What do women want to see in a personalized breast cancer risk report? A qualitative study of Asian women of two countries.

A breast cancer risk assessment tool for Asian populations, incorporating Polygenic Risk Score and Gail Model algorithm, has been established and validated. However, effective methods for delivering personalized risk information remain underexplored. This study aims to identify and develop effective methods for conveying breast cancer risk information to Asian women. Through ten focus group discussions with 32 women in Indonesia and Singapore, we explored preferences for the presentation of risk information. Participants favored comprehensive reports featuring actionable steps, simplified lang

Impact of urinary catheters including reusable catheters on quality of life and work productivity in persons with spinal cord lesion.

While preventing renal damage and symptomatic urinary tract infection are of paramount importance to persons with a spinal cord lesion (SCL), patient-reported outcomes (PROs) are receiving much more attention than ever before. We performed a cross-sectional internet survey of 282 adult members of SCL patient advocacy groups and investigated, for the first time, the impact of different types of urinary catheter, including a Japanese reusable silicone catheter and a reusable intermittent balloon catheter, on PROs of persons with SCL. Intermittent self-catheterization (ISC) did not surpass contin

Assessment of personality disorder in the ICD-11 diagnostic system: Polish validation of the Personality Inventory for ICD-11.

OBJECTIVES: This paper presents results of a study on the Polish adaptation of the Personality Inventory for ICD-11 (PiCD), which was developed to measure pathological traits under a new, dimensional model of personality disorders proposed in ICD-11. METHODS: The study involved a non-clinical sample of N = 597 adults (51.4% female; Mage = 30.24 years; SD = 12.07 years). For convergent and divergent validity, Personality Inventory for DSM-5 (PID-5) and Big Five Inventory-2 (BFI-2) were used. RESULTS: The results showed the Polish adaptation of the PiCD to be reliable and valid. Cronbach's alp

Neuroscience of consciousness in the locked-in syndrome: Prognostic and diagnostic review.

The neurological illness known as a locked-in syndrome is brought on by damage to the brainstem, usually as a consequence of a stroke. It is characterized by total paralysis with intact consciousness and cognitive capacity. The subjective experiences of people with locked-in syndrome are poorly understood. Presently, there is no systematic evaluation developed to describe them. The most compelling resources come from individuals' own words; however, only a small fraction of these accounts have been explored. When it comes to bioethics, locked-in syndrome protocols are almost completely absent.

Positron Emission Tomography (PET) and Neuroimaging in the Personalized Approach to Neurodegenerative Causes of Dementia.

Generally, dementia should be considered an acquired syndrome, with multiple possible causes, rather than a specific disease in itself. The leading causes of dementia are neurodegenerative and non-neurodegenerative alterations. Nevertheless, the neurodegenerative group of diseases that lead to cognitive impairment and dementia includes multiple possibilities or mixed pathologies with personalized treatment management for each cause, even if Alzheimer's disease is the most common pathology. Therefore, an accurate differential diagnosis is mandatory in order to select the most appropriate therap

Camus's L'étranger and the first description of a man with Asperger's syndrome.

The continued discussion about the meaning of Camus's famous novel, L'étranger, provoked a re-reading, and this, in turn, led to its clinical analysis and further investigation. The book rests entirely on the thoughts, words and actions of its central character, Meursault, and these were found to show impairment of social relationships, communication and interaction, with other traits diagnostic of the Asperger's subgroup of the autism spectrum disorder. It was then found that Camus had based Meursault on his close friend Galindo, and a search was therefore made for evidence of Galindo's chara

Mortality and risk of dementia in normal-pressure hydrocephalus: A population study.

INTRODUCTION: We examined mortality, dementia, and progression of hydrocephalic symptoms among untreated individuals with idiopathic normal-pressure hydrocephalus (iNPH) in a population-based sample. METHODS: A total of 1235 persons were examined between 1986 and 2012. Shunted individuals were excluded. We examined 53 persons with hydrocephalic ventricular enlargement (probable iNPH: n = 24, asymptomatic or possible iNPH: n = 29). Comparisons were made with individuals without hydrocephalic ventricular enlargement. RESULTS: The 5-year mortality was 87.5% among those with probable iNPH. The h

Progress in the experimental therapy of severe arenaviral infections.

A number of viruses in the family Arenaviridae cause severe illness in humans. Lassa virus in West Africa and a number of agents in South America produce hemorrhagic fever in persons exposed to aerosolized excretions of the pathogens' rodent hosts. Because arenaviruses are not transmitted by arthropods, and person-to-person spread is rare, human infections occur singly and sporadically, and are usually not diagnosed until the patient is severely ill. Because the arenaviruses are naturally transmitted by the airborne route, they also pose a potential threat as aerosolized bioterror weapons. The

Association of community antibiotic consumption with clinically active trachoma in rural Ethiopia.

