Anxiety and erectile function in men with urological disease: a cross-sectional couple-based study.

AIM: This study examined psychological and clinical predictors of erectile function in men with urological conditions using a cross-sectional couple-based framework. METHODS: This cross-sectional secondary analysis included 109 men presenting with varicocele, erectile dysfunction as primary complaint, chronic prostatitis, or urinary stone disease, together with their partners. Male participants completed the International Index of Erectile Function-5 (IIEF-5), whereas both members of each couple completed the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale. They were classified using an IIEF-5 cut-off

Differences in Cervical Muscle Activity of Pilots and Nonpilots With and Without Neck Pain.

INTRODUCTION: Neck pain is common and often persistent, especially among military pilots exposed to high physical demands during flight. These conditions may alter neuromuscular control, contributing to chronic symptoms. While surface electromyography can detect pain-related changes in muscle activity, little is known about these patterns during low-load exercises in pilots. This study identifies differences in cervical muscle activity between pilots and nonpilots with and without neck pain. METHODS: A total of 18 military pilots and 23 control subjects were categorized into symptomatic and a

Polystyrene nanoplastics impair epithelial barrier establishment and modulate extracellular vesicle release in human bronchial cells cultured at the air-liquid interface.

The growing production of plastics has led to widespread environmental contamination by micro- and nanoplastics (MNPLs), raising increasing concern about their potential impact on human respiratory health. Among them, nanoplastics (NPs) can penetrate deeply into the lungs. However, their impact on human bronchial epithelial cells remains poorly characterized. Here, we assessed the effects of 40 nm polystyrene (PS)-NPs on human bronchial Calu-3 cells cultured at the air-liquid interface (ALI) during early epithelial establishment, a three-dimensional model representing a functionally immature o

Atherosclerosis as an evolutionary mismatch disease: from ancestral biology to cardiometabolic vulnerability.

A middle-aged patient with no cardiovascular history, modest cholesterol levels, and a normal stress test may already have extensive subclinical atherosclerosis across multiple vascular territories. Large imaging cohorts have shown that this scenario is far more common than conventional risk stratification would predict. Understanding why requires looking further back than conventional risk scores allow. Atherosclerosis is routinely framed as a disease acquired in adulthood through modifiable risk factors. That framing is clinically useful but biologically incomplete. Arterial lesions are dete

Bu Shen Huo Xue Formula ameliorates chronic kidney disease and suppresses NLRP3 inflammasome-mediated pyroptosis and renal fibrosis.

BACKGROUND: Bu Shen Huo Xue Formula (BSHX) is used in traditional Chinese medicine for chronic kidney disease (CKD), but its pharmacological mechanisms remain unclear. This study investigated whether effects of BSHX against CKD are associated with modulation of NLRP3 inflammasome-mediated pyroptosis and the inflammation-fibrosis axis. METHODS: BSHX constituents were characterized by UPLC-MS/MS. Network pharmacology and molecular docking were used to predict potential targets. CKD was induced in mice by unilateral nephrectomy with contralateral ischemia-reperfusion injury. Mice received low- o

PPAR-α Agonist Suppresses Expression of Immune Mediators in B Cells in a Murine Model of Systemic Lupus Erythematosus.

Background/Objectives: Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is a chronic autoimmune disorder characterized by immune dysregulation that leads to widespread inflammation and damage across multiple organs. B lymphocytes play a vital role in SLE, with abnormal development and activation leading to autoreactive antibody production and immune complex formation, which damages tissues. Methods: The PPARα agonist WY14643 has anti-inflammatory effects in various inflammatory conditions, including CNS diseases. We investigated whether WY14643 decreases inflammatory mediator production in CD45R+ cells in t

Distinct brain pathways link depressive symptoms due to respiratory dysfunction and reduced physical activity in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease: A single-center observational pilot study.

Mental health issues, such as depression, are increasingly recognized as critical comorbidities in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). While analyses of individual domains or pairwise relationships among airflow obstruction severity, brain morphological features, and mental health conditions in COPD have provided valuable insights into their direct associations, a more integrative approach may offer additional mechanistic understanding. This study aimed to clarify potential mediators in multiple brain regions between airflow obstruction and depressive tendencies in patients with COPD

Clonal dynamics on the road to hematological malignancy (MBL, MGUS, CH).

