Histogenesis and Histomorphometric study of Human Fetal Small Intestine.

BACKGROUND: Intestine plays a major role for the normal growth of the fetus during the prenatal period. The process of the embryonic development is not quantified histologically. Therefore the main aim of the study was to measure the thickness of all part of the wall of the small intestine that are mucosa, submucosa and muscularis externa and to look for the appearance of the Brunner's glands and Peyer's patches in the submucosa of duodenum and ileum. METHODS: The present study was carried out on 30 fetuses of gestational ages ranging from 11-36 weeks. Ten fetuses from each trimester were use

Intestinal ischemia due to methamphetamine use: A case report.

INTRODUCTION: Methamphetamine use is a rare cause of intestinal ischemia but is of clinical significance due to its high morbidity and mortality. Knowledge of methamphetamine-induced intestinal ischemia has been limited to few case reports. CASE PRESENTATION: We describe the case of a 48-year-old man who presented with ischemic bowel related to methamphetamine use. With concern for intestinal infarction the patient was taken to the operating room for emergency laparotomy, which found a segmental gangrene of small bowel and colon. The patient subsequently underwent right hemicolectomy and smal

Severe Anemia Is Associated with Intestinal Injury in Preterm Neonates.

OBJECTIVE: A temporal relationship has been reported between necrotizing enterocolitis, anemia, and red blood cell transfusion (RBCT) in preterm neonates. However, the mechanism underlying this association is not clearly defined. Intestinal (I-) and liver (L-) fatty acid binding proteins (FABPs) have been proposed as plasma markers for the detection of acute intestinal injury. This study aimed to investigate the effect of anemia and RBCT on intestinal injury in preterm neonates by measuring serum I-FABP and L-FABP levels. STUDY DESIGN: A prospective cohort study including preterm neonates wit

Median arcuate ligament syndrome as a cause of intestinal angina.

Median arcuate ligament syndrome (MALS) or celiac artery compression syndrome is caused by extrinsic compression by the median arcuate ligament. It is often asymptomatic, but it can cause intestinal symptoms suggestive of angina. We present a patient with repeated episodes of postprandial pain, nausea and occasional vomiting. After several studies, it was concluded that the symptomatology was attributable to this syndrome. Conservative treatment was performed due to the coexistence of underlying neoplastic disease and low life expectancy.

The correlation between intestinal dysbiosis and the development of ankylosing spondylitis.

The pathogenesis and development of ankylosing spondylitis (AS) is concealed and complicated. In recent years, alterations in gut microbiota of AS patients have been largely investigated, although the underlying mechanisms remain unclear. This article reviews the recent studies on changes of gut microbiota in AS patients, and discusses the possible correlation between intestinal dysbiosis and AS development from aspects including genetic factor HLA-B27, mucosal immune responses and the depression accompanying AS.

Current evidence for vitamin D in intestinal function and disease.

UNLABELLED: Vitamin D activity is associated with the modulation of a wide variety of biological systems, in addition to its roles in calcium homeostatic mechanisms. While vitamin D is well known to promote gastrointestinal calcium absorption, vitamin D also plays a role in attenuating and/or preventing the progression of several gastrointestinal diseases including Crohn’s disease, ulcerative colitis, and colorectal cancer, and may also play a role in chemotherapy-induced intestinal mucositis. The pro-differentiation, immunomodulatory, and anti-inflammatory effects of vitamin D, which has been

Management of Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth in Adult Patients.

The human gastrointestinal tract is a complex system of digestive pathways aided by mechanical processes, enzymes, transport molecules, and colonic bacteria. Occasionally, these bacterial components transplant to atypical locations due to various gastrointestinal imbalances or anatomical structural issues. This may lead to bacterial overgrowth of the small intestine, where minimal or no bacteria are normally found. Symptoms of small intestinal bacterial overgrowth may mimic those of various functional gastrointestinal diseases. Small intestinal bacterial overgrowth is typically diagnosed throu

N-acetylcysteine for Management of Distal Intestinal Obstruction Syndrome.

