[Attachment Based Short Intervention During Inpatient Treatment of Adolescents].

Attachment Based Short Intervention During Inpatient Treatment of Adolescents In clinical attachment research the established and economic Adult Attachment Projective Picture System (AAP) has been increasingly used in the past few years to assess the attachment representations in adults and recent studies demonstrated sufficient validity for assessing attachment representations in adolescents. Apart from coding attachment classifications, the AAP provides useful and clinically valid information concerning attachment related defences, aspects of capacity to act and synchrony in relationships an

Lamotrigine in the treatment of binge-eating disorder with obesity: a randomized, placebo-controlled monotherapy trial.

This study evaluated the efficacy and safety of lamotrigine in binge-eating disorder (BED) associated with obesity. Fifty-one outpatients with BED by Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, fourth edition criteria, and obesity were randomized to receive either lamotrigine (N=26) or placebo (N=25) in a 16-week, double-blind, flexible-dose study. Lamotrigine (236+/-150 mg/day) and placebo had similar rates of reduction of weekly frequency of binge-eating episodes and binge days, weight and BMI, measures of eating pathology, obsessive-compulsive symptoms, impulsivity, and global se

Loss of control is central to psychological disturbance associated with binge eating disorder.

OBJECTIVE: Binge eating disorder (BED) is positively associated with obesity and psychological distress, yet the behavioral features of BED that drive these associations are largely unexplored. The primary aim of this study was to investigate which core behavioral features of binge eating are most strongly related to psychological disturbance. METHODS AND PROCEDURES: A cross-sectional study involved 180 bariatric surgery candidates, 93 members of a non-surgical weight loss support group, and 158 general community respondents (81 men/350 women, mean age 45.8 +/- 13.3, mean BMI 34.8 +/- 10.8, B

Double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled trial of topiramate plus cognitive-behavior therapy in binge-eating disorder.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the efficacy and tolerability of adjunctive topiramate compared to placebo in reducing weight and binge eating in obese patients with binge-eating disorder (BED) receiving cognitive-behavior therapy (CBT). METHOD: A double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled trial of 21 weeks' duration was conducted at 4 university centers. Participants were 73 obese (body mass index >or= 30 kg/m(2)) outpatients with BED (DSM-IV criteria), both genders, and aged from 18 to 60 years. After a 2- to 5-week run-in period, selected participants were treated with group CBT (19 sessions) and

Association of Nesfatin-1, Acylated Ghrelin and Cortisol with Scores of Compulsion, Food Addiction, and Binge Eating in Adults with Normal Weight and with Obesity.

BACKGROUND/AIMS: The alterations of eating behavior are insufficiently recognized in the clinical attention of adults with obesity. The objective of this study was to examine the characteristics of overeating behavior and its association with depression, perceived stress, acylated ghrelin, nestafin-1, and cortisol. METHODS: This cross-sectional comparative study included 80 participants with obesity and 50 with normal weight. The volunteers completed questionnaires to evaluate symptoms of food addiction (FA), obsessive compulsive, binge eating (BE), depression, and perceived stress. We measur

Lack of efficacy of psychological and pharmacological treatments of disorders of eating behavior: neurobiological background.

BACKGROUND: Treatments of eating disorders result too often in partial psychological and physical remission, chronicization, dropout, relapse and death, with no fully known explanations for this failure. In order to clarify this problem, we conducted three studies to identify the biochemical background of cognitive-behavioural psychotherapy (CBT), individual psychology brief psychotherapy (IBPP), and psychotherapy-pharmacotherapy with CBT + olanzapine in anorexics (AN) and bulimics (BN) by measuring the levels of plasma homovanillic acid (HVA) for dopamine secretion, plasma 3-methoxy-4-hydroxy

Prenatal choline supplementation mitigates behavioral alterations associated with prenatal alcohol exposure in rats.

BACKGROUND: Prenatal alcohol exposure can alter physical and behavioral development, leading to a range of fetal alcohol spectrum disorders. Despite warning labels, pregnant women continue to drink alcohol, creating a need to identify effective interventions to reduce the severity of alcohol's teratogenic effects. Choline is an essential nutrient that influences brain and behavioral development. Recent studies indicate that choline supplementation can reduce the teratogenic effects of developmental alcohol exposure. The present study examined whether choline supplementation during prenatal eth

Pre- and postsurgery behavioral compliance, patient health, and postbariatric surgical weight loss.

This study investigated the relationship between weight loss from gastric bypass surgery, patient characteristics, and compliance with physician instructions before and after surgery. A chart review of psychiatric and medical files was conducted for an initial cohort of 172 patients in a postsurgical management program. A total of 112 patients (primarily women (85%), white (79%), and well educated) from this cohort had presurgical data. Of these 112 subjects, 67 (60%) had postsurgical compliance information and BMI at 24 months postsurgery. The relationships between weight loss and a number of

Paraventricular opioids alter intake of high-fat but not high-sucrose diet depending on diet preference in a binge model of feeding.

Previous work from our laboratory indicates that when rats are given a choice between a high-fat and a high-sucrose diet, opioid blockade with naltrexone (NTX) in a reward-related site (central amygdala) inhibits intake of the preferred diet only, whereas NTX injected into a homeostasis-related site, such as the hypothalamic paraventricular nucleus (PVN), inhibits intake of both diets. However, other work suggests that opioids increase intake of fat specifically. The present study further investigates the role of PVN opioids in food choices made by calorically-replete animals. We used a binge

Artificially Sweetened Beverages Beyond the Metabolic Risks: A Systematic Review of the Literature.

We carried out a review of the available literature on the effects that artificially sweetened beverages (ASBs) such as diet soda (DS) have on health, particularly those not related to incident diabetes mellitus, obesity, and metabolic syndrome. A search of scientific articles was carried out using 11 different databases: PubMed, Cochrane, LILACS, MEDLINE Ovid, JAMA Network, IBECS, Cumed, Scopus, SciELO, MEDLINE-EBSCO, and Taylor & Francis Online. Articles published in the last 10 years were considered, considering cross-sectional studies, retrospective or prospective cohort studies, case-cont

GABAB receptor signaling in the caudate putamen is involved in binge-like consumption during a high fat diet in mice.

Previous studies suggest that signaling by the gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) type B receptor (GABABR) is involved in the regulation of binge eating, a disorder which might contribute to the development of obesity. Here, we show that intermittent access to a high fat diet (HFD) induced binge-like eating behavior with activation of dopamine receptor d1 (drd1)-expressing neurons in the caudate putamen (CPu) and nucleus accumbens (NAc) in wild-type (WT) mice. The activation of drd1-expressing neurons during binge-like eating was substantially increased in the CPu, but not in the NAc, in corticost

Dopamine for "wanting" and opioids for "liking": a comparison of obese adults with and without binge eating.

Obesity research suffers from an overinclusion paradigm whereby all participants with a BMI beyond a certain cutoff value (e.g., 30) are typically combined in a single group and compared to those of normal weight. There has been little attempt to identify meaningful subgroups defined by their salient biobehavioral differences. In order to address this limitation, we examined genetic and psychological indicators of hedonic eating in obese adults with (n=66) and without (n=70) binge eating disorder (BED). Our analyses focused on dopamine (DA) and opioid genetic markers because of their conjoint