Monoclonal gammopathy of undetermined significance (MGUS), monoclonal B-cell lymphocytosis (MBL), and clonal hematopoiesis (CH) of indeterminate potential represent highly prevalent, age-associated precursor states characterized by detectable serological, cellular, or genetic alterations in otherwise asymptomatic individuals. The advent of high-sensitivity technologies, including mass spectrometry, multiparametric flow cytometry, and next-generation sequencing, has revealed that these conditions are far more widespread than previously appreciated, yet only a minority of affected individuals pr

The real-world economic impact of herpes zoster disease in patients with selected underlying conditions in Spain.

People with underlying diseases are at-increased-risk of suffering from herpes zoster (HZ). However, the economic impact of HZ on these populations is not well described. This study aimed to quantify the clinical and economic impact of HZ in patients with comorbidities (diabetes, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, heart disease, kidney disease, asthma) and immune disorders (inflammatory bowel disease, rheumatoid arthritis, systemic lupus erythematosus, multiple sclerosis, psoriasis, COVID-19 and psoriatic arthritis) in Spain. This is an observational, retrospective case-control study using

Dance for health impact in a rural Scottish island community: understanding stakeholder experiences.

Research and practice around dance for promoting health and well-being are rapidly expanding, especially dance for chronic neurological conditions. Yet, research has primarily focused on assessing individual-level therapeutic outcomes, providing limited insight into broader stakeholder voices and community-level health impacts. In response, a longitudinal qualitative interview study was conducted to explore stakeholder perspectives on the community impact of a collaborative, community-centred dance for multiple sclerosis (MS) initiative in a rural Scottish island community. Mechanistic Insights into the Role of Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning in the Diagnosis and Management of Multiple Sclerosis.

Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a chronic, immune-mediated demyelinating disease of the central nervous system whose heterogeneous clinical, radiological, and biological course has long resisted precise individual-level prediction. The recent convergence of large longitudinal datasets, advanced computational methods, and increasingly informative biomarkers has created conditions in which artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) can begin to address that problem substantively. This review surveys the current evidence for AI/ML applications across the MS care continuum, with particular

Serum neurofilament light chain in multiple sclerosis: from biological signal to clinically informed decision-making.

Serum neurofilament light chain (sNfL) is an analytically robust blood-based biomarker of recent neuroaxonal injury in multiple sclerosis (MS), supported by validated ultrasensitive immunoassays suitable for routine measurement. These assays now enable reliable measurement in routine care, and evidence links higher levels and rising trajectories to inflammatory activity, treatment response, and-at a population level-future tissue loss and disability risk. Clinical implementation is constrained by overinterpretation of single measurements: sNfL is not MS-specific, is strongly age-dependent, is

The redox paradox in neurological disorders: balancing cytoprotection, ferroptosis, and therapeutic targeting.

Neurological disorders, including ischaemic and haemorrhagic stroke, traumatic brain injury, and chronic neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, and multiple sclerosis, represent a major global health burden. Despite diverse etiologies, these conditions share common pathological mechanisms driven by oxidative stress, neuroinflammation, mitochondrial dysfunction, iron dysregulation, and secondary neuronal injury. The nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor 2 (Nrf2) signalling cascade and its downstream target heme oxygenase-1 (HO-1) are master regulators o

Systematic Identification of Mitochondrial Signatures in Alzheimer's Disease and Inflammatory Bowel Disease.

Mitochondrial dysfunction is increasingly recognized as a shared feature of Alzheimer's disease (AD) and inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), linked through overlapping pathways of hypoxia and immune dysregulation. Our study integrated transcriptomic and genetic analyses to uncover mitochondria-related mechanisms underlying these diseases. By analyzing multiple AD and IBD datasets through differential expression gene (DEG) analyses, biological pathway enrichment, and co-expression module construction, we identified hypoxia-induced mitochondrial dysfunction as a central risk factor for both condit
