Performance and potency of tetanus toxoid: implications for eliminating neonatal tetanus.

Neonatal tetanus (NT) is a major cause of mortality in developing countries, with over 400,000 deaths estimated to occur annually. WHO has adopted the goal of eliminating NT worldwide, and a major strategy for its prevention is the administration of at least two properly spaced doses of tetanus toxoid (TT) to women of childbearing age in high-risk areas to protect passively their newborns at birth. In certain countries the locally produced TT vaccine has been shown to be subpotent, while other countries have reported NT among infants born to vaccinated women. An extensive review of production …

Current food and nutrition situation in south Asian and south-east Asian countries.

Food production in the countries of South and South-East Asia has shown a general upward trend during the last decade. Despite the considerable increase in population in many of these countries, food production per capita in 1988-90 was significantly higher as compared to 1979-81 figures, the increase being specially marked in such countries as Vietnam, Cambodia, Indonesia, and Malaysia. Available daily calorie supply was adequate to meet the requirement. The overall pattern of food production however has shown little change, with cereal production continuing to account for a predominant part

Comparison of three DOT-ELISA techniques in diagnosing Schistosoma haematobium infection.

The DOT-STRIP-ELISA was evaluated in the laboratory as a serodiagnostic tool for Schistosoma haematobium infection in order to assess the potential of introducing the technique under field conditions in the developing world. Out of 100 individuals with parasitologically confirmed Schistosoma haematobium, 87 reacted positively (sensitivity 87%), whereas 45 out of 50 sera from individuals from a non-endemic area reacted negatively (specificity 90%). Results were reproducible. Cross-reactions were observed with sera from individuals infected with Schistosoma mansoni, Echinococcus, Leishmania and

Hypokalaemic paralysis precipitated by working in hot weather.

Twenty-two cases of hypokalaemic paralysis seen over the past 7 years, are presented here. They included five Chinese, five Bangladeshis, six Arabs, four Philippinos and two Indians. The number of cases related to the population of each nationality in our area showed that the Chinese had the biggest number of cases in relation to their population in our area, followed by Philippinos then Bangladeshis. All patients were men admitted in the hot season, dehydrated and not able to walk. It seems that dehydration was an important precipitating factor in our cases. Although family history was positi

Castleman's disease in children: the experience of a children's hospital in Africa.

As the incidence of childhood Castleman's disease (CD) is reported to be rare in Western communities, the recent occurrence of three cases in non-HIV infected prepubertal children stimulated a 10-year (1983-1993) retrospective investigation into the conditions at a children's hospital that serves a predominantly developing community. Retrospective histologic examination revealed six cases of CD among children 3-11 years of age and another five probable cases having histological features of CD without adequate clinical and laboratory data. Three CD cases were associated with malignancy (Kaposi'

Towards the elimination of iodine deficiency disorders in India.

Iodine deficiency disorders (IDD) are an important public health problem in India with an estimated 270 million people at risk of IDD. India has adopted the strategy of salt iodization for control of IDD and has the goal of "Universal iodization of salt by 1995 and elimination of IDD by 2000". There is a high degree of political commitment which need to continue if the goal is to be achieved. Currently the ban on ale of un-iodized salt is only applicable to salt on human consumption. There is a need for extending the ban to include salt for animal consumption as IDD affects livestock as well.

Geohelminth infections in school-aged children in Jamaica.

There is concern that geohelminthiasis may adversely affect the growth and development of children. The relevance of this in the Caribbean is unclear since in many territories the prevalence of geohelminths is unknown. We report the results of three surveys conducted in Jamaican primary schools located in areas at high risk for geohelminthiasis. The first was conducted in 12 Kingston schools and comprised children in grades 2 to 5 (aged 7 to 10 years). The second and third surveys were conducted in rural areas with children in grades 2 to 5 and grades 4 and 5, respectively. Overall, 9244 child

Relationship between AIDS and family planning programmes: a rationale for developing integrated reproductive health services.

This paper examines the potential links between family planning and maternal and child health programmes and the emerging needs of the global AIDS epidemic; and assesses the feasibility of organizing comprehensive reproductive health programmes in developing countries to include the prevention and control of reproductive tract infections including sexually transmitted infections as well as HIV/AIDS. The paper discusses arguments opposing the integration of programmes against sexually transmitted infections within family planning and MCH programmes, as well as the programmatic and epidemiologic…

Study of glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD) in the Kissan tribals of Orissa and the Kannikar tribals of Kerala, India.

G6PD deficiency has been studied in two tribal populations: Kissan tribals of Orissa and Kannikar tribals of Nedumungad Taluk, Trivandrum, Kerala. The percentage frequencies of G6PD deficiency are 14.13% and 5.5%, respectively. The two areas have a different pattern with respect to malarial infection. The Orissa one is an endemic malaria zone, while the Kerala one is less malarious. This is very well reflected by the frequency distribution of G6PD deficiency.
