Variant Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (vCJD) was identified as a new disease in 1996. It was linked to infection with the bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE) agent although the epidemiological evidence for this was not strong, but later strain typing studies confirmed the association. The disease has affected predominantly young adults whose dietary and other characteristics are unexceptional compared to control groups, other than that all patients to date have been methoinine homozygous at codon 129 of the prion protein gene and the incidence has been about two times higher in the North of the

BACKGROUND: A major outbreak of epidemic dropsy occurred in Delhi, India, in August-September 1998, due to the consumption of contaminated mustard oil.
METHODS: The clinical data of 212 adult patients of epidemic dropsy who presented to our hospital is analysed.
RESULTS: Pitting pedal oedema (100%), skin erythema (75%), limb tenderness (63%), diarrhea (51%) and hepatomegaly (34%) were the prominent clinical manifestations observed in the patients. A method was developed for the determination of 7 tetracyclines in milk. Raw milk samples are defatted, acidified, and centrifuged to remove proteins, and the tetracyclines are specifically absorbed from the milk by chelation with metal ions bound to small Chelating Sepharose Fast Flow columns. The tetracyclines are removed from these columns with EDTA-containing buffer, and the extracts are further cleaned up by centrifugal ultrafiltration. BACKGROUND: Ciguatera fish poisoning is a distinctive clinical syndrome associated with the consumption of contaminated marine fish. It is endemic in many popular travel destinations, including the Caribbean and Pacific Islands, where travelers are at risk.
METHODS: Clinical review of 23 patients (60% were travelers) with ciguatera fish poisoning in whom consultation was provided between 1987 and 1990.
RESULTS: Seven patients acquired ciguatera fish poisoning during international travel to the following destinations: Bahamas (n = 4), Dominican Republic (n = 1), British Virgin Islands (n = 1)

Corn from an Arkansas farm, where three horses died and others became sick, was investigated for causative principles. Necropsy of the three horses revealed what appeared to be severe hepatic necrosis. Histopathological examination indicated a pattern of hepatic lesions that was suggestive of aflatoxin contamination of the feed. Mycological examination of the corn by dilution plating revealed 95% of the colonies as Aspergillus flavus. In an experiment to determine the effect of corn vs. grain sorghum on performance of laying hens, egg production decreased significantly in the grain sorghum-fed hens in each of two trials starting 24 weeks after the trials began. Necropsy of chickens fed both diets revealed buccal ulceration at the ventral aspect of the oral cavity and squamous metaplasia of the esophageal glands and submaxillary salivary glands. A survey was carried out in 3 villages in Bali to determine the prevalence of taeniasis in humans and cysticercosis in pigs. A total of 548 people were examined and Taenia sp. eggs were found in the faeces of 11. Four individuals passed proglottids; two T. solium and two T. saginata and three of these people also passed eggs in the faeces. A total of 12 or 2.2% were infected.
