BACKGROUND: Machado-Joseph disease (MJD) is characterized by cerebellar ataxia, pyramidal signs, progressive external ophthalmoplegia, and variable degrees of bulging eyes and dystonia. Electrophysiologic and histologic alterations of the peripheral nervous system in patients with MJD have rarely been reported.

AIM: A formula for calculating the minimum suppressive levothyroxine dose in prolonged suppression tests using body weight and TSH level is derived from a large number of cases.
METHOD: In 1239 euthyroid patients (TSH > 0.30 mU/l) a suppression test with levothyroxine substitution for at least 6 weeks was performed. The hormone dose was primarily based on the initial TSH level using the empirical value TSH x 100, with a range between 50 and 150 micrograms per day.

The authors assessed airway impedance responses to psychological stressors among 113 individuals: 61 with asthma only (AS), 10 with asthma and panic disorder (ASPD), 24 with panic disorder only (PD), and 18 controls with neither condition (CON). Individuals with either AS or PD were affected by psychological stressors as measured by the forced oscillation technique. Individuals with PD (with or without AS) displayed lower airway impedance than those without PD. These data suggest that the airways of individuals with PD are in a chronic state of preparedness, which may promote hyperventilation.
