This special issue addresses the affective and cognitive processes and their interactions potentially reflecting mechanisms underlying the development, maintenance of, or recovery from behavioral addictions. Various specific types of behavioral addictions will be considered, including those already in ICD-11 (gambling disorder, gaming disorder), but also new phenomena that are not yet classified (e.g., buying-shopping disorder, social-network-disorder) and phenomena potentially belonging to behavioral addictions although they are currently classified elsewhere (e.g., compulsive sexual behavior

Neuroendocrine tumors (NETs) are benign tumors of the autonomic nervous system that rarely occur in the spinal canal. The gold standard treatment is gross total resection while preserving the patient's neurologic functioning as complete surgical resection is curative. The surgical management of NETs could pose a challenge given their friable consistency, hypervascular nature, and proclivity to adhere to the cauda equina nerve roots. We present a case of a 62-year-old female with an incidental primary NET arising from the filum terminale internum, review the literature, and describe the surgica

Radiogenomics, defined as the integrated analysis of radiologic imaging and genetic data, is a well-established tool shown to augment neuroimaging in the clinical diagnosis, prognostication, and scientific study of late-onset Alzheimer disease (LOAD). Early work using candidate single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) identified genetic variation in APOE, BIN1, CLU, and CR1 as key modifiers of brain structure and function using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). More recently, polygenic risk scores used in conjunction with MRI and positron emission tomography have shown great promise as a risk-st

Spinal Cord Injuries (SCI) lead to alterations in brain structure and brain function by direct effects of nerve damage, by secondary mechanisms, and also by longer term injury consequences such as paralysis and neuropathic pain. Here, we review neuroimaging studies of patients with traumatic spinal cord injuries, perform a quantitative meta-analysis of motor and motor imagery studies, summarize structural studies, evidence of cortical reorganization, and provide an overview of diffusion and spectroscopy studies. The meta-analysis showed significantly altered motor cortex, as well as cerebellar

There has been an increase in neuroimaging research in body dysmorphic disorder (BDD), yet little is known about the underlying neurobiological basis of the disorder. We aimed to provide a systematic overview of the literature on the neurobiology of BDD. Two reviewers undertook a search of three electronic research databases: PubMed, PsycINFO, and Google Scholar. The search consisted of synonyms commonly associated with BDD and methods to evaluate brain structure, function, and network organisation. Out of an initial yield of 175 articles, 19 fulfilled inclusion criteria and were reviewed. We

Neuro-Behçet disease (NBD) is a multisystem inflammatory disorder characterized by oral lesions, genital lesions, uveitis, and neurological deficits. If left untreated, it may lead to worsening neurological function and can be fatal. Here we present a case of a 52-year-old woman who was diagnosed with Behçet disease (BD) as a teenager and had a relatively mild disease course. Decades later after her initial DB diagnosis, she presented to our hospital with a chief complaint of headache. She did not have focal neurological deficits or any active mucosal lesions. Upon further investigation, the p

Blepharospasm (BSP) is a rather distressing form of focal dystonia. Although many aspects of its pathophysiological mechanisms are already known, we lack fundamental evidence on etiology, prevention, and treatment. To advance in our knowledge, we need to review what is already known in various aspects of the disorder and use these bases to find future lines of interest. Some of the signs observed in BSP are cause, while others are consequence of the disorder. Non-motor symptoms and signs may be a cue for understanding better the disease. Various cerebral sites have been shown to be functionall

There is growing interest in new neuroimage techniques that permit not only high-resolution quantification of cerebral blood flow velocity (CBFv) in capillaries, but also a large field of view to map the CBFv network dynamics. Such image capabilities are of great importance for decoding the functional difference across multiple cortical layers under stimuli. To tackle the limitation of optical penetration depth, we present a new ultrahigh-resolution optical coherence Doppler tomography (μODT) system at 1310 nm and compare it with a prior 800 nm μODT system for mouse brain 3D CBFv imaging. We s

Two patients with metabolic disorders presented with clinical and radiologic features suggestive of sporadic Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (sCJD). Case 1 was a 50-year-old man with rapid decline in cognitive, behavioral, and motor function following new-onset seizures. MRI was read as consistent with CJD, and he was referred for a treatment trial, but it was determined that he recently experienced rapid correction of hyponatremia resulting in extrapontine myelinolysis. Case 2 was a 66-year-old woman with poorly controlled diabetes mellitus who was found unconscious after a suspected insulin overdo

Electrophysiological correlates of voice processing were studied in twenty adults by comparing auditory evoked potentials in response to voice and environmental sounds in passive condition. Both categories of stimuli elicited similar cortical auditory responses (i.e. N1, P2, N2 peaks); however these peaks were overlapped by two components specifically elicited by voice. The first component was evidenced as a positive deflection recorded over the fronto-temporal sites, and lateralized on the right hemiscalp. This fronto-temporal positivity to voice (FTPV) may constitute the electrophysiological