Community antibiotic utilization and its relationship with trachoma has been poorly characterized in areas with endemic trachoma. A survey of all drug-dispensing facilities in an area of rural Ethiopia was conducted. Antibiotic use was calculated using both retrospective and prospective methodology, and expressed as defined daily doses (DDDs). Overall antibiotic consumption estimates ranged from 2.91 to 3.07 DDDs per 1000 person days. Macrolide antibiotics accounted for 0.01 to 0.02 DDDs per 1000 person days. Each additional DDD of antibiotic use per 1000 person days was associated with a 15.0

Body integrity identity disorder (BIID)--is the amputation of healthy limbs ethically justified?

The term body integrity identity disorder (BIID) describes the extremely rare phenomenon of persons who desire the amputation of one or more healthy limbs or who desire a paralysis. Some of these persons mutilate themselves; others ask surgeons for an amputation or for the transection of their spinal cord. Psychologists and physicians explain this phenomenon in quite different ways; but a successful psychotherapeutic or pharmaceutical therapy is not known. Lobbies of persons suffering from BIID explain the desire for amputation in analogy to the desire of transsexuals for surgical sex reassign

The experience of caring for a person with a mental illness: a grounded theory study.

A substantive theory that explained the experience of caring for a person with a mental illness was developed using grounded theory methodology. When participants began caring, they were overwhelmed by the role and consumed by what was happening to the ill family member, to themselves, and to their family. This state was conceptualized as a social psychological problem called being consumed. In managing the experience of being consumed, all carers engaged in a social psychological process, call seeking balance. During this process, carers moved to a state where their commitment to the ill fami

What motivates interest in attending a familial cancer genetics clinic?

The motivation of people who seek advice about a family history of cancer was explored in a cross sectional study of new cancer referrals to five regional cancer genetics centres in England: the PACT (patient and clinical team) psychosocial study. One hundred sixty-two people took part. Measures were source of referral, estimated and perceived cancer risk, level of cancer worry, and personal and family-centred reasons for wanting to be seen in clinic. General practitioners referred more people than hospital doctors, and referred a larger proportion of people at low genetic risk of developing c

Affect of serum leptin on nutritional status in renal disease.

Protein-energy malnutrition is a major comorbid condition in persons with renal disease. A variety of interventions have been implemented to supplement protein and energy intake in malnourished patients with renal disease, but the prevalence of protein-energy malnutrition remains high. Leptin, a hormone secreted by adipose tissue, decreases food intake via neuroendocrine systems in the hypothalamus in persons with normal renal function. Serum leptin levels are elevated in patients with chronic renal insufficiency and end-stage renal disease, and experimental evidence suggests a possible role f

A story of Pick's disease: a rare form of dementia.

Pick's disease is a progressive illness that affects brain function, eventually causing loss of verbal skills and problem-solving abilities. Pick's disease accounts for 5% of all dementias. The most common symptoms involve personality, behavior, and language changes. Diagnosis can be difficult; a differential diagnosis often requires several years. Frequently, the disorder is initially diagnosed as stress, depression, or Alzheimer's disease. A magnetic resonance imaging scan will show atrophied portions of the frontal and temporal lobes. One of the most difficult aspects of care for someone wi

[Individual protection against insect vectors].

Many diseases for which no vaccine is available are transmitted by insect and arthropod vectors, the main exceptions being yellow fever and Japanese encephalitis B. Treatment is less and less effective due to the development of chemoresistance to therapeutic and prophylactic drugs as is well-illustrated by malaria. One of the best methods of preventing these diseases is personal protection against insect bites. Personal protection measures can be divided into three categories which can be used separately or in combination : application of repellents to the skin, wearing clothes impregnated wit

The changing face of tuberculosis.

Tuberculosis (TB) remains an important public health problem worldwide, resulting in a estimated 8 to 10 million new cases and 2 to 3 million deaths each year. Between 1953 and 1985, the number of TB cases in the US declined by an average of 6% per year. However, since 1985, TB has been increasing in the US. Approximately 64,000 additional cases of the disease have been reported beyond the number expected had the rate of decline observed from 1980 to 1984 continued from 1985 through 1993. Increases in the number of TB cases have been significant in racial and ethnic minorities, in persons born

Disability in poliomyelitis sequelae.

Patients who have been affected by poliomyelitis may develop new symptoms such as muscle weakness, muscle atrophy, muscle or joint pain, and unexplained fatigue several decades after the onset of their poliomyelitis (post-polio syndrome [PPS]). We report on the results of our study of 59 patients with poliomyelitis using a number of instruments for disability assessment, including a 4- to 5-year follow-up. The main impact of disability for most patients is in mobility-related activities. Dependence in personal activities of daily living is fairly rare, whereas dependence and difficulties in in
