To treat progressive posthemorrhagic hydrocephalus we used early external ventricular drainage (EVD) in 14 premature infants. We think it is important that the catheters in these critically ill infants be inserted in the neonatal intensive care unit, allowing us to keep the infants in an extremely stable environment. Only after prolonged external ventricular drainage (on average 38.4 days) is a ventriculoperitoneal shunt considered, preferably when the child has reached a body weight of 2000 g. Five studies were carried out in children younger than 4 years old attending regularly day care centres in order to determine the intestinal parasitization by Cryptosporidium and Giardia. The percent of children parasitized by Cryptosporidium was 10% (17 children out of 170 studied). We report the case of a 12-year-old child suffering from mild mental retardation, hypotonia, long hands with tapering fingers, microcephaly, truncal obesity, particular facial features. The association of these abnormalities has been known as Cohen Syndrome since 1973. Such a dysmorphic syndrome is usually inherited as an autosomal recessive trait whose gene has not been yet localized. We report four cases of necrotizing fasciitis that occurred following varicella in children ranging in age from 2 to 8 years. The only organism isolated from each of these patients was Streptococcus pyogenes or group A beta-hemolytic Streptococcus (GABHS). A prospective randomised trial of "planned" chronic injection sclerotherapy (at three weekly intervals) versus "demand" injection sclerotherapy (after variceal bleeds only) was performed in 40 patients who had endoscopically proven variceal bleeding, and who were either graded as modified Child's grade C or were more than 65 years of age. 45% of patients survived for one year and 37% for two years. We have surgically treated esophageal varices, particularly by left gastric vena caval shunt (LGCS) as the first choice in patients with good liver function (n = 40). Forty-seven patients with renal carcinoma were included in first line or rescue protocols of immunotherapy including IL2 alone or in association with LAK cells, INF alpha or TNF.
