Biological network exploration with Cytoscape 3.

Cytoscape is one of the most popular open-source software tools for the visual exploration of biomedical networks composed of protein, gene, and other types of interactions. It offers researchers a versatile and interactive visualization interface for exploring complex biological interconnections supported by diverse annotation and experimental data, thereby facilitating research tasks such as predicting gene function and constructing pathways. Cytoscape provides core functionality to load, visualize, search, filter, and save networks, and hundreds of Apps extend this functionality to address

Understanding and utilising mammalian venom via a platypus venom transcriptome.

Only five mammalian species are known to be venomous, and while a large amount of research has been carried out on reptile venom, mammalian venom has been poorly studied to date. Here we describe the status of current research into the venom of the platypus, a semi-aquatic egg-laying Australian mammal, and discuss our approach to platypus venom transcriptomics. We propose that such construction and analysis of mammalian venom transcriptomes from small samples of venom gland, in tandem with proteomics studies, will allow the identification of the full range of mammalian venom components. Decolonizing Indigenous health: Generating a productive dialogue to eliminate Rheumatic Heart Disease in Australia.

In common with colonized Indigenous people worldwide, many Australian Aboriginal people experience inequitable health outcomes. While the commitment and advocacy of researchers and health practitioners has resulted in many notable improvements in policy and practice, systemic and structural impediments continue to restrain widespread gains in addressing Indigenous health injustices. We take Rheumatic Heart Disease (RHD), a potent marker of extreme health inequity, as a case study, and critically examine RHD practitioners' perspectives regarding the factors that need to be addressed to improve

AIDS and the Untenable Animal Model: The Cost and Ethics of U.S. HIV/AIDS Research with Chimpanzees, 1983-2000.

As AIDS activists voiced their demands for "drugs into bodies" in the late 1980s, American scientists injected drugs into the body of a high … mal that had been a promising AIDS model became a public relations headache and a major expense for biomedical research. The pushback to the use of chimpanzees in AIDS research helps scholars understand how American scientists, activists, and animal advocates have made sense of the enmeshed concerns of human and animal welfare in a time of epidemiological crisis.

Automated methods for multi-isotopic analysis of major cations in biological samples: application to chronic kidney disease of unknown etiology.

Natural variability in stable isotope ratios provides critical constraints on elemental cycling in nature without the need for the introduction of artificial tracers. While such data are widely used in environmental studies, they are not as widely employed in biomedical research, despite vast potential. One critical hurdle to the adoption of such techniques in biomedical studies is sample throughput. Elemental purification via ion-exchange chromatography and isotopic analysis via multiple collector inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (MC-ICP-MS) are time-consuming, requiring long hour…

Orthopaedics and Biomedical Engineering Design: An Innovative Duet toward a Better Tomorrow.

The main purpose of this article is to explore the benefits and dynamics of collaborations between orthopaedic surgeons and biomedical engineering (BME) undergraduates and faculties in the context of engineering design programs as well as clinical immersion programs. An outline of strategies to navigate the seemingly complex landscape of hospitals and universities is presented through models of orthopaedic-BME collaborations at two distinct academic practice settings in the United States. In addition to (four) examples of BME design projects sponsored by the clinicians, funding and intellectua

Development of immunological reagents for the identification of biomarkers of inflammation in the common marmoset.

Marmosets (MAR, Callithrix jacchus) are nonhuman primates extensively studied in a broad array of preclinical biomedical research areas. However, the limited number of available immunological reagents remains a critical shortcoming of these models. We successfully developed monoclonal antibodies (mAbs) pairs that can be used in immunoassays for the identification and quantification of the biomarkers of inflammation C-reactive protein (CRP), CXCL-10 (IP-10), interleukin (IL)-4, IL-6, and IL-10. Recombinant MAR protein variants were produced in mammalian cells, purified and used for mice immuniz…

Multifunctional Metal-Coordinated Hydrogels: Controlled Synthesis and Advances in Anti-Inflammatory, Anticancer, and Antibacterial Applications.

Hydrogels possess exceptional biocompatibility and have therefore been widely utilized in biomedical applications. However, their broader development is often constrained by limited intrinsic functionality and inadequate dynamic responsiveness. Metal complexes offer a promising solution to these limitations by introducing dynamic coordination interactions, catalytic properties, and multi-stimuli responsiveness, enabling new avenues for hydrogel functionalization. This review begins with a systematic examination of four principal strategies for integrating metal complexes into hydrogel matrices

Study on the preparation of sterile noble metal nanoparticles and hydrotalcite layered nanoparticles by innovative high pressure sterilization method.

We have developed an innovative nanoparticle preparation technique. It utilised a high-pressure steam sterilisation pot as the reaction equipment, simplifying biomedical nanoparticle synthesis and sterilisation processes. Gold nanoparticles (AuNPs), silver nanoparticles (AgNPs), and two types of hydrotalcite-layered nanoparticles (LDHs) were prepared successfully. The nanoparticles had a regular morphology and good dispersion, which is consistent with the characteristics of products prepared using traditional methods. The average particle sizes of AuNPs and AgNPs were 25 and 38 nm. Ultraviolet

Mechanisms of solid lipid nanoparticles-triggered signaling pathways in eukaryotic cells.

Solid lipid nanoparticles (SLN) are used in various fields such as pharmaceutical, cosmetic, and biomedical research and show promising results in delivering biomolecules. SLN formulations are made with solid lipids (at room and body temperature) stabilized with surfactants and co-surfactants that may guarantee specific properties. Typically, these compounds have high stability, allow large-scale production, and are biodegradable. Since most of these SLNs are formulated with biodegradable materials, they are assumed to have low toxicity or are nontoxic. Therefore, this assumption introduced ex…
