Persistent left superior vena cava (PLSVC) is the most common congenital cardiac anomaly occurring in around 0.4% of the general population, and 1.3-4.5% in those with additional cardiac defects. Eighty-two percent of PLSVC coexists with a right superior vena cava. Usually PLSVC is asymptomatic, but can cause difficulties during central venous cannulation from the left side. There are a few cases of brain abscess in the literature associated with PLSVC. Here, we describe a patient of brain abscess with PLSVC in the intensive care unit of King Faisal Hospital, Makkah, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.

We report the case of a 59-year-old female presenting an ocular ischemic syndrome caused by occlusion of the internal carotid artery. MRI showed multiple previous episodes of stroke. Therapy consisted in stopping the antihypertensive medication in order to stabilize the residual cerebral perfusion pressure and initiating statin and antiaggregant therapy.

Many patients with psychiatric disorders are refractory to current treatments, prompting a search for novel therapies. Based on the efficacy of electroconvulsive therapy, there is interest in developing other brain stimulation methods in psychiatry. Alternatives include vagal nerve stimulation, repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation and deep brain stimulation. This paper reviews these methods, highlighting strategies currently being used and developed at Washington University and Barnes-Jewish Hospital in St. Louis.

Neuromyelitis optica (NMO) is a demyelinating disease consisting of relapsing-remitting optic neuritis and myelitis with a more severe course than Multiple Sclerosis. Recently, it has been shown that almost 50% of patients with NMO can have brain magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) abnormalities. We report on six Brazilian patients with NMO, fulfilling the 1999 Wingerchuck criteria for this disease, with abnormal brain MRI and discuss their clinical and radiological features.