Our understanding of the mechanisms of loss and recovery of consciousness, following severe brain injury or during anesthesia, is changing rapidly. Recent neuroimaging studies have shown that patients with chronic disorders of consciousness and subjects undergoing general anesthesia present a complex dysfunctionality in the architecture of brain connectivity. At present, the global hallmark of impaired consciousness appears to be a multifaceted dysfunctional connectivity pattern with both within-network loss of connectivity in a widespread frontoparietal network and between-network hyperconnec

Posterior reversible encephalopathy syndrome (PRES) is a clinicoradiographic entity of heterogenous etiologies, which are grouped together because of similar findings on neuroimaging studies, associated with similar symptom complex of headache, vision loss, altered mentation, and seizures. In this report, we describe a case of PRES in setting of postobstructive diuresis in a 5-year-old male child, whose solitary functioning kidney was obstructed by a 1.6-cm radio-opaque stone, who after percutaneous nephrostomy (PCN) diversion developed persistent hypocalcemia which persisted despite maximum r

The treatment and outcome of cervical dystonia (CD) with myelopathy (CDM) varies among studies. We retrospectively reviewed the clinical features, neuroimages, methods of treatment, and modified Rankin scale (mRS) score of patients with CDM in our hospital. There were seven male and three female patients, with a mean age of 53 years. The mean age at onset of CD was 24.9 years, with a mean interval from dystonia to the diagnosis with myelopathy of 28.1 years. The dominant level of cord compression was at C3/C4 in seven patients, C4/C5 in one patient, and C5/C6 in two patients. Four of five pati

Gilles de la Tourette syndrome (GTS) (MIM 137580) is a complex neuropsychiatric disorder probably originating from a disturbed interplay of several neurotransmitter systems in the prefrontal-limbic-basal ganglia loop. Polygenetic multifactorial inheritance has been postulated; nevertheless, no confirmed susceptible genes have been identified yet. As neuroimaging studies allude to dopaminergic and serotonergic dysfunction in GTS and serotonin as an important factor for dopamine release, genotyping of common polymorphisms in the serotonergic receptor (HTR1A: C-1019G; HTR2A: T102C, His452Tyr, A-1

Vascular cognitive impairment encompasses a spectrum of clinically defined syndromes ranging from vascular cognitive impairment-no dementia, to vascular dementia. The underlying cerebrovascular pathology includes both overt infarction as well as rarefaction of gray and white matter. Alzheimer's pathology may coexist with vascular pathology. Diagnosis rests on identifying acquired cognitive impairment in the setting of documented cerebrovascular disease, based on clinical presentation and neuroimaging; MRI is more sensitive than CT. The course can be stepwise or gradually progressive. The clini

Thrombocytopenia is one of the common manifestations of systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). Its treatment consists of corticosteroids and/or other immunosuppressive drug such as azathioprine, vincristine, cyclosporine, and mycophenolate mofetil. Common adverse reactions of immunosuppressive treatment are infections, hematologic and liver function abnormalities, but neurologic complications may also be seen. Reversible posterior leukoencephalopathy syndrome (RPLS) is a syndrome manifested by headache, nausea, vomiting, seizures, cortical blindness, and visual disturbances. Neuroimaging shows bi

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: This review of the more recent literature and testing strategies in patients with chiasmal syndromes focuses on the clinical evaluation and management of these patients. Visual loss is often the initial manifestation of disorders involving the optic chiasm. Hemianopic defects and preferential involvement of the temporal visual field are the earliest and most common visual deficits. Progression of the lesion may cause compression of adjacent structures, including the optic nerves and cavernous sinuses, and may result in more profound visual loss, ocular motor deficits, and hy

We present our experience with 83 patients with acoustic neurinomas (January 1988 to November 1996); 81 patients underwent surgery and 2 patients with intracanalicular neurinomas received conservative therapy due to their advanced age (1 case) and patient's option (1 case). The surgical approach was retrosigmoid/transmeatal and the goal was total removal in one procedure with preservation of facial and cochlear nerves. Radical removal of lesion was attempted in 79 cases and it was possible in 77 patients. Subtotal tumor resection was planned in 2 cases. Facial nerve function (grades I to III,

Photobiomodulation (PBM), particularly transcranial infrared laser stimulation (TILS), has emerged as a promising non-invasive method to enhance cognitive functions in healthy individuals and those with neuropsychiatric or neurodevelopmental disorders. Conventional pharmacotherapy often fails to improve cognition effectively and can produce adverse effects. In contrast, TILS of the prefrontal cortex modulates brain energy metabolism through mechanisms like mitochondrial upregulation, improved cerebral oxygenation, and enhanced neuroplasticity. This chapter synthesizes findings and insights fro
