Patterns and association between smokeless tobacco consumption and hemoglobin level among 6 to 12 years children: analytical cross-sectional study : Association between smokeless tobacco use and hemoglobin in rural Pakistani children.

INTRODUCTION: Smokeless tobacco (SLT) use is a growing and significant public health issue in low- and middle-income countries. SLT consumption impairs nutrient absorption, particularly iron, leading to poor nutritional status and reduced hemoglobin levels. The study aimed to assess the association between SLT consumption and hemoglobin levels (Hb) among 6 to 12-year-old school-going children in rural Matiari, Pakistan. METHODS: An analytical cross-sectional study was conducted over 40 days (August-September 2024) in four schools in Matiari, Pakistan. Children aged 6-12 years from classes I-V

Prevalence and determinants of inappropriate complementary feeding practices among children aged 6-23 months in Chiang Mai, Northern Thailand: a cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Inappropriate complementary feeding (CF) increases the risk of the triple burden of malnutrition, including undernutrition, micronutrient deficiencies, overweight and obesity. Chiang Mai, a major city in northern Thailand, is experiencing rapid urbanization and growing cultural diversity driven by tourism, which may influence CF practices. However, data on these practices remain limited, emphasizing the need for context-specific interventions. METHODS: A cross-sectional study involving 1,122 caregivers of children aged 6-23 months was conducted between January and May 2024. Data w

Does seasonal variation in the corticosterone response affect the nutritional ecology of a free-ranging lizard?

Challenging events in the environment that are both predictable (e.g. seasonal patterns in breeding activities) and unpredictable (e.g. predator encounter) are known to induce a glucocorticoid response that facilitates metabolic requirements during the challenge. Given its role in mobilizing energy, glucocorticoid levels can influence the nutritional ecology of an individual by shifting dietary intake or retention patterns, but this relationship has not been tested in free-ranging vertebrates. Using a tropical lizard species (Psammophilus dorsalis) as a model system, we tested whether the elem

Feeding Difficulties in Children with Hepatic Glycogen Storage Diseases Identified by a Brazilian Portuguese Validated Screening Tool.

Background/Objectives: Hepatic glycogen storage diseases (GSDs) are inherited metabolic disorders that affect glycogen synthesis or breakdown, primarily involving the liver and muscles. Treatment typically consists of strict dietary management, including the consumption of uncooked cornstarch. However, there is limited research on feeding challenges and the associated stress experienced by parents of children with GSDs. This study aims to assess feeding difficulties in children with GSDs and the level of parental stress. Methods: A total of 29 caregivers of children aged 6 months to <7 years p

Phytophagous, blood-suckers or predators? Automated identification of Chagas disease vectors and similar bugs using convolutional neural network algorithms.

Correct identification of blood-sucking bugs, such as triatomines, is important because they are vectors of Chagas' disease. Identifying these insects is often difficult for non-specialists. Deep learning is emerging as a solution for automated identification. This study evaluates the performance of three convolutional neural networks (CNNs) - AlexNet, MobileNetV2 and ResNet-50 - to identify bugs categorized by their feeding habits: 'blood-suckers', 'phytophagous' and 'predators'. A dataset of 707 dorsal view pictures was divided into training, validation, and test subsets (70 %, 10 %, and 20

Modeling Life History Parameters in Marine Mammals: Bayesian Hierarchical Analysis of Ontogenetic Dietary Shifts in Indo-Pacific Humpback Dolphins.

AbstractWeaning represents a pivotal ontogenetic process for mammals, marking the transition from parental provisioning to independent foraging. In monophyodont species, distinct growth layer groups that are deposited in their teeth as the animals age represent a permanent chronological archive of physiological events across the animals' lifetimes. Thus, biochemical analysis of annual dentine increments provides a means to explore animal physiological history. We examined the age-specific pattern, individual-level variations, and sex-related differences in dentine nitrogen isotopic values in t

Biting time of day in malaria mosquitoes is modulated by nutritional status.

BACKGROUND: Transmission of vector-borne pathogens follows daily rhythms, occurring at the time of day that vectors forage for blood. Control measures, such as insecticide-treated bed nets (ITNs), have been particularly successful for reducing malaria transmission because they exploit the nocturnal biting behaviour of the Anopheles spp. that vector malaria. However, shifts in biting behaviour to earlier or later hours when people are unprotected can undermine the efficacy of ITNs. Despite the implications for malaria transmission, the mechanisms underlying these shifts remain poorly understood

Effectiveness of a Parent-Based eHealth Intervention for Physical Activity, Dietary Behavior, and Sleep Among Preschoolers: Protocol for a Randomized Controlled Trial.

BACKGROUND: Preschoolers' lifestyles have become physically inactive and sedentary, their eating habits have become unhealthy, and their sleep routines have become increasingly disturbed. Parent-based interventions have shown promise to improve physical activity (PA), improve dietary behavior (DB), and reduce sleep problems among preschoolers. However, because of the recognized obstacles of face-to-face approaches (eg, travel costs and time commitment), easy access and lower costs make eHealth interventions appealing. Previous studies that examined the effectiveness of parent-based eHealth for

Eating Speed Measurement Using Wrist-Worn IMU Sensors Towards Free-Living Environments.

Eating speed is an important indicator that has been widely investigated in nutritional studies. The relationship between eating speed and several intake-related problems such as obesity, diabetes, and oral health has received increased attention from researchers. However, existing studies mainly use self-reported questionnaires to obtain participants' eating speed, where they choose options from slow, medium, and fast. Such a non-quantitative method is highly subjective and coarse at the individual level. This study integrates two classical tasks in automated food intake monitoring domain: bi

Contributions of birds to the feeding of ticks at host community level: Effects of tick burden, host density and yearly fluctuations.

The eco-epidemiology of tick-borne diseases hinges on the abundance and distribution of hosts that sustain tick populations and the pathogens they carry. Research into the role of bird species in the feeding of Ixodes ricinus ticks, the primary tick species of veterinary and public health importance in Europe, remains scarce. This study endeavors to bridge these knowledge gaps by (i) assessing the density of feeding ticks (DFT) within a bird community to pinpoint species making substantial contributions, and (ii) exploring interannual variations in DFT over an extended timeline. Furthermore, w

An examination of frontal asymmetry in relation to eating in the absence of hunger and loss-of-control eating.

Loss-of-control (LOC) eating involves a subjective feeling that one cannot stop eating or control one's eating. Individuals with LOC eating may exhibit strong appetitive drives and weak inhibitory control, and these two opposing motivations have been related to EEG measurements of frontal asymmetry or lateralized frontal activation. The present study investigated whether frontal asymmetry is related to hedonic hunger, LOC eating severity and frequency, and eating in the absence of hunger (EAH) in the laboratory. Fifty-nine individuals participated in an ostensible taste study after resting-sta
