L1-L5 anterior lumbar interbody fusion: anatomical and technical considerations: a narrative review.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: In the aging population, degenerative disc and facet joint disease is a common occurrence, and it frequently results in disability. Anterior lumbar interbody fusion (ALIF) surgeries offer effective treatments by stabilising the segment inducing the painful motion, providing indirect decompression of neural elements, restore lordosis and deformity correction. With direct visualization ALIF allows thorough discectomy and endplate preparation, with large surface area implants without the need for direct neural retraction which offers advantages over other techniques. The

Cerebellar dysfunction in glaucoma patients.

Glaucoma patients often have higher injurious fall rates compared to healthy older adults. However, little is known about the underlying neural mechanisms. Recent evidence shows cerebral changes beyond the visual pathway of glaucoma patients, yet it remains unclear whether the cerebellum, which plays an important role in balance and motor control, is involved in glaucoma. In this study, we sought to investigate cerebellar functional connectivity changes in glaucoma by comparing 32 glaucoma subjects and 10 age-matched healthy control subjects who underwent resting-state functional magnetic reso

Whole-brain functional neuroimaging correlates of cognitive flexibility impairments in people with mental disorders: A transdiagnostic coordinate-based meta-analysis.

INTRODUCTION: Set-shifting skills allow individuals to flexibly adapt their behavior against environmental feedback. Impairments of this cognitive control process represent the core features of heterogeneous mental disorders. However, it is unclear whether the neural mechanisms of set-shifting impairments are shared across different mental disorders. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We systematically screened the neuroimaging literature and conducted a coordinate-based meta-analysis. Of 1930 publications, 22 functional neuroimaging studies investigating neural response differences during the performanc

Neural correlates of rumination and social anxiety: Mediating role of vmPFC connectivity in resting-state fMRI.

Rumination is closely associated with social anxiety and is considered a key cognitive factor in its onset and persistence. Both processes engage brain functions related to self-referential cognition and emotional regulation; however, the neural pathways linking rumination and social anxiety remain incompletely understood. Using resting-state neuroimaging data from 470 participants, we conducted voxel-based functional connectivity analysis focusing on the ventromedial prefrontal cortex (vmPFC), a key region implicated in self-referential processing and affective regulation. Results showed that

The genetic architecture of fibromyalgia across 2.5 million individuals.

Fibromyalgia is a common and debilitating chronic pain syndrome of poorly understood etiology. Here, we conduct a multi-ancestry genome-wide association study meta-analysis across 2,563,755 individuals (54,629 cases and 2,509,126 controls) from 11 cohorts, identifying the first 26 risk loci for fibromyalgia. The strongest association was with a coding variant in HTT, the causal gene for Huntington's disease. Gene prioritization implicated the HTT regulator GPR52, as well as diverse genes with neural roles, including CAMKV, DCC, DRD2/NCAM1, MDGA2, and CELF4. Fibromyalgia heritability was exclus

Screening of orthopedic medicines identifies raloxifene hydrochloride as a novel ferroptosis inhibitor for spinal cord injury therapy.

Spinal cord injury (SCI) is a severe condition that can lead to irreversible central nervous system damage. Spinal cord injury patients frequently present with coexisting orthopedic conditions, and many of them also have underlying bone and joint diseases. Recent studies have identified ferroptosis as a significant contributor that exacerbates the progression of spinal cord injury. This study conducted a screening in common orthopedic medications, which includes anti-osteoporosis agents and calcium supplements, in order to identify potential ferroptosis inhibitors and investigate their therape

Neurobiological Underpinnings of Hyperarousal in Depression: A Comprehensive Review.

Patients with major depressive disorder (MDD) exhibit an abnormal physiological arousal pattern known as hyperarousal, which may contribute to their depressive symptoms. However, the neurobiological mechanisms linking this abnormal arousal to depressive symptoms are not yet fully understood. In this review, we summarize the physiological and neural features of arousal, and review the literature indicating abnormal arousal in depressed patients. Evidence suggests that a hyperarousal state in depression is characterized by abnormalities in sleep behavior, physiological (e.g., heart rate, skin co

Trauma-Based Sexually Dimorphic Changes in the Connectome and Its Association with Central Sensitization Syndromes-A Systematic Review.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Chronic pain syndromes pose a significant global health challenge to patients and physicians with a complex relationship of biological and psychosocial factors that are only partly understood. Emerging research suggests an association between prenatal and childhood adversity and the development of somatic syndromes, particularly in females. This study aims to explore the relationship between sexual dimorphic epigenetic changes in the connectome and prenatal and early life adversity (ELA). METHODS: A review of the existing literature was conducted, examining studies util

Revolutionizing spinal interventions: a systematic review of artificial intelligence technology applications in contemporary surgery.

Leveraging its ability to handle large and complex datasets, artificial intelligence can uncover subtle patterns and correlations that human observation may overlook. This is particularly valuable for understanding the intricate dynamics of spinal surgery and its multifaceted impacts on patient prognosis. This review aims to delineate the role of artificial intelligence in spinal surgery. A search of the PubMed database from 1992 to 2023 was conducted using relevant English publications related to the application of artificial intelligence in spinal surgery. The search strategy involved a comb

Sevoflurane-induced amnesia is associated with inhibition of hippocampal cell ensemble activity after learning.