With the improving life expectancy of cystic fibrosis patients, new manifestations of the disease are emerging. Distal intestinal obstruction syndrome is one of the increasingly noted complications. Traditionally this syndrome was treated surgically. N-acetylcysteine is sometimes used as a non-surgical treatment option despite lack of definitive evidence for its efficacy and safety and not being mentioned in current treatment guidelines. The existing case reports suggest that N-acetylcysteine may have a place in therapy for older patients with incomplete distal intestinal obstruction syndrome

A case of feline primary duodenal carcinoid with intestinal hemorrhage.

A 15-year-old neutered male Persian cat was presented with recurrent hematemesis and melena. Abdominal ultrasonography and computed tomography revealed a mass in the proximal descending duodenal wall. Endoscopic examination revealed hemorrhage on the luminal side of the mass. Fine-needle aspiration of the mass was performed. Microscopic analysis revealed a cluster of cells with oval nuclei and indistinct cell borders, suggesting a neoplastic disease of neuroendocrine origin. The mass located near the major duodenal papilla was partially resected, and the bleeding was stopped by cauterization.

ILC2s-Trailblazers in the Host Response Against Intestinal Helminths.

Group 2 innate lymphoid cells (ILC2s) were first discovered in experimental studies of intestinal helminth infection-and much of our current knowledge of ILC2 activation and function is based on the use of these models. It is perhaps not surprising therefore that these cells have also been found to play a key role in mediating protection against these large multicellular parasites. ILC2s have been intensively studied over the last decade, and are known to respond quickly and robustly to the presence of helminths-both by increasing in number and producing type 2 cytokines. These mediators funct

A case of fatal disseminated strongyloidiasis accompanied with intestinal obstruction.

Strongyloides stercoralis is an endemic parasite in some regions including the tropical and subtropical areas with high humidity. Most infections are asymptomatic with nonspecific signs and symptoms, making the final diagnosis complicated. Here, we report a patient referred to our hospital with signs consistent with sepsis, intestine obstruction, which finally died with the diagnosis of strongyloidiasis. The patient was from northern parts of Iran which are considered as endemic areas for S. stercoralis. In conclusion, there is an important message in this history, i.e. physicians should be aw

One-year Incidence of Infection in Pediatric Intestine Transplantation.

BACKGROUND: This study reports the infection rate, location of infection and pathogen causing bacterial, fungal or viral infections in intestine transplant recipients at a pediatric transplant center. METHODS: Records from a pediatric center were reviewed for patients receiving an intestine transplant. Positive cultures and pathology reports were used to diagnose bacterial, fungal and viral infections and also to determine location and infectious agent. Risk for infection was assessed based on liver or colon inclusion, and immunosuppression induction, as part of the intestine transplant. RES

Survival and death of intestinal cells infected by Chlamydia trachomatis.

The sexually transmitted pathogen Chlamydia trachomatis (CT) is able to replicate and survive in human intestinal epithelial cells, being the gastro-intestinal tract a suitable site of residence for this microorganism. In this context, no detailed information about the mechanisms of cell death in intestinal cell lines after a chlamydial infection is available. The aim of this study was to compare the effect of two different CT serovars (D and L2) on the survival/death of different intestinal cell lines (Caco-2 and COLO-205), using endocervical cells (HeLa) as a reference model of genital infec

The role of the preterm intestinal microbiome in sepsis and necrotising enterocolitis.

Late-onset sepsis (LOS) and necrotising enterocolitis (NEC) account for the highest number of deaths in premature infants and often cause severe morbidity in survivors. NEC is an inflammatory mediated condition, but its pathophysiology remains poorly understood. There is increasing evidence that in LOS the causative organism most often translocates from the gut. No causative microorganism has been consistently associated with either LOS or NEC, but an aberrant gut microbiome development could play a pivotal role. A low bacterial diversity and a delay in anaerobic bacteria colonization may pred

Intestinal permeability determinants of norfloxacin in Ussing chamber model.

Recently, many efforts are taken to identify the intestinal uptake and efflux transporters since they are responsible for the absorption of many drugs as their interactions. Norfloxacin (NFX) is a fluoroquinolone that presents low solubility and low permeability, and as a consequence, low bioavailability. In this context, the aim of this study is evaluate for the first time the intestinal permeability mechanisms of NFX by Ussing chamber model. The low permeation of NFX at low temperature, where the efflux pumps are not active, reveals that NFX permeation is transporter-dependent. The permeatio
