Sexual Dimorphism in Cardiometabolic Diseases: From Development to Senescence and Therapeutic Approaches.

The global incidence and prevalence of cardiometabolic disorders have risen significantly in recent years. Although lifestyle choices in adulthood play a crucial role in the development of these conditions, it is well established that events occurring early in life can have an important effect. Recent research on cardiometabolic diseases has highlighted the influence of sexual dimorphism on risk factors, underlying mechanisms, and response to therapies. In this narrative review, we summarize the current understanding of sexual dimorphism in cardiovascular and metabolic diseases in the general

Gender differences in attentional blink in children with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder.

BACKGROUND: Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder(ADHD) is more prevalent in boys than girls. However, there was a larger proportion of girls displaying inattentive symptoms compared to boys. AIM: To investigate the gender differences in attentional blink in children with ADHD. METHOD: A total of 99 children in the ADHD group and 99 children in the typically developing children group were assessed. All children completed a dual-task rapid continuous visual presentation paradigm. RESULTS: The onset time of attentional blink in girls in the ADHD group was later than that in the typically d

Sex, hormones, and lung health.

Sex plays an essential role as a biological variable in lung health, leading to observed differences in lung disease susceptibility. Some respiratory conditions are more common in women than men, especially after puberty, indicating the influence of ovarian hormones on disease mechanisms. Other conditions display sex disparities that begin in utero and progress throughout the life span. Preclinical and clinical studies have indicated that both sex chromosomes and hormones can influence lung disease outcomes, immune responses, susceptibility to viral and bacterial infection, and responses to en

Sex and gender differences in neurological infections.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Neurological infections are a significant cause of morbidity and mortality. This review aims to summarize current insights and developments for sex and gender differences in the epidemiology, clinical presentation, and prognosis of neurological infections. RECENT FINDINGS: Sex refers to the biological and physiological factors that define males and females. Gender, on the other hand, refers to characteristics that are socially constructed. Both aspects are central to infectious disease pathogenesis, and clinical and scientific evidence of their relevance in neuroinfections

Shesha, a WhatsApp Chatbot for Linking Household Contacts to Tuberculosis Treatment or Preventive Therapy in South Africa: Design and Development.

BACKGROUND: Literature on the development of mobile health (mHealth) tools for public health interventions is scarce. This scarcity creates a knowledge gap, and new tools may repeat the mistakes of past implementations. OBJECTIVE: In this paper, we describe the development of Shesha, a WhatsApp-based chatbot designed to facilitate linkage to care for household contacts of people being treated for tuberculosis (TB). Shesha facilitates linkage by providing TB test results, TB preventive treatment (TPT) information, nudges, reminders, and personalized support. We developed Shesha to address the

Structural and functional sex differences in medial temporal lobe subregions at midlife.

BACKGROUND: Research has increasingly recognized sex differences in aging and Alzheimer's Disease (AD) susceptibility. However, sex effects on the medial temporal lobe (MTL), a crucial region affected by aging and AD, remain poorly understood when it comes to the intricacies of morphology and functional connectivity. This study aimed to systematically analyze structural and functional connectivity among MTL subregions, which are known to exhibit documented morphological sex differences, during midlife, occurring before the putative pivotal age of cerebral decline. The study sought to explore t

Sex differences in choroidal vessels using novel wide-field choroidal en-face images from optical coherence tomography.

This study aims to develop a method to quantify choroidal vessels in normal eyes using wide-field optical coherence tomography (OCT) en-face images. The study included participants with normal eyes in whom wide-angle OCT images were acquired to generate planarized choroidal en-face and thickness map images. The images were segmented into central, midperipheral, and peripheral areas, and the midperipheral and peripheral areas were further segmented into supratemporal, infratemporal, supranasal, and infranasal sectors. The mean planarized choroidal-vessel density (p-CVD), planarized choroidal-ve

Neighborhood-level economic characteristics and depression and PTSD symptoms among Houstonians who have experienced Hurricane Harvey and COVID-19.

Little is known about how neighborhood economic characteristics relate to risk of depression and Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) in the context of multiple disasters. We sampled 88 super neighborhoods in Houston, Texas and surveyed 872 residents who were living in Houston during Hurricane Harvey and COVID-19 and lived in the same residence since Hurricane Harvey, about their demographics and symptoms of depression and PTSD. Using data from the American Community Survey, we estimated neighborhood-level unemployment, median income, and income inequality (i.e., Gini coefficient). We investig

Sex and disease regulate major histocompatibility complex class I expression in human lung epithelial cells.

