge from early behavioral disturbances in childhood and adolescence. This narrative review provides a comprehensive overview of the current understanding of ASPD in pediatric and adolescent populations, examining key diagnostic challenges, developmental trajectories, and emerging treatment approaches. Recent research underscores the critical role of the early identification of conduct disorder (CD) and oppositional defiant disorder (ODD) as precursors to ASPD. Specific attention is given to biologi

Symptoms of ADHD, antisocial behavior, and cognitive performance: A longitudinal twin study.

We investigated longitudinal associations between adolescent attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) symptoms and later antisocial behavior and tested 1) whether these associations are independent of familial factors shared by co-twins and 2) whether cognitive performance moderates the associations. In a population-based sample of Finnish twins (N = 602-1330, 53% female), we assessed ADHD symptoms with teacher assessments and a diagnostic interview in adolescence, symptoms of antisocial personality disorder with a diagnostic interview in young adulthood, and criminal behavior across th

Linking Brain Morphometry to Psychometric Measures and Energy-Metabolic Biomarkers in Adults With Autism Spectrum Disorder.

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is associated with differences in neurodevelopment and altered metabolism, yet the interplay between brain morphometry, mitochondrial and energy metabolism biomarkers, and autistic traits in adults remains poorly understood. This study investigates the link between brain structure, psychometric measures, and both central and peripheral metabolic biomarkers in adults with ASD. We studied 145 adults, including 74 with ASD and 71 control participants (CON) using high-resolution 3-Tesla MRI to assess cortical thickness, subcortical and global brain volumes. Central e

Algorithm for the Retrospective Diagnostic Assessment of ICD-10, ICD-11, and DSM-5 ADHD Symptoms in Primary School Reports Abstract: According to the German S3 guideline, diagnosing attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) requires evidence of symptom onset during childhood. This poses a particular challenge when assessing adolescents and young adults. Primary school reports can provide valuable information about earlier patterns of work and social behavior, thereby allowing a retrospective assessment of ADHD-related symptoms - specifically inattention, impulsivity, and hyperactivity. Safety of acetaminophen use in pregnancy: review of existing evidence.

Acetaminophen is the most widely used antipyretic and analgesic medication in pregnancy, but recent concerns have challenged its reproductive safety. Review articles and regulatory advisories have highlighted associations between prenatal acetaminophen exposure and adverse neurodevelopmental outcomes, including autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD); reproductive issues; and endocrine abnormalities. This review examines the biological plausibility, epidemiological evidence, and methodological limitations underlying observed associations. Systematic r

Adolescents' Strategies to Manage Mental Health Challenges In and After the Pandemic: Two Mixed-Methods Studies.

Identifying the strategies adolescents use to manage mental health challenges can offer important insights into factors protecting against more severe difficulties. Yet little is known about adolescent-specific strategies to manage these challenges. To address this gap, we created an innovative online tool in which adolescents could share how they manage specific mental health challenges, that is, symptoms of hyperactivity/inattention, conduct problems, and emotional problems, and in which they could rate perceived helpfulness of their strategies. The first study, during the pandemic, investig

Mediating effect of depression on the association between inattention or hyperactivity with the severity of substance dependence: the role of self-efficacy.

Substance use disorder (SUD) is a significant public health issue impacting millions of people worldwide. Many mental health disorders are often comorbid with SUD, and they can influence its severity. The aim of this study was to examine the relationship of adult attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) symptoms, depressive symptoms, the level of self-efficacy and the severity of SUD. This study analyzed data from 117 participants with SUD. The severity of SUD, ADHD symptoms, depressive symptoms, and self-efficacy were measured. A moderated mediation model was used to evaluate the effec

Neurodevelopmental Disorders, Cognitive Function, and Quality of Life in Children with Congenital Hypothyroidism in a Portuguese Population.

OBJECTIVE: Although neonatal screening programs have reduced severe intellectual disability, children with congenital hypothyroidism (CH) are still at risk for neurodevelopmental deficits and a lower quality of life (QoL). The aim of this study was to evaluate cognitive profiles, prevalence of neurodevelopmental disorders, and QoL in children with CH. METHODS: A longitudinal study was conducted at the northern reference endocrinology unit for CH in Portugal. Cognitive assessments were performed at four time points using standardized intelligence scales. Diagnoses of attention deficit hyperact

Adolescent eating behaviours: associations with autistic and ADHD traits in childhood and the mediating role of anxiety.

BACKGROUND: Autistic individuals and individuals with ADHD are more likely to experience eating disorders, yet the reasons for this are not well understood. We investigated whether childhood neurodivergent (i.e. autistic and ADHD) traits are associated with patterns of emotional/restrained eating and externally driven eating behaviours in adolescence, whether these associations differed by sex and if they are mediated by anxiety. METHODS: We tested the association between parent-reported childhood (age 7 years) autistic and ADHD (i.e. hyperactivity/impulsivity, inattention) traits and self-re