General anesthesia could induce amnesia, however the mechanism remains unclear. We hypothesized that suppression of neuronal ensemble activity in the hippocampus by anesthesia during the post-learning period causes retrograde amnesia. To test this hypothesis, two experiments were conducted with sevoflurane anesthesia (2.5%, 30 min): a hippocampus-dependent memory task, the context pre-exposure facilitation effect (CPFE) procedure to measure memory function and in vivo calcium imaging to observe neural activity in hippocampal CA1 during context exploration and sevoflurane/home cage session. Predicting Keratoconus Progression and Need for Corneal Crosslinking Using Deep Learning.

We aimed to predict keratoconus progression and the need for corneal crosslinking (CXL) using deep learning (DL). Two hundred and seventy-four corneal tomography images taken by Pentacam HR® (Oculus, Wetzlar, Germany) of 158 keratoconus patients were examined. All patients were examined two times or more, and divided into two groups; the progression group and the non-progression group. An axial map of the frontal corneal plane, a pachymetry map, and a combination of these two maps at the initial examination were assessed according to the patients' age. Evaluation of UBE3A antibodies in mice and human cerebral organoids.

UBE3A is an E3 ubiquitin ligase encoded by the neurally imprinted UBE3A gene. The abundance and subcellular distribution of UBE3A has been the topic of many previous studies as its dosage and localization has been linked to neurodevelopmental disorders including Autism, Dup15q syndrome, and Angelman syndrome. While commercially available antibodies have been widely employed to determine UBE3A localization, an extensive analysis and comparison of the performance of different UBE3A antibodies has not been conducted. Here we evaluated the specificities of seven commercial UBE3A antibodies in two

A systematic review of neurogenesis in animal models of early brain damage: Implications for cerebral palsy.

Brain damage during early life is the main factor in the development of cerebral palsy (CP), which is one of the leading neurodevelopmental disorders in childhood. Few studies, however, have focused on the mechanisms of cell proliferation, migration, and differentiation in the brain of individuals with CP. We thus conducted a systematic review of preclinical evidence of structural neurogenesis in early brain damage and the underlying mechanisms involved in the pathogenesis of CP. Studies were obtained from Embase, Pubmed, Scopus, and Web of Science. After screening 2329 studies, 29 studies, co

Young blood products: emerging treatment for Alzheimer's disease?

Alzheimer's disease is the most common neurodegenerative disorder and no disease-modifying treatment is currently available. Research has shown that while brain neurogenesis continues in adult life, it declines with age. Using parabiosis, plasma transfusions and direct administration of neural growth factors, animal studies have demonstrated the positive impact of exposure to young blood products on neurogenesis and synaptic plasticity in an aging brain. The hippocampus and the sub-ventricular zones were identified as the main regions affected. Promising findings have prompted researchers to e

Rare deleterious variants in GRHL3 are associated with human spina bifida.

Neural tube defects, including spina bifida, are among the most common birth defects caused by failure of neural tube closure during development. They have a complex etiology involving largely undetermined environmental and genetic factors. Previous studies in mouse models have implicated the transcription factor Grhl3 as an important factor in the pathogenesis of spina bifida. In the present study, we conducted a resequencing analysis of GRHL3 in a cohort of 233 familial and sporadic cases of spina bifida. We identified two novel truncating variants: one homozygous frameshift variant, p.Asp16

Unleashing creativity: The role of left temporoparietal regions in evaluating and inhibiting the generation of creative ideas.

Human creativity is thought to entail two processes. One is idea generation, whereby ideas emerge in an associative manner, and the other is idea evaluation, whereby generated ideas are evaluated and screened. Thus far, neuroimaging studies have identified several brain regions as being involved in creativity, yet only a handful of studies have examined the neural basis underlying these two processes. We found that an individual with left temporoparietal hemorrhage who had no previous experience as an artist developed remarkable artistic creativity, which diminished as the hemorrhage receded.

Stem cell-based therapy for Huntington's disease.

Huntington's disease (HD) is a late-onset neurodegenerative disease characterized by a progressive loss of medium spiny neurons in the basal ganglia. The development of stem cell-based therapies for HD aims to replace lost neurons and/or to prevent cell death. This review will discuss pre-clinical studies which have utilized stem or progenitor cells for transplantation therapy using HD animal models. In several studies, neural stem and progenitor cells used as allotransplants and xenografts have been shown to be capable of surviving transplantation and differentiating into mature GABAergic neu

Reduced deactivation in reward circuitry and midline structures during emotion processing in borderline personality disorder.

OBJECTIVES. Borderline personality disorder (BPD) is characterized by a pervasive affective dysregulation. While recent imaging studies demonstrated the neural correlates of abnormal emotion processing in BPD and recently one study reported alterations of the reward circuit in this patient group, the exact neural mechanisms underlying the impact of abnormal emotion on reward behavior remain unclear. METHODS. We therefore conducted an fMRI study in healthy controls and BPD patients to investigate the modulation of the anticipation of reward by simultaneously presented emotional pictures. RESULT

Common neural systems associated with the recognition of famous faces and names: an event-related fMRI study.

Person recognition can be accomplished through several modalities (face, name, voice). Lesion, neurophysiology and neuroimaging studies have been conducted in an attempt to determine the similarities and differences in the neural networks associated with person identity via different modality inputs. The current study used event-related functional-MRI in 17 healthy participants to directly compare activation in response to randomly presented famous and non-famous names and faces (25 stimuli in each of the four categories). Findings indicated distinct areas of activation that differed for faces