Major histocompatibility complex class I (MHC I) molecules present peptides to CD8+ T-cells for immunosurveillance of infection and cancer. Recent studies indicate lineage-specific heterogeneity in MHC I expression. While respiratory diseases rank among the leading causes of mortality, studies in mice have shown that lung epithelial cells (LECs) express the lowest levels of MHC I in the lung. This study aims to answer three questions: (i) Do human LECs express low levels of MHC I? (ii) Is LEC MHC I expression modulated in chronic respiratory diseases? (iii) Which factors regulate MHC I levels

Sex- and age-dependent impacts of nicotine and ethanol binge drinking on the brain: Insights from preclinical research.

Electronic cigarette use among adolescents is a growing concern, not only due to the high incidence of co-use with other substances, such as alcohol, but also due to the fact brain is still maturing during this period. Combined exposure to alcohol and nicotine leads to plastic adaptation of crucial circuits in the brain, which can contribute to the development of addiction. It is well established that nicotine exposure can facilitate alcohol binge drinking, and vice-versa, in a sex-, age- and exposure-dependent manner. Nonetheless, the central mechanisms underlying the synergistic relationship

Crowding-out effect of tobacco consumption in Indonesia.

BACKGROUND: Tobacco consumption is pervasive in Indonesia, with 6 out of 10 households in the country consuming tobacco. Smoking households, on average, divert a significant share (10.7%) of their monthly budget on tobacco products, which is higher than spending on staples, meat or vegetables. Nevertheless, evidence of the causal link between tobacco expenditure and spending on other commodities in Indonesia is limited. OBJECTIVE: This study aims to estimate the crowding-out effects of tobacco spending on the expenditure of other goods and services in Indonesia. METHOD: This research estimat

Determinants of self-rated health among highly educated Ukrainian women refugees in Czechia: analysis based on cross-sectional study in 2022.

BACKGROUND: Russia's military aggression against Ukraine set in motion a large number of refugees. Considerable amount of them came and stayed in Czechia. Refugees represent special vulnerable individuals often affected by war physically and psychologically. Due to the national regulations not allowing most of Ukrainian men aged 18-60 to leave the country, nowadays Ukrainian forced migration is relatively young and strongly gendered. Evidence suggests the higher probability for searching the safe refuge abroad among Ukrainian women with small children as well as those with relatively higher ec

Assessment of the relationship between living alone and suicidal behaviors based on prospective studies: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

Suicide, a global health concern, can be influenced by living arrangements. Hence, the objective of this systematic review was to assess the extent of the association between living alone and suicidal behaviors. We conducted a comprehensive search across eight databases for prospective studies. Hazard ratios (HR) and 95% confidence intervals were pooled using Stata software. Nine large-scale prospective studies with 3,663,205 participants proved eligible. The results of the meta-analysis showed that the pooled prevalence of living alone was 32%. Living alone was associated with suicide attempt

How does air pollution affect household consumption? Evidence from China.

Increasing air pollution not only affects the population's health but also changes its consumption structures and patterns. Using China Family Panel Studies, this study investigates the relationship between air pollution and household consumption. The findings reveal that household consumption is considerably affected by air pollution: One standard deviation rise of PM2.5 concentration will decrease the household consumption by 8.7%. Moreover, this effect is irreversible in the short term. What is more, air pollution has significantly changed consumption structure and patterns. Heterogeneous a

Deep learning models reveal replicable, generalizable, and behaviorally relevant sex differences in human functional brain organization.

Sex plays a crucial role in human brain development, aging, and the manifestation of psychiatric and neurological disorders. However, our understanding of sex differences in human functional brain organization and their behavioral consequences has been hindered by inconsistent findings and a lack of replication. Here, we address these challenges using a spatiotemporal deep neural network (stDNN) model to uncover latent functional brain dynamics that distinguish male and female brains. Our stDNN model accurately differentiated male and female brains, demonstrating consistently high cross-valida

Influences of sex and gender on the associations between risk and protective factors, brain, and behavior.

Risk and protective factors for psychiatric illnesses are linked to distinct structural and functional changes in the brain. Further, the prevalence of these factors varies across sexes and genders, yet the distinct and joint effects of sex and gender in this context have not been extensively characterized. This suggests that risk and protective factors may map onto the brain and uniquely influence individuals across sexes and genders. Here, we review how specific risk (childhood maltreatment, the COVID-19 pandemic, experiences of racism), and protective factors (social support and psychologic
