Single versus separate registration for computer-assisted lumbar pedicle screw placement.

STUDY DESIGN: This is a retrospective study conducted to evaluate the efficacy of single versus separate registration in assessing the pedicle screw accuracy in the computer-assisted lumbar spinal instrumentation. OBJECTIVES: To see if separate registration reduced lumbar pedicle screw misplacement. SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: Computer-assisted spinal instrumentation has been shown to improve pedicle screw installation accuracy, but 2.7% to 8% of screws still perforate the pedicular cortex. Suspected causes include differences in lumbar lordosis between preoperative CT scans and surgery. ME

Surgical treatment of condylar head fractures, the way to minimize the postraumatic TMJ ankylosis.

Management of condylar head fractures (CHF) of the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) remains a source of controversy. Based on established literature, group of CHFs and conservative treatment connected with period of maxillomandibular fixation (MMF) increases the risk for TMJ ankylosis. This paper presents anatomical and functional results of surgical treatment of condylar head fractures in a group of 24 patients (29 joints). Fractures were diagnosed based on conventional radiographs and computed tomography (CT) scans. Utilising an intraoperative arthroscopy authors evaluated actual intraarticular

The Influence of High-Impact Exercise on Cortical and Trabecular Bone Mineral Content and 3D Distribution Across the Proximal Femur in Older Men: A Randomized Controlled Unilateral Intervention.

Regular exercisers have lower fracture risk, despite modest effects of exercise on bone mineral content (BMC). Exercise may produce localized cortical and trabecular bone changes that affect bone strength independently of BMC. We previously demonstrated that brief, daily unilateral hopping exercises increased femoral neck BMC in the exercise leg versus the control leg of older men. This study evaluated the effects of these exercises on cortical and trabecular bone and its 3D distribution across the proximal femur, using clinical CT. Fifty healthy men had pelvic CT scans before and after the ex

A new definition for an old entity: improved definition of mitral valve prolapse using three-dimensional echocardiography and color-coded parametric models.

BACKGROUND: Differentiating between mitral valve (MV) prolapse (MVP) and MV billowing (MVB) on two-dimensional echocardiography is challenging. The aim of this study was to test the hypothesis that color-coded models of maximal leaflet displacement from the annular plane into the atrium derived from three-dimensional transesophageal echocardiography would allow discrimination between these lesions. METHODS: Three-dimensional transesophageal echocardiographic imaging of the MV was performed in 50 patients with (n = 38) and without (n = 12) degenerative MV disease. Definitive diagnosis of MVP v

Assessment of brain glucose metabolism with input function determined from brain PET images by means of Bayesian ICA and MCMC methods.

Positron emission tomography (PET) imaging has the capability to produce regional or parametric images of physiological aspects in a tissue of interest. Apart from the acquired PET data, the concentration of the radiotracer supplied to the tissue through the vascularization has to be known as the input function (IF). IF can be obtained by manual or automatic blood sampling and cross calibrated with PET. These procedures are cumbersome, invasive and generate uncertainties. In the present work, we determine IF from internal artery in fluorodeoxyglucose (18F-FDG) brain images by means of Independ
